Bloetaria 1-1 is the first area after the tutorial stage. Once you beat the boss of that area (the Phalanx) you can level up by talking to her. She will grant you the option after speaking to her a couple times and give you the stones to co-op and stuff.

I live in California xD and I do have msn and yes you can go back to the nexus
there are 3 options.

1. run back to the archstone.
2. Use a shard of archstone if you have one.
3. use the Nextal Binding, which you have at the beginning of the game, but you give up all your souls when you use it.

You can level up with souls after you complete world 1-1 by talking to the Maiden in Black
