The expression has to be modified when translated, which is a bitch without the entire context. Er, it gets better if you exclude the 'presque'. Depending on the sex of the person you might want to change 'beau' to 'belle' or 'jolie', and if it's for someone you know, you probably want to use 'toi' instead of 'vous'. And you could use 'si' instead of 'aussi' Er, and if you wish to make it grammatically correct you should write n'est pas.

Much clearer, eh?

n'est pas si jolie que toi/pas aussi belle que toi etc.

-Ich weiss nicht - I don't know
-Ich weiss noch nicht - I don't know yet
-Ein bisschen - a little (someone asks you if you speak German and you know only so much, just say this to clarify)
-Willst du einen Glasse Wein - Would you like a glass of wine (I made a lot of friends with this one down at the Schwimmbad XD)
-Schwansnase (sp?) - ****nose (sorry, funny curse word I picked up ^^)

>Kann ich noch fünfzehn Minuten haben? "Gebe" means the opposite, like "I give you 15 minutes"

I am better with French than Japanese, and would like to know if anyone has been two one/both of these countries, and whether or not they found it hard to communicate while they were there

I've been to France for numerous times. I learned French for about 5-6 years and I found it quite difficult to communicate. It's always advisable to have someone there who can show you around and help you with the language. And be prepared that the French people refuse to speak other languages even if they are able to.

I'm currently learning Japanese but still on a bloody noob level. My sensei told me that it is difficult to communicate in Japan and that English is less helpful than you may think. I wasn't there for myself though.

If you have any questions just ask, I'm a native speaker and can help you. For the umlauts - just look them up in an (extended) ASCII table and type Alt-xxx (xxx=decimal ASCII Code), like e.g. Alt-142 for 'Ä'.

Psh, my school is the only school in town...all we have is Spanish, and to think...if I hadn't moved, I'd be taking Japanese...

Anyways, two things that confuse me with Japanese is grammar and when to use what word, since many words mean the same thing...it's just confusing, I guess I'll learn by example for the two weeks while I'm in Japan...I'll be staying with host families.

I need a bit of help, would anyone who actually knows the language tell me how Japanese grammer is shaped? And if the noun and verbs change in any way in a situation, I'd appreciate help with that too.

For the people who need to learn Korean from way back in page 1 or 2...

Korean grammer is shaped completely different from english, so english will be of little use in that aspect. English does not have many sounds that Korean does either. In other words, screw english.

The phrase "An young ha seh yo" (Rough pronounciation) translated means "Hello", "Hi", etc in a formal manner. (yo at the end of a phrase shows respect, formalality, or in conversation with an elder)

Direct translations give us this: Hello (respectfully or to an elder)

That wasn't so hard, now was it? Now for sentences.

Om ma, on jeh bap mu guh yo?

You should be able to realize off the bat that it's to an elder. Loosely translated, it means "Mom, when are we eating?" (formal, etc)

Directly, it means "Mom, when food (we) eat?" (formal, etc)

Many times, the direct noun, in this case Mom, comes first. The first verb follows, sometimes showing time. The secondary noun follows, and the secondary verb comes after that.

Let's look at another sentence format.

Bab ga dehgeh mashise se ke yo. (Don't kill me; this is about the roughest pronounciation you'll ever see)

Loose translation- The food looks wonderful! (Formal, etc)
Direct- Food (does, is) very good seems. (formal, etc)

Again, the direct noun is first, then the first verb, but the secondary verb changes. Let's look at it from another viewpoint.

The direct noun usually goes first, then the first verb. Adjectives are inserted in between nouns and verbs. Things of the same class (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc) rarely touch.

So that's Korean 101. Please don't kill me for my numerous pronounciation errors and NEVER EVER use my pronounciations. You can add, edit, change, etc to this post to make it as accurate as possible.

I know a bit of German because I learned a fair amount in high school, I forget most of it though. It would be nice to learn more of it because it is a handly language to learn. I have always wanted to learn Japanese but there were no choices of languages to learn at school, only German. I'm not complaining though, Germany is a lovely place and the Geman's have a lovely language!

I have about a 4th year study proficiency in Japanese and a 3rd year in Spanish. I also can speak a good amount of french, spelling and grammar is what gets me. Writing it is always harder. That goes for any other language. And then I have basic conversation skills in American Sign Language.
