Anybody have a phobia?

Mine is fairly lame. I'm terrified of haunted houses. The things that small children are meant to find mildly scary. They are created to incite fear but not in a grown man. I know the story behind it and I still think it sounds strange. All I know is that I'm fine when I'm outside but get me inside and I freak out. Like panic-attacks and stuff.

I have a few fears like spiders and wasps and such. Those are just your standard fears though. Nothing over-the-top crazy loon scared.

What do people think defines a phobia over a fear, too? That's an interesting thing.

I think of a phobia as an uncontrollable, almost intoxicating fear. Like, I actually can't think inside those places. I just know I have to get out. On teh other hand I think a standard fear is controllable. Get out of it's immediate vecinity and you're fine. Just the thought of those houses sets me on edge.

Anybody have any thoughts?

Hmmm well I wouldn't call this a phobia but it's started recently and I've noticed. when I'm in big crowds I feel like people are staring at me (Even though I know they're not) It's never happened before, but it's begun to get worse lately though. I also get the feeling of needing to rush where ever it is I'm going or hurry and finish what I'm doing. I catch myself super power walking and I'm like "uh I have an hour before class why am I running?"

I have a few. First of all I am scared of thunder and lightning. I can look at a picture of lightning no problem, but I cannot stand it when there is a storm. I literally put headphones on and hide. No joke.

The other is, and get ready, cows. Yes, cows. I cannot stand them. They freak me out to no end.

My obvious one would be standing up and talking in public, i freeze up and my mouth stops working, not so good when i have to do speeches

Although i have a worse one that i've had since i was little..... balloons. They terrify me for some unexplicible reason. i have to leave the room if somebody has one. Its not the bang they make its just balloons in general

Looks like you and the Nostalgia Critic share a common fear.

As for myself? Needles. Mainly just the ones that you have to get injections from. I can be around sewing needles and the like, but when it comes to hypodermic ones, keep those far, far, FAAAAR away from me.

I wouldn't say that having a gun pointed at you invokes fear "universally" ... but I get your drift.

I might have a mild phobia of needles. Hypodermic ones, of course. I'm fine if I'm giving an IV or something, but if I'm not the one doing it, I can't watch the needle go into the skin. Like, I can't watch somebody on TV get a shot. If somebody is getting cut open with a scalpel, or if they're all mangled or something, I have no problem -- but break out a little needle, and I turn my head.

Other than that, I'm not too comfortable with heights or spiders. Basically, I just don't like spiders crawling on me (I've been bitten once by a Brown Recluse and twice by Black Widows). And I'm alright with flying, even if I have my legs hanging out a helicopter door, or climbing up buildings and such ... but if I'm on a beam or something at the top of a high building, I'm not one of those guys you see walking around, jumping from beam to beam. I would be the guy on my hands and knees scooting along.

My main phobia is being enclosed, and once I'm in that position I start to freak, and I d**n well will escape I'm not talking about being in an elevator, it's not that bad, but being wrapped up almost completely.

I also have a fear of heights, and my senses seem to go a bit dull in a matter of seconds when I think about how high I am. Which isn't comfortable for me when my brain is racing for a thousand solution's to escape the scenario.

Another phobia of mine is seeing, or being near sharks. I have no problem watching them on the television, but that's because i know it's not looking for my a** to chew on. When I'm in the ocean through it's a completely different story, and I never really enjoy it because I'm always looking around to make sure one isn't lurking around.

Haha, that reminds me of something funny. Apparently one of my friends likes to do sketchy stuff, and one of the stories is how she gets questionable chinese food from our asian side of town and then eats it with her friends in abandoned houses. Women are wierd.

I dont really have phobias of anything too bad, but I do get apprehensive when driving next to semis (several times I've almost been run off the road by them, shits scary) or with flying. Idk about the flying thing, I've flown all the time but I dislike it everytime lol, I dont ever sleep on planes either

No I'm not a troll. And I know what you mean by the perfect set up. But I really do think its a silly phobia to have.

My main ones are claustrophobia (small spaces) and emetophobia (fear of vomiting). There's others, but I don't feel like they're a phobia but just a small fear. Like spiders, failure, and being lonely/without someone for long periods of time.

When I'm in a small space, such as an elevator, I'll break out in a cold sweat and I'll look around for a way out or an air vent or something in case it breaks down. I've panicked because of it only once. We went on a class trip to St Pauls Cathedral, and went up to the top. It was amazing up there, but the stairs and hallways to get up there were tiny. On the way back down, me and my friend who also has claustrophobia were right at the back of the line, and everyone was going down the stairs so slowly. These stairwells were so small, the walls were almost shoulder width and the ceiling felt like it was brushing my hair in some places. I couldn't go back up or down the stairs and just felt trapped. x.x

As for the fear of vomiting, we think it comes from when my brother puked on me when we were younger. I didn't sleep that night and froze on the sofa. We also got a vomiting bug a few times when we were kids; I'd had it twice and he'd had it three times. And he'd usually get it first and I'd catch it. Now, just seeing vomit, people making a gagging motion, etc starts my gag reflex, and I'm frightened of being sick. I guess I'm also frightened of being weakened by it. x.x

I used to be like that when I was younger. I remember attempting to make a pact with 'god' to make it so I wouldn't be sick whilst on holiday. Only problem is that I had food poisoning. Totally chose a shite time to put my trust in higher beings.

I'd just like to say that I don't like being lost, either. If I suddenly realise I'm on the wrong train I panic quite a lot. Or say I'm walking in an area of town I don't know. I do find it fun in teh countryside, though. Like, camping and or whatever. Especially if I have my mates there.

Haha, thankfully it's never gotten to that stage with me. I have a certain degree of patience, and I know I'll be okay and I won't have to be in it long. I've managed to keep my cool in a crowed lift with a screaming baby before, but I try and make sure I'm near the door. If I was ever stuck in a lift, then I might start with some fists. ^^;

Can't think of anything I have a fear of... well nothing like what was previously mention by the other users. Although I do have this *being sentimental phobia* I like to call it.

What it is pretty much is when people sit down or something and pour their hearts and soul out about all the things they feel sad about or think isn't right blah blah blah.... honestly people try and tell me why their sad and stuff, but I just turn around and say *Did I ask you to give me your life's story*, then they will call me a jerk, asshole, blah blah blah and walk away with me laughing...

Matter of fact it's anything that seems remotely sentimental that gets under my skin. I know most of you are probably thinking, (well maybe you got hurt as a child and it's causing you to be emotionally scar or some nonsense)... well that's not the case...

So yeah not much scares me really... when I find out what scares me, then I'll let you know

I actually don't fear a whole lot. But, there are two things that get under my skin - Tarantulas, and roaches. I can handle the former before the latter, although both count as some serious nightmare fuel. And while I'm not quite sure what it is about tarantulas that creep me out, they just do.

Roaches ... Might have bee the horror movie I watched as a kid. Bleh. *Shudders.*

Hmm I don't really have to many phobia's. The only one I can think of is spider's. I used to be terrified of them. I eventually got over that fear, and now I am the proud owner of a tarantula.

My fiance is terrified of snakes, which is kinda bad cause I have two red tailed boa's. I had three, but one had like a seizure or some shit, and died. I think she may have poisoned it or something out of hate.. hahaha. I am getting rid of them in the next few days cause they have been known to get out, and I honestly don't like the idea of giant boa's being out of cages around my child so bye bye.

I'm only afraid of one thing, and that's being buried alive. Something about it just freaks me the **** out. The odd thing though, is that being buried in sand, like up to my neck at the beach, doesn't bother me, but the idea of being completely submerged in dirt and mud and having to fight to climb out just seems horrible. Though, when I do get buried at the beach, I HATE the feeling of sand down my shorts.

I also can't watch a needle go into my veins. I have no problem giving blood or anything like that, but there's something about just watching the needle enter that makes me skittish.

And like Rocky, I used to be very nervous when passing 18 wheelers on the highways. Nowadays, it doesn't really bother me though, but when I first started doing the drive to school, it was pretty bad.

Woah, that's pretty epic. The nearest I've come is being able to go in Hex in Alton Towers. Even then, for the story at the start, I pretty much crapped myself. Stupid thing is that when I got inside the ride I was fine.

Friends can make it fun sometimes. Maybe it's because you can talk to them and take your mind off it. Yeah, exactly it's not being able to get home that's a tad worrying. It isn't as big a fear as the others of mine though.

I don't have very many fears, but I am afraid of spiders... Like, seriously afraid of them. At one point in time, during one summer, my room was full of them... I've never been so afraid of them until then.

And oddly enough, I became afraid of dragonflies at one point. One landed on my nose a few years back, scared the crap out of me, and since then I've been afraid of them, but I think I got over that fear.

I'm also afraid being on stage, and whatever. I suppose it's called stage fright, eh? It's just... Going up, and standing in front of a whole bunch of people, and having a whole bunch of eyes watching you, it just scares me. And... I'm also in a school band, and all, and one time, when we had a concert, I could swear I was so scared. I play clarinet, and all, and the clarinet was shaking so badly... xD That's never happened before though, when it came to a concert, which I found really odd...

And I'm afraid of needles too. They scare me so much. Seriously, even if I THINK about them, they scare me. It's just the thought of them piercing into your arm, or whatever, it just gives me shivers, and all...

Oh... And I'm also afraid of Clowns.. xD I think it's because of Kefka, though he's pretty awesome. xD

I am a very brave individual. I can count to ten while standing on my head, which becomes extremely painful when I'm wearing tap dancing shoes. That's how brave I am. But like every brave man, I'm brave enough to admit when things scare me.

The only thing that frightens me is the Dread Pirate Roberts. I've heard rumors that if he captures a crew, he leave no survivors. But then, if everybody he captures gets murdered, where do the rumors come from? I don't know the actual story behind the Dread Pirate Roberts, but I dread him so much that I avoid sailing entirely, which is ideal, since I don't have a boat.

I'm not sure if this is a phobia. Phobias are more of an abnormal, obsessive, homoerotic, irrational fear of something. My fear is just kind of retarded, especially since I just made it up.

I fear spiders, but to be honest I'm not as bad as I used to be. A few years ago I was so bad with spiders, if there was a picture of one in a book, I would have to turn the page by the corner so my hand wouldn't tough the picture. I still can't watch anything on t.v with spiders in, but I have started getting up courage to squash the one I find in my home, only the small ones though.
I also have a weird issue with feet, I can't the sight if them, can't bare the thought of touching them, my kids feet I'm all right with, but not my other half. Also can't the thought of anyone touching mine except me, which is why I will NEVER! go for a pedicure.

I do have a wierd thing with touching certain things, but I think thats a slight case of OCD than a phobia, such as bin, I hate to make skin contact to them if I do, even if it's a tiny touch on the back of the hand, I freak out and have to wash my hands, I can't ignore it cos I can feel it, I can feel where the touch happend. Yes I know. I'm weird.

I also fear getthing old. Just because I don't know whats going to happen to me. I might age gracefully and be a happy healthy old woman, but then I could end as one who can't take care of herself. I don't want to end up as a old woman whos losing her mind, can't dress herself properly, wets herself because she can't make it too the toilet on time or needs the assistence to do so. So I guess what I'm really scared of is losing my independence.
