Not necessarily your personal favorite that nobody else has ever heard of, but a band that would stand a legit shot at being voted the best ever. And please let me know who else deserves to be nominated.
AC/DC
Aerosmith
The Beatles
The Rolling Stones
U2
Metallica
REM
Depeche Mode
The Four Seasons
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin

There could potentially be millions of proper bands bands out there and everyone has different opinions of them. You can't really only give us eleven option unless you'd like us to pick the best out of those, really. =[
Out of the above, I'd go with Metallica. Maybe Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Maybe you could add Bon Jovi?
I have many favourites, but I think they're on a league of their own.![]()
Muse and James should be on that list ]:
James are shockingly underated though, people always say who's he?! It's a THEM!! They can sell out concerts in seconds, but you're either and avid fan or you just have never heard of them, they never ever publicise ever, it's all just word of mouth really, that IMO makes them one of the greatest and most underated bands ever ]:
Muse are just....awesome and could defo have a shot at claiming that titlexD
From the list, I'd go for U2 /fangirl
Hm. Best Band Ever could be anyone, really. It's all based on popularity, favorites and who likes who better. So regardless of how you want the topic done, it doesn't work that way.
To me, it would either be Dragonforce, Rhapsody, or Austrian Death Machine. Which aren't even up there.
I would say Pink Floyd. They are one of the most influencial bands of all time.
By the way, where is Black Sabbath? They practically invented heavy metal! Without Sabbath, the landscape of rock/metal music would look very different.
The best band ever would be the band that is the polar opposite of The Jonas Brothers (oh yeah! I'm hopping on the Jonas Brothers Hate Train!)
From the list, I would be torn between picking The Rolling Stones, since they've been around forever and have influenced a lot of other bands, and U2. I'm like Lily when it comes to U2, and I pretty much enjoy all of thier songs.
Click at your own risk.:
It all depends on your standpoint. If you're a fan of metal, then you have to go with Zeppelin, and then Sabbath. And at the same time, they gave way to Maiden, and they were more or less out of the mainstream when Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains came around. It's all relative.
If you like regular rock and pop, you've gotta go with the Beatles.
Psychedellic stuff would be Floyd.
I don't really look at it in terms of what band is the best, but what some of the greatest albums are. Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon might just be the greatest album I have ever listened to. It really just encompasses life, and then some. There's also Back in Black by AC/DC, which is just an amazing, in your face heavy rock album.
I do have to give props to U2, mostly because they've been able to span at least 3 decades, still making pretty damn good music. Nothing from them beats The Joshua Tree though.
All time best band though, I would give that credit to The Beatles. They started it all and were really THE biggest act on earth. Their music is still awesome even today, and it's something that both my parents and I can even agree on. That in itself is pretty amazing, and speaks volumes about the music. They may not have been the most technically proficient band out there, but they weren't afraid to change their sound just for the sake of doing something different.
SOLDIERcHoSeNCrao Porr Cock8- Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers
Out of those on the list I would say U2 or Pink Floyd (voted for both), no particular reason it's just that of all of those bands you listed I listen these two the most.
As for my favorites, I highly doubt they're in the same league as the bands you listed and I highly doubt that anyone (except their fans of course) would give them credit for the best band ever.
Sig and Avy made by Unknown Entity
As for mua, none of the above. Why? because I really never listened to to much of anything up there. I could say that I like a little from the ones you listed. Definitely not enough to call my favorite band ever. Maybe the title could be favorite old skool band or something? not old skool old skool but you know.....Everyones favorite doesn't range from only the ones you listed. Out of the group I say The Beatles or Depeche Mode, still haven't listened to too much of them thoughJust a few songs.
I did become a fan of Rage Against the Machine for a while after I started listening to it while playing Grand Theft AutoI would scroll the stations until I found it. Oh and also Video Killed The Radio Star haha.

You guys kill me. The opening sentence of the topic says "not necessarily your personal favorite" and I have 10 comments telling me how none of these bands are your personal favorite. Yeah I got that. They're not mine either, except maybe Depeche.
I totally get that a personal pick would be relative to your own tastes, but even though you like Billy Bob's Country Jamboree better than Van Halen, there couldn't possibly be a debate that Van Halen is the bigger band. So these are, whether you like them or not, a collection of the biggest bands ever. I saw a mention of Black Sabath, and that's a good one that might should be there. And probably Van Halen too.
What I'm asking really is to consider who qualifies as the absolute best overall band ever. And to do that you have to consider a number of factors not to exclude
Longevity
Popularity
Number of Hits
Ability to Sell Out
Technical Ability
When you consider who is the best when you compile those catagories, the list starts to really narrow down. No offense to the Alternative people out there, of which I was one, but Pearl Jam won't be talked about in 20 years, but the Beatles still will be. Green Day has been a popular band that's been around for awhile now, but there's not much doubt that they're less talented musically than a band like Pink Floyd who can produce very complex arrangements.
So in summation, my personal favorite band is Toad the Wet Sprocket. But I wouldn't pretend they're universally considered to be the best. I'd consider the real contenders to be among the U2's or Aerosmith's of the world. Bands that have a fairly universal appeal, who have been around for a long time, have a long string of hits, are very talented, and can sell out arenas.

Alternative acts won't be talked about 20 years from now? Is that why The Ramones, The Clash, Nirvana are still talked about today? I would mention New Order too, although I dunno if they are necessarily a huge band. Or how about the Smashing Pumpkins? All of those bands are at least 20 years old, and are still big, or at least influential, today. All Alternative Rock acts.
Although I have to agree with Pete on The Beatles. Even though not everyone loves them, many, many people do. Many people were brought up on their stuff (I was.) Anyhoo...
Wuv, Yer Mom
Of all the bands listed any of them could easliy be voted as the best band ever. Simply because each has contributed something huge to their genre of music. Look at Zeppelin the re-defined metal music and are my personal favorite from the list. The Beatles I mean come one they are the shit their music was the inspiration for an entire generation...
But if I had to choose I would pick The Beatles, they were more mainstream and know thanks to The Beatles Rockband their music is being discovered by a whole new generation.
Locke has already stated that this is not about your favorite band but I just want to say that Zeppelin f*cking rulez my favorite band ever...So many amazing songs: tangerine(personal fav), Kashmir, Heartbreaker, Good time bad times, black, etc...Love em!!!
Without any hesitation i would say Led Zep. I cant name any other band where the number of songs I have active on a personal playlist numbers more than 50. They were diverse(d'yer maker case in point) but they completely revolutionised blues based music which includes todays pop, rock, metal only to name a few genres. My favourite song is Immigrant song as well as when the levee breaks and im only scratching the surface.
Apart from that list I can say i would be whistling a different tune if Dave Lee Roth had not left Van Halen in the 80's.
The Libertines. End of.
Dilly-dally, shilly-shally. Isn't it time you do the forgiving?
I may be in the minority, but I thought Van Halan was much better with Hagar. David was a goofy goofy man with big hair 80's vibe written all over him, and Hagar had some great tunes, like Right Now, which IMO is quite possibly the best song ever. But Roth fans feel free to shoot me down on that one.
By the way, I know the 4 Seasons aren't going to get much love, but I don't think you may realize how big they were. Working My Way Back to You, Will You Love Me Tomorrow, Sherry, Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man, Grease. You know you know those songs and they had a bunch more. They were considered the biggest band in the decade before the beatles.

... Um....
AC/DC i guess...
Dodie, I hate the Jonas Brothers too!
*Jumps on the train with Dodie ^^*
....
DIE JONAS BROTHERS!!!
JillXWesker & MeruXDart FTW!
For pure impact on the music industry and influence I've gotta give it to the rolling stones, they've been HUGE and sell out every venue they play ridiculously fast. Many of those bands on your list influenced each other in some way or another so they're almost all contenders but the stones are just something else....and I don't even like them.
@ OnOneRyder - great comments, and good opinion. That's what I'm talking about. Don't pick your favorite band necessarily. Pick the one you think is biggest across the board. Good stuff, and hard to argue. They were overshadowed a bit by the beatles, but they've lasted and been a huge draw for 4 decades.
