    Organ donor...Y/N?

This has probably been discussed before...anyhoo.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, because it's something I'm going to have to put on my license. I still can't decide.

Would you give your organs to people after you've died? It could save lives....or wouldn't you?

I wouldn't mind saving lives, but I'm creeped out in being frankensteined after I die and also that parts of my body would be living on in some complete stranger...

And yet, if someone I knew needed a kidney or a piece of liver or skin or something and we were compatible, something I don't need and I'm alive in this scenario, I'd give it to them in a heartbeat.

I'd love some opinions on the matter. I'll have to make a choice sometime or other >_<
I remember when you were happy with a RADISH.

I'd be more than happy to give up my body parts. Sure my liver might not be in too good nick, but everything else is. I figure, I'm not going to care when I'm dead, nor will I need the organs. So why not give them to that guy or girl who's short something. And in a way, a part of you would live in them.

I would if I could, anything to save someone's life that could be cut drastically short. The waiting list for organ transplants are long. Some so long that people die before they can get one. Livers, Hearts, Kidneys; they can help children too.

The problem for me is I can't. When I was younger, I was poisoned by someone and couldn't move for a few months. It screwed up my liver and some other organs too. The poison never disapated, but I can move and act normally again. So my blood is screwed up even though I can do things everyone else can. I, too, will probably need a transplant later on in my life.

This prevents me from helping others, and it pains me to see or hear about others that need organs.

But for you, I'd say yea. Once your dead, your body gets stuffed with sawdust. If an organ can be used to save someone, It might be worth saving them.

It would make me feel better if I could. I feel bad that I can't.

My eyes are shot with lousy vision, so no go there, lungs are shot from smoking (yeah, I know....), but since I'd like to be creamated, I might as well donate anything else that can be used before I'm fried.

Not only does it say "yes" on my license for being an organ donor but I also want to donate what's left of me for medical science. Because even if my organs can't be transplanted I think surgeons should be well trained. My body should be put to some use after I die, other than fertilizing a wood box six feet under the ground.

I think a long, healthy life is a right and not a privilige. Unfortunately, nature seems to disagree and gives people weaker organs or dysfunctional organs. That is why i believe that every dying human should consider donating organs. Sure people will be living on what your body organs, but rather give life than to be a selfish bastard who thinks that people will mess up your organs and all lame excuses to keep your organs. I mean eiher way, its giving them to unfortunate people (Not drunkies and smokers), getting them eaten by bugs after the termites get the job done on your coffin or finally burning them in the cremation process.

I for one am a donor...plus my blood is type O negative...so its all good.

Oh hell yeah. If I'm dead there's nothing I can do about it. A body is just a body nothing more. I figure when I'm gone there's nothing else I can do. By all means take all the eyes, kidneys, or skin you need. I'm long gone as is so what's the use in having it stay in a rotting corpse, right?

I am not sure, I used to think about it and say 'no way, why should I give away my body parts?' Then I realised that it could save many people's lives. I haven't discussed this with my parents or anything, maybe I should. My Dad and Brother are organ donors I think. I wouldn't want my organs going to waste when I die so why not? If I could save a person's life from my own parts, well then that would be a wonderful thing to know. Of course I'm not going to know after I'm dead but you get my point! Saving an innocent person's life who has been suffering for so long would be really lovely.

I think that being an organ donor is a great thing, and is luckily becomng more widely accepted. As said before, the line for organs is incredably long. However, I personally am quite dubious about becoming an organ donor. Physically I am probably a great candidate for it as I don't drink, smoke or do drugs, and so far have had nothing bad happen to me. However I am scared of surgery, and I can't help but think that with a donor card, medics would be less willing to rescuscetate you after an accident because of Joe who needs a new heart and happens to be A positive blood group. Paranoia, yes, however sometimes the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming.

Most of the people that I know have qualms over this issue. And while I've not amended my license, I also haven't made up my mind yet. Another one of those precious issues that I must devote more contemplation.

I'm not sure how I believe. I don't think that either of my religions (taoism and christianity) have any major issues with it.

Give me time, though. I just settled all of my political ideas. I am making headway. Besides I have time, or so I hope. lol.

Well, on the surface, I must admit, I see nothing wrong with being an organ donor. In fact, it seems to be quite the charitable thing to do.

See, life (and the prick that poisoned me) denied me a true opinion too.

But if I had a choice of receiving an organ, I'd turn it down.

The organ would probably not last very long (a few years) and someone else would probably need it more than me.

I've been to hospitals with children or young adults that are bed-ridden from accidents and diseases.
They have their whole life a head of them.

With the way I live my life and the problems I currently have, I probably won't live as long as they would with the organ.

Shit, guys, cool up on the short-posts, would'ya?! I'm getting like, a million inquiries about this thread via IM!

Anyways. Organ donor? Hell yeah, put me on the list!

I'm all up for having my body parts removed and given to people that need them. I'd hate to think of myself rotting dead in the ground with all of my organs that had been functional before just laying there.

Organs are valueable things, ESPECIALLY in this day and age where people are more likely to get seriously ill. I'd definately want to save somebodies' life and if it meant doing that, then yeah. I'm all for it.

Most definitely. Like Severeth, I'd rather not have my organs go to waste and rot while I'm lying six feet under the ground.

I think that donating an organ to someone is a good cause because some people do need them. My mom is having kidney problems lately, but since I'm not 18 and since you need a license I heard I can't donate a kidney to her, I gladly would give it to her. She says I'm young and I shouldn't, but I feel like I should. I don't want to lose her especially this young. And plus knowing that someone who is ill that needs something, makes me even want me to donate it more. But as of now, her problems with her kidneys are off and on. Wait, can you also donate you organs alive as well?

Apart from that though, I would gladly give an organ to anybody when I'm dead though. Definitely a charitable thing like Sinister had mentioned.

Well thanks for all the yes's here, since I am an organ recipient -- If you know me i have talked about it before, but 3 years ago yesterday I received a kidney and a pancreas from a donor.

When I lived in the US, I was a donor, but of course now I cannot be, and in Australia, organ donation is the very lowest in the civilized world. I wish more people would truly understand what it can do for someone-- if it was not for my donor, I would be dead right now, god's honest truth. So in this issue I think i have more perspective on it then the average person >

I spoke about it with my Mum last night and I still don't know what I want to do. I mean it's a good idea and all plus my organs are just going to go to waste anyway. Mum said it was totally up to me with what I decide. My Brother has it on his licence but my Sister in law said that they're not allowed to take his eyes or something. I don't really know why, I think it's because he has nice eyes I guess. I don't like the idea of my eye balls being ripped out of my head, even if I am dead! It's a very creepy thought indeed. Like I said though, the idea of saving someone's life, even after death is a nice thought. Helping someone have a second chance of life is a really lovely thought.

I'll decide sometime soon I'm sure. I heard somewhere that Australia has one of the lowest organ donations or something. That's a very sad thought, probably lots of people pass away. It's a very sad thought.

To me, the following disposal options seem good in order of most good/least resource drain/pollution to least good/worst resource cost/pollution. Note that not all the options are mutually exclusive and that the preferred objects tend to cost less:

    1) Donor - anything that can be used.
    2) Cadaver for medical training.
    3) Body world specimen for public education.
    4) Buried at a shallow depth naked under a tree as fertilizer.
    5) Put through a blender then spread in a garden as fertilizer.
    6) Dumped in LN2 and pulverized then dumped in a garden as fertilizer.
    7) Buried in a cemetery (no fancy box though they probably will insist on something) but where your minerals are not useful for anything.
    8) Incinerated.
    9) Preserved in LN2 as a corpsicle.
    10) Mummified and put on public display.

I would agree that the above options be used only in respect to ones will, or, if unavailable, the next of kins (except perhaps those who have such liberties restricted), but unless you plan on cryopreserving your cadaver it may as well be put to some further useage. Either way you won't know a thing.

yes, i think i will rather donate one or few of my organs in my body after i die rather than let my dead body decayed for long long time and it's useless... as long as there is no defect (i'm not sure lol) besides, i cannot use my body anymore when i die and nature speaking, you cannot able to bring my separated soul to my dead body back, right? I don't even want to be a zombie lol

ok I'm getting serious... i don't see anything bad about donating organs once you died. I don't know about you and yes, it's beneficial to other people's lives, especially when a doctor said he or she has a big, big chance to live... as long as there is a replacement than i have (if i were the one that is dying together with that other patient or so) so it's alright for me

    Hahahahahah. "Corpsicle."

Anyway. I'm up for donating my organs when I die. I mean, what the hell am I gonna do with 'em? Superstitions about "harvesting" are urban myths, but somebody might as well get some use. I would much rather my liver go to a child or young adult who was injured, or somebody with an illness since birth, than some 60-year-old who drank his liver to death, but I really don't have a say in that. I might as well donate, I mean I could either directly help save somebody's life when they get my organs, or indirectly help save a lot of lives when to-be doctors learn from my body. And if I can help with something -- say, maybe a cure for body hair -- I'm up for it.

I'd like to "donate an organ" while I'm alive too, but all the bodies I've tried to donate to have rejected it.

I don't know...the whole thought of being cut up seems gross and not very respective.

I know it can save lives, which is why I would want to give my organ, but it's still weird. But seeing as how I'd be dead, it wouldn't be too bad. But if I were alive, and someone needed an organ, I don't know whether I could or not, unless it were for someone I knew and loved.

I don't really like the idea. Because they are a part of me. But on the other hand it is to save someone elses life so in the end it is a good thing. I don't know many people who are Organ Donors and you always hear on the news about people in waiting lists for months at a time waiting for a donor. Which is pretty sad especially when they are in a critial state.

I guess I could possibly become a donor. But I wouldn't let them take my eyes. I just couldn't I find that too weird. Or possibly my heart either.

Of course I would give my organs. I'm dead (I'll feel no pain!) and I would possibly somenome else's life, so...Why not?
