Backing up PS3 data to the new hard drive from the old hard drive?

I'm upgrading my PS3 from 40GB to 640GB. I have the new hard drive, and I know what I have to do to change the hard drive - it seems like a very simple task.

However. I don't have an external hard drive large enough to back up all of my data. So pretty much, I could sit here all day and just send all my saves to my 2GB memory stick. I don't want to do that.

I want to know if I would I encounter any problems if I bought an enclosure for the old hard drive, and restore my PS3 from that hard drive using the restore option? I have data on there which can't be copied (Dragon Age, Assassin's Creed II and Heavy Rain, which is a BUMMER) - obviously that won't go to the new hard drive, but would that stop anything else going/will I be prompted?

Finally, umm... do I need to ground myself? I know how to, just looking around my place, that seems kind of hard. I could use my old PC case, but how important is it for just swapping out the hard drive on the PS3? All the youtube and written guides I've seen don't mention it.

Not sure on how to do the mass memory swap, I think that turning your old hard drive into an external drive would suffice but the main reason I am coming into this thread is to tell you that it is extremely important that you ground yourself to something. Static buildup is what you are going to be fighting in this process and one small static shock could possibly wipe your old drive clean or put a big enough error into the system that you would basically have to format the drive (speaking from personal experience on this one with one of my old PCs).

Grounding yourself as you said will be easy but it is a necessity.

Haha, cool. I'll totally dig out my PC case before I do anything then.

So pretty much now, it's just the backing up issue - if it'll turn out to be an issue, that is.

Re: Backing up PS3 data to the new hard drive from the old hard drive?

Apologies for the double post (almost twelve hours after the above post, so I think I'm okay) but I don't need help any more. I just did the upgrade, and even though I spent most of the time bricking it, I now have so much moar breathing space on my PS3 console. Managed to do everything without many problems, so it was a success without my thought processes above. YAY.

Still curious if it'd work though, but I doubt it will. Posted the same thing on another forum, and most of them said it wouldn't work.
