    Heroes Kinda Sucks Doesn't It?

I keep a low number of shows that I watch and I rarely get in on the ground floor, because I wait for the show to develop, and more importantly, to know that's it's going to be finished. I had a bad experience with the Carnivale cancellation.

But Carnivale, although cancelled, was a well written show. The dialouge was good, the acting was great, the plot was very compelling, and you really just got drug into the whole thing.

Lost is very much like that. There aren't really any flaws, and most of the complaints come from people who sit up at night pretending they are the writers of the shows and are dissapointed when their own "great" ideas are utilized by the actual writers of the show. Other than that, the show is arguably one of the best in television history.

But Heroes, dispite a loud fanbase, just doesn't have any substance, and I think it's more than 50% drop in rating is starting to prove that. Like I said I haven't watched a signficant portion of the show, but I hadn't watched Lost or Carnivale at one point in time either, and from nearly the first moments I started, I was sucked into both of those.

I've given heroes a few hours now, and I have to be honest, I just don't get it. There's nothing in any of the episodes that I care about. I don't buy into any of the acting. The plot is barely aparent and feels as though they take the smallest idea they can come up with and stretch it out as long as they can. I simply feel there is just not a lot going on in this show, and in general I think a show would feel better if it were critisized for trying to do too much than it would be to have nothing going on at all.

Heroes just plain feels flat. It has a highly production quality than Smallville does, but neither show has anything important going on. It's the kind of show that makes you feel like a loser for sitting on your butt watching TV.

And I don't know how they correct something like that, but TV shows only last if you feel as though you accomplished something by watching it. Or when spend all day looking forward to the next episode.

Again I don't watch it Heroes on a regular basis. But I'd also dread watching it, and that can't be a good thing.

I never thought that Heroes was a bad show, more like it was lacking something. I don't know what it lacks but it didn't hook me in like other shows do. I found it appealing at first. A fresh idea for a T.V. series about Heroes that have "real" problems, I was drawn in like a moth because I love stuff like that.

I was watching it for a while and after a few episodes, it turned into this festering pile of god-knows what, I didn't really understand what was going on. It seemed to go off-track with petty things and soon turned into this out of control mess. I just lost interest. So yeah it sucks.

You summed it up nicely at least for me. Whenever I watch the show, which is rare, I just continually ask myself why I'm watching. That's not exactly the mark of a good show.

I'm a huge fan of Heroes. I've never missed an episode and I have all of their DVD sets so I can re-watch them in my free time. What got me into the series in the first place was the fact that regular people had powers of their own, each different than the other. Every time I sit down and watch each episode, I would always imagine how awesome my life would be like if I could manipulate gravitational forces or stop time.

Even though I'm obsessed with Heroes, I still have my problems with the show.

    - Too many plot elements rehashed.
    - New Characters will always end up dying or forgotten.
    - Epic battle scenes are almost never shown to the audience. Especially the fight at the final episode of season 3. What the hell kind of season finale was that? >>;
    - Main characters have the habit of making stupid decisions.
    - Most of the characters have not fully developed their powers to its full potential.
    - There are so many chances for the villain to be annihilated, but none of the heroes did anything.

    Etc, etc.

Your points about the series have truth in them. What is it does the show lack? I have to say new ideas in character development, characters, scenarios, conflicts, etc. With the way the rates are going now, this season might be the last.

I appreciate that you took the time to give the show a chance though, haha.

As with anything else in this theme of liking something vs not liking something, its all personal taste. If we all liked the same things, thought the same things, did the same things the world would be a really boring place.

If you don't like it, don't watch. I personally like Heroes, but find this current season (forget which one it is, maybe 5? The one with the carnival people) kind of dull. I just can't get into it. But, the other seasons were fantastic!

This is what I meant, I loved the idea of powers and normal people getting them, as well as having them myself. I've always want super speed and the Invisible Woman's powers. Like I said, I did watch it in the beginning and I was trying to make myself watch it but as Locke said, you can't be enjoying it if you're forcing yourself to sit and watch it.

@ Tiffany - You bring up a good point, and one that I both agree and disagree with. Obviously there is personal taste involved in anything capable of being liked or disliked, but personal taste alone is not the determining factor. I guess what that means is that just because you like something, doesn't make it good. How that is defined is always a matter of subjection and devoted fans will defend their devotion no matter how bad it actually is, but still, even though you may like a lump of poo on the ground, it's still a lump of poo. Not saying that Heroes is equal to poo, but it has not displayed the production quality that a show like Lost, or maybe Friends, or Seinfeld, or other top shows have had. And I don't know where it's shortcomings are. It may be in writing. It may be in casting. It may be that none of things have glued together to make an overall good impression, but either way the show is simply not of the calibre of a top level program, and that's got little to do with personal taste.

I hope that makes sense, and I hope you understand that I'm not simply bashing. I just wanted include that because some people don't understand that there is a difference between taste and quality when it comes to art.

I think it's alright. I do like the fact that season 5 revisited season 1 again and gave Hiro some balls. I wish he had his katana again.

I like the idea of having a group of specials working together to live their own lives (The Carnival).

xD Then there should be no reason for you to watch it in the first place, haha.

Heroes is a great show, but I believe that there are better shows as well.

My teacher doesn't like Heroes either. He prefers Lost.

    I love Seinfeld!

You don't have to worry. You gave the show a chance, but unfortunately you ended up not enjoying it. No harm in that.

    Not bashing. Its your opinion.

But again, art is subjective. What appeals to you doesn't mean it'll appeal to me. Regardless of 'quality', if you know what I mean? What is quality to you, isn't to me. I'm a huge LOST fan as well, I think its one of the most brilliant shows I've watched. In essence, it appeals to me and my tastes.

My BF doesn't overly care for it. He watched a few seasons, said "meh" and I'm back to watching it on my own. Him disliking the show versus me liking it has nothing to do with the difference between taste and quality when it comes to the 'art form' imo... just that what we like and dislike are different.

I've never understood people trying to argue other people into liking/disliking something. Or preaching/moaning when other people like something that is 'crap'. Everyone is all up in everyone else's business. Do your thing and whatever and whatever if other people like it or not.

@ Tiffany - I'm going to dissagree with you on one front, and I admit that I'm struggling to find an arguement to back up my point. I do agree that "enjoyment" and "likeability" are completely up to the individual. But "quality" is different. You can't make the case for instance, that Pee-Wee Herman is the best actor ever. You may really "like" Pee-Wee, but the overall "quality" of his productions was sub-par.

In other words, "quality" is a subjective term, but it has boundaries to go along with it. You can't just go around making the case that everything has high quality. You have to be able to back it up with some evidence, and my point is that it's much harder to make the case for Heroes being a good show than it is for others, and that's independant of whether you like it or not. Do you see what I mean? Like and Good are just differnt things when it comes to art. Liking it, doesn't mean it's good, and good doesn't mean you like it.

Nope, I don't see what you mean. I get that you believe it and I'm not trying to say that you shouldn't, but I personally don't think that something has to be "high quality" in order for people to enjoy it.

Further, I never said that everything in life is high quality. I dunno, I suppose I see it more like the street meat sausages that people can buy. They don't have the same "quality" as say, a gourmet 5 star dinner. One is processed crap, the other has been made by chefs who have had years of training in culinary arts. I have friends who will argue that they'd much prefer the 'street meat', as the gourmet food is too rich for their tummies and makes them feel sick.

Not sure if you have been missing what I was trying to say, just in that something doesn't have to be high quality in order for people to like it. So if Heroes doesn't meet the calibre of being high quality for you, so be it. There are others who will argue that it does... and then that brings me to a full circle moment (a la Oprah) to my first post: Differn't strokes for differn't folks.

Really? You say Heroes was something brought up from the smallest idea? Hello?? WELCOME TO ENTERTAINMENT! Lost isn't something stretched? "Hey hey guys, I got this great idea. Lots of people. are victims of a plane crash in the middle of the OCEAN. Then they all survive on an island..."

Dexter is one of the few that is original and well thought. Yes Heroes is the simple, "lets remake xmen into modern day."

Heroes is the show where if you begin to watch it in the middle of Season 3, you aren't going to get anything because EVERY EPISODE IS LINKED THE ONE BEFORE IT. It's not a show like The Office or Curb Your Enthusiasm where it's something new every time.

Heroes has a story, they stick to it, they add extra crap in it. Season 1 was amazing, best season in any show I have ever watched. Season 2 was alright but the writers strike made it bad and that is where it all began. Season 3 sucked, so much added twists, future this future that. They were doing the future thing waaay to much now. The simple, Hiro goes into future, sees what happens, comes back tried to fix it is fine. Season 3 was like, 6 people (exaggerating) go into future, see it, go back and forth blah blah blah Sylar Sylar Sylar. 2nd half of Season 3 aka Vol. 4 made the show better then the last 2 but it was still missing stuff, like it was being fake. Now with Season 5 just finishing it's Winter shows, season 5 the 2nd best season to be aired so far.

If anybody here starts watching Heroes anywhere except the very beginning, needs to stop watching it and start from the start because you wont understand anything.

@ Tiffany - Oh I'm not trying to talk anybody out of liking it. Enjoy away.

But really you don't see the difference between Like & Good? As in, you may really like a snickers bar, and hate fillet minion. But you would still understand that the fillet minion is more highly valued, right? Each steak would be individually critiqued by chefs and cooks would be proud of each piece they served. You see the fact that the steak is better on a production level right? And you see that's different than whether or not you like it right?

Yeah. I was disappointed with Heroes.

I watched the first season and enjoyed the premise/idea of the whole series... I just thought the acting was weak and the whole thing could have been done better.

As far as recent TV shows go, I enjoy the Sci-Fi aspects of it and the imagination not present in most programs these days.

So yeah... It's not that great but it could be worse. I can see why people like it though.

I bought the first season about a year ago and I LOVED IT. Shortly after, I bought the second season and still loved it. However, I am a bit biased because I love super heroes or people with abnormal construction.

All that aside, I do think that Heroes has some real potential to appeal to all but it doesn't jump on the chance. I still LOVE IT though.

I liked the first two seasons, but it definitely went downhill after the writers' strike ended.
