HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

Normal setting where things look fine: http://i49.tinypic.com/2qxqlg3.jpg
Wonderful HDMI, but the game is squished: http://i48.tinypic.com/21xvsn.jpg

    This isn't mine, but it's Gemma's. Anyone have any tips/pointers on what's wrong? D:

To me, it looks like it's more squished in the non-HDMI image. Looks far more natural in the second image.

She says she'll try a few other games to see what they look like, but yes; that was my initial thought also. She'll check back in tomorrow.

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

    *coughs*

What I mean is that it looks squished from left to right - not top to bottom. The pictures aren't all that great, and you'd have to be here to see what I'm on about.

Imagine playing a widescreen film on 4:3 without the letterbox setting. Now imagine that look on a widescreen tv, with the whole picture taken up. People look anorexic. =(

I've done some searching up on the topic, and it seems I'm not the only one with problems. Solutions given on other forums are either A) Too spammed up for me to bother working out what is the correct solution, or B) Not the correct solution.

The idea that I've been playing my games on the wrong settings since I got my PS3 worries me... but then again, I don't think that's it, because then the Xbox has screwed settings too, and that's in a different room. x__x

I think the second one looks more normal than the first one. The first one looks streched, and the second looks not squished, I need to get my HD Tv .

Nah. Ignore the pictures. They're pretty crap. If I was able to take a screen shot, it would be more accurate.

    I know now it's definitely squished because the little circle on loading screens SHOULD be a circle, and not an oval. >>;

I'm talking about everything has been squished. Even the text on XMB looks 4:3.

EDIT: Also, last time I checked, you don't get disorientated playing video games. Unless you're a junkie.

Use VGA cables instead. They're nicer looking and more responsive to play on, and unless Gemma plays on a dinosaur tv I bet you can get some cables for cheap.

    Just trying to help

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

Okay, you know what? I think it's my imagination. Either the settings I had before, or the different text size threw me off.

I don't like how thin the people in Fallout 3 are though... it still doesn't look right... but seeing as Soul Calibur looks normal, I'll put it down to radiation making people look like sticky aliens.

I'll try some more games tomorrow. x__x

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

Third party cables definetely exist. <333 Connecting all my consoles to nice big monitors wherever possible.

My only advice would be to go through all the settings and see if there's a way to change resolution. I had to do that for my 360 when using a monitor though my PS3 seemed to get it right without any input on my part.

Not sure if it's been posted or not:

If your PS3 is off, and you hold down the power button to turn it on, and keep holding it down until it beeps about 5 seconds later, it will prompt you to autochange your resolution to the recommended setting. It will recognize if your TV is SD, 420p, 720p, or 1080p HD, etc.

    Hope you figure it out.

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

I've noticed a few people's PS3 not changing resolutions when TVs or cables are changed. You'll need to either do what Che said or change the settings manually, which i've never really done as i've only used mine on one TV haha.

VGA cables? I hope that was sarcasm Rocky haha, might aswell go all the way and buy a B&W TV

VGA cables are available. Most come with a seperate cable for audio but they're handy for bigger monitors without HDMI ports and can still output hi-def so long as the monitor can support it.

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

I don't recall saying they weren't available haha, no idea where you got that from.

The point was she already has a HDMI cable, meaning her TV is HD compatible, so whats the point in having those available and then using a VGA cable which isn't as good. Unless the TV is something lower than 1080dpi the difference is negligible, however 1080dpi HDMI cable is far superior, even with that taken into consideration there's still no point converting a digital signal to analogue and then back again, you're going to lose some quality no matter what. That and as you said, VGA requires an additional cable for audio, HDMI doesn't.

The argument is pointless anyway, since PS3's require a converter to use VGA and no-one wants to spend money where they don't have to XD.

I use a TOSlink for my vga cables so I get 5.1 digital dolby surround while it's hooked up to my mixamp. It's pretty sick sound, good picture, no tv delay lag and a great gaming experience!

TOScables are like $5 (3 euros? or so) btw, not an expensive commodity.

I spent $5 on my cable. Five Australian dollars. You could probably get one for like $2.50 in your currency. What I do love about the VGA cable is that with the split audio cables I can plug the PS3 directly to my Monitor and directly to my 7.1 sound system. As a similar sized monitor is cheaper than a TV I can get a huge, smooth 1080 picture, much cheaper. As for this converter, is it built into the cable? Because all I have is a $5 cable and it makes shit work wonderfully.

HDMI is great, but not every monitor supports it yet funnily enough, and I have had annoyances trying to get everything working when I connect both the PS3 and sound system to some TVs. (Though others are great, some seeming to auto-pickup devices and tune settings).

Re: HDMI on PS3 - Squished games?

Hey cheers guys for the help. The resolution stuff was the first thing I did when I plugged everything up. xD

I think it was just my imagination. The television I had before was a thirteen inch CRT, so it was difficult to work out what the difference would be (size wise - not graphics wise) on a 32" LCD. I just assumed that the picture was what it was supposed to look like when I was using the original cables, so I got a bit of a shock with the HDMI.

    I'd been playing my games with a funny resolution for about a month. ^^;;
