I went and got a pick yesterday. Took me awhile to adjust, but now I'm starting to find it easier. It certainly has a much clearer sound.

That's my bass up thar. Except it's a navy blue, but you've seen the photo. It's an Ashton AB1 -- basically a simple beginner bass, nothing fancy. I'm using my girlfriend's amp. It's a 40-watt Aston BA158; so pretty much the same deal as the bass. I don't intend to invest large sums of money until I can actually play haha.

She's shown me a little bit of slap bass, but that's a little bit beyond me at this stage. She was in a band, over two years ago now. Her family is quite musical, so it was pretty much expected, but she's taking less interest in it, which is why I'm able to borrow her amp.

Your bass looks sweet dude (thanks, Google)! How much did that set you back?

My favourite bass guitarist is Simon Gallup of The Cure. I love how so many of his bass lines are simple yet effective. Beauty in simplicity is what I love about bass, and I enjoy how high up in the mix bass is placed in The Cure. In so many bands (particularly in mainstream rock), bass is used as rythm for the other members, and actually takes effort for listeners to pick out behind a bleeding guitar. Of course, that's the primary function of bass, but I think Gallup and The Cure were/are fundamental in recognising that bass could be 'an instrument unto itself', rather than something hidden in the background -- always important, but just hidden.

I also like Entwistle, but my second choice would have to be John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame. He is such a master, and his musical endeavours reach far beyond the bass. My favourite Led Zeppelin song is arranged by Jones; No Quarter. I also had the pleasure of meeting John Paul Jones -- completely by chance -- on the day he came to my city to play with Them Crroked Vultures. It was only in passing, but I shook his hand and said hi.

Thirdly, I greatly admire Kim Deal of the Pixies.

Those three in combination really attracted me to the bass. I want to learn to play with a plectrum, in the style of Deal, but haven't yet picked one up. Really, I'm just getting a grasp of the basics; I have no reason to really push myself, and haven't had any solid time to dedicate to learning, with Uni going solid since the beginning of March.

Hah, if I ever get to that stage... so I'm not sure. Really, I'd just like to learn songs that are enjoyable. Challenging songs will come along with that, but I'm in it for a bit of fun, and regret, that I never learnt an instrument while at high school. So genres that I find enjoyable -- alternative rock and post-punk, primarily.

I've just always liked the sound of a bass guitar, and my girlfriend plays (causuallly now, but she was in a band when she was in high school). I've only been playing for a month or so really. I'm not very good, but finding it suprisingly easy to pick up -- mostly through repetition.
