HELP!!! My computer hates my music!

I think this goes here... correct if wrong, and i'm really sorry if it don't...

Anyways, back to the point... MY COMPUTER HATES MY MUSIC!

It won't let me play ANYTHING! I can't hear anything coming out of the speakers. And yes, I did check to see if the mute thing was turned off... smart butt... lol...

So can anyone help me? Its been like this a while, and although its just my schools laptop, I'm worried cos i can't hear some 3 Doors Down video (I think its for their new song). Please?!

Is the problem only when you're playing music, or is it with all sounds whatsoever?

Windows, Macintosh, or Linux operating system?

I'll assume Windows real quick and throw this out for giggles. Open up the Run command (Windows Key + R) and type sndvol32.exe into the prompt. It will open your volume control panel, complete with extra settings aside from just a volume bar. Make sure your other forms of output aren't turned down. Everything to the right of the master should probably be maxed out, and then you can use master volume for control.

Most of the time, people will get the Wave volume turned off somehow and won't be able to hear sounds any more. It's a common error.

If everything is fine in there, check the speakers. You said it's a laptop, so if the speakers have blown out, or the sound chip (it likely has onboard sound, which is a chip on the motherboard) has burned out, you'll need replacement parts.

I tried that, but it come up with this message:

"Windows cannot find 'sndvol32.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

I don't think it's the chip or speakers, cos I haven't really used them - its only now i need them. Although, I think this all started when i plugged in some headphones - I remember a message saying something like 'headphone mode' or whatever, but headphones don't work either. OMG! Have i broke it?

...are you on Vista, or ANYTHING prior to that?

sndvol32.exe is what allows your computer to make sound. If it doesn't exist, you don't get sound. I'm not 100% sure that it's the same file on Vista, but it should be. I could check, but I'm lazy.

Anyway, if you're rightfully missing the file, you need to find your installation disc and get it from there. You cannot download the file from Windows online because it's a natural part of the operating system and should be present at all times.

I got the problem again on my laptop a few days ago. Kind of funny really... I was playing my music when I got up that morning - when I got home from college to play some music, it was busted again.

But this time... I fixed it. I did a system restore to a day ago. Turns out some new updates I was installing didn't install properly, and caused my speakers to screw up - which makes PERFECT sense. [/sarcasm]

So yeah. After the system restore, everything was ok again. Except then my Anti-Virus Software really got pissy with me, but I fixed that one after. ^^

Just in case it happens to anyone else. =D
