Yeah. Avast is where you wanna go. They keep their database updated constantly and have an internet 'firewall' so to speak when you browse the internet.

    Another alternative is AVG.

Also don't forget about Ad-Aware and Spyboy S&D.

Yea I have used AVG for quite a few years now and have never had a problem, there are constant updates on a weekly basis. Many times it has prevented viruses and sent them straight to the vault, the computer scan is great too.

I like Avira. It's free, and when it finds something, it lets you know with a weird Beep. so if you're not paying attention and you try to click an infected file. you'll definitely know it's infected.

If you want to clean up you're PC, i always do this:

    - Scan with AVG, full slow scan can take up to 3hrs but effective
    - Use Ad-Aware to do a scan again
    - Finally use spybot search and destroy

if there are any viruses after that then you might as well save what you can and wipe teh PC.

AVG Free (what i use) - AVG Free - Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for Windows XP and Vista

    Lavasoft Ad-Aware Free (what i use) - Ad-Aware 2008 - Reviews and free Ad-Aware 2008 downloads at Download.com

    Spybot Search and Destroy
(what i use in emergencies) - Spybot - Search & Destroy - Free software downloads and reviews - CNET Download.com

    Hope this helps.

F-secure has a free one online. No downloading or anything, just run it from their pages. And believe it or not I have found this to be the best programme around. It seems to find even the smallest hidden things in your comp. I had some spyware once and tried many programs, Norton etc, and that was the only one that worked. Highly recommended.
