I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
So, I have noticed a trend going around the internet. A certain TV show has taken a lot of sites by storm, and that is fine. What disturbed me is that a large fanbase of it on the internet is guys 17 and over. I am curious, but not exactly eager to test if the reaction is as expected. Apparently, you watch for 5 seconds and hate it, and watch a whole episode and love it.
Now that all the sophisticated language is out of the way...
WHY IS MY LITTLE PONY: FRIENDSHIP IS MAGIC SO DANG POPULAR AMONG US GUYS?!?
I haven't watched it, and am afraid to. So, if there are any pony fans out there, please tell me your true opinions. I am not bashing the show, though nor am I endorsing it: I just trust people on TFF more than Youtube.
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
It's popular because it's 20% cooler than most of the other shows that are on right now. :3 It might also have something to do with the clever writing, interesting characters, and quality animation.
Also, don't be afraid to watch it for yourself! If you find that you like it, then you'll know first hand why so many others outside the targeted demographic like it. :)
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
I like it because I like the artwork, the writing, and the characters. Also, I like cute things and cartoons. I don't give a damn if it was made for little girls; if it entertains me, I'm going to watch it. If you (not you, but in general) don't like it, too fuckin' bad. Anyhoo...

Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
I've said this elsewhere, I think it's a serendipitous case of half good show half popular new meme material. The fact that Lauren Faust, the creator of the show actually interacted with 4Chan (which led others from the show to do the same) which is practically unheard of and a first in Television, helped it's popularity. I think the fact that it was My Little Pony, the epitome of girly girlishness, being so surprisingly good and enjoyable sparked more and more people to defend it.
The general consensus I've seen is the non-cynical innocence that's completely missing in today's TV shows. The reason there's so many older fans like me, is that it can be surprisingly therapeutic and refreshing at the end of a hectic day. I've seen stories from bronies who were on hard times, in therapy, depressed, suicidal who were greatly inspired by the show. Eurobeat Brony, who made some AWESOME remixes based off the show was one such person. Speaking of which, MLP has sparked one of the most creative fandoms I've EVER seen ESPECIALLY in such a short while.
Me? Well I'm not suicidal, but I sure haven't been so chipper in a long while. The characters are just so likable, it's beautifully animated, it's got great voice acting and well, the best fanbase I've ever come across.
Anyway, if you watch the show Lavos, I'd only say that the two part pilot isn't really indicative of the show as a whole. It's a rushed Sailor Moon-esque plot that was stripped down because of last minute circumstances and changes. Keep that in mind. It really starts picking up with the third episode and gets better and better after that. Hell, you're really not missing a lot by starting with the third episode (uness you HAVE to see the characters properly introduced)
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
I'm a girl, so I can't answer the question as to why GUYS like the show. Though I even watched it with my boyfriend sometimes. ^^"
But I wouldn't say I'm a girly-girly-girl who loves to make herself up and likes to be beautiful. (That's probably why I don't like Rarity ^^" She's way too girly!)
I like the show because it doesn't seem to take itself serious. Really. If you watch a few episodes, you get the feeling that the show is a parody of itself. ^^" At least that's what I experienced.
Of course there are some episodes in which you just see some pure friendship stuff. But they're rare. There's so much humor in every single episode, and it's mostly because of Twilight Sparkle.
Oh and I disagree, Cain. The first two episodes were the best of all. (Haven't watched the last two yet, though.) They're about Twilight Sparkle and how she found out that friendship is important - and she began trusting the other ponies in this episode. And god damnit I loved her cynical comments everytime. Like when Pinkie Pie began singing her song... ("Tell me she's not!" XD)
Oh and I probably like the Magical Girl-ish aspects of the episodes. It wasn't just "uuuh, we're best friends <3", there was actually a PLOT. And there is one in some other episodes, as well. But other than that, it's more "uuuh, we're best friends"....... with the attitude of being a parody of itself. ^^"
Still, I can totally understand how someone wonders why some 16+-year-old guys (and also girls) watch the show. ^^" But if you give it a try, it might appeal to you :D
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
I think I'll explain why I came off as extremely irritated in my first post: Why does it matter? Why has it caused the OP to "lose all faith in internet humanity?" Why can't I just like something, and not have repercussions? It's just a cartoon. It's not like it's child pornography or videos of people being tortured to death. It's not hurting anyone, and it's not being forced on anyone. Yes, it goes against social norms, but at some point, you have to learn to just not care what other people think and just be yourself-have your own opinions or things that you like that no one else likes. Or many other people like, apparently, whatever. You have to learn to be open-minded.
If the OP had been worded in a more neutral fashion, I wouldn't have been annoyed at all. Maybe it was for comedic effect. It backfired on me. I get defensive, and my sense of humor leaves me. Anyhoo...

Episode 1 is fine, I just think Ep 2 feels very rushed (it was meant to play out over several episodes) Besides, didn't you say you haven't seen many episodes yet? Some of the latter episodes like Dog and Pony Show and Party of One are amazing

Oh BTW I think this sums things up quite well

Whoops, that was my fault. It kinda was for comedic effect, my bad ;! .
Well, I will say, that this thread did help me at least decide to watch a few. Cain's pic also helped me get up the 'courage' to watch, as I really did believe it was like the play sets. It is very enjoyable, as I watched the first 5 in one sitting. I will probably continue the whole first season tonight, and wait until the second season comes out too sometime in December.
Though why it is so enticing to people still remains a mystery, I will say that I am hooked now, and any other wary readers of this thread should definitely watch at least the first 3. It may be because of all the subtle hints and humor in the episode (climbing onto a soap box, was that really a coincidence?) or it could just be hypno-magic with all the bright colors.
If all else fails, looking for Derp Pony is always fun!

Anyway, thanks for giving it a fair shake and being so nice about it. I've seen so many people that just have this "**** PONIES!" attitude that either stems from hombophobic sexual insecurity or they associate fans with furries and think it's purely a sexual fetish.

That brings up an interesting point, Cain Highwind. My attitude about shows such as My Little Pony is that I do not find it appealing for my tastes. It is not for any reason you gave; however, it is more of what I simply enjoy to watch. Many "sexual fetish" types as dirty minded people would see it as, also is referred to many games in the video game industry when it is done more as a sense of humor.
For an example, take Pi and Tabby from the .hack//GU and //Link series. They are not intended as "girly-girly" nor "sexual fetish." It was designed with the intent of having a sense of humor because of what real female players would make their characters look like, as well the obvious sex appeal marketing type. My answer to the graphics appeal would be like the signature of Dodie16, watching colorful images that leave some people gazing, "Yeah, that's cool." I was a little like that with the openning theme to Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex.
I have never watched those ponies keeping in mind the appeal to people that makes it a little better than most shows right now on tv with the remake, or anything such as Strawberry Shortcake or Care Bears, is a type I simply do not find amusing. Anything gooing with pink and sky blue is the mosting flaming, and the most flaming there ever will be.
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
I am glad I made this thread now, even if the title is a little misleading. Had I not, I may never have watched it, whereas now I am completely absorbed into it. To the point of the profile pics being changed and actually considering myself a 'brony', though I am not that far yet.
I may be soon though
Side note: Now I am engrossed enough to have read "Cupcakes" and find it both horrifying in general and for the characters. Just... Jesus it is terrible and gruesome
Re: I have lost a lot of faith in internet mankind...
Never read that Cupcakes thing, but I hear it's pretty messed up, and given that Pinkie Pie is my favorite character, probably don't wanna read it, heh.
Glad you like it, sir. Sorry I overreacted before. I am a dick sometimes. I try not to be, but sometimes I forget not to be one.
Kyreaan: It's all good. Your loss. Anyhoo...

Kyreaan: I like how people try to get around certain protocols by using text tags that are bigger than the word. Nice try, Captain Telegraph. Good Mod skills you have there. This should've been a poll on which is the most disgustingly cute. There's a lot out there that is not everyone's cup of tea, so it's not going to be their loss. I will, however, say this about the animed pic that Cain Highwind used. Someone probably should've used that as their sig. Even Pink Floyd would have been impressed. What do you think, Spiritas?
Spiritas: XD

Well that's fine, because you're not demeaning people who are watching it. I'm simply talking about people who have flamed fans of the show.

Obligatory :D
I haven't read cupcakes either, but I've seen enough fanart to kind of figure out what's going on. *shudders*

I'm going to answer this question without beating around the bush like everybody who has posted in defense of the show.
There are now approximately seven billion people alive on earth today. Approximately ten percent of the global human population are homosexual. As everybody has probably calculated by this point, that means that there is approximately seven hundred million gay people worldwide.
Now to take your age group into consideration; males 17 and older. There are currently an approximated 615,117,902 males in the global population younger than 17. That means that 2,873,191,449 people in the male population are 17 and older. So out of that demographic, approximately ten percent, or 287,319,145 people, are gay.
There you go. Riddle solved. That's why so many guys like My Little Pony. You're welcome.

Point. Set. Match. I concur. That's a pretty good possibility for some of the fan base. Anyone care to recheck his math? It's close enough to me for his point. This reminds me of something I said earlier, but it was meant as the vB meaning.
