What do you think of greatest hits collections? Are they necessary?

Meh, what a load of rubbish! Whats the point on buying them, if most of the songs on there aren't your favs? Its just a bad excuse to get money for all those crappy songs! AND most of the songs on them are pants - more like the hits that didn't make it!

What greatest hits collections do you have? name them all if possible.

Don't own any. Mum probably has some somewhere, but I've never really seen one.

What is your favorite greatest hits collection?

    Ha, no favi here!

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?

They can bang out as many singles and albums as they want, just no Greatest Hits Colloctions! Actually, 2 or 3, then if they are that deperate, bring out a greatest hits...

Do you recommend greatest hits collections for new fans?

Meh, if it gets them into their type of music, then yeah. But no. Yeah? NO!

Some people think that greatest hits collections are just a cheap way that bands use to make easy money. - Don't you agree?

    Yep.

What do you think of greatest hits collections? Are they necessary?

They're a bit stupid to be honest. If you liked a band you have all the songs most likely anyway so what's the point in putting them all together? Anyone can make a compilation CD. They really aren't necessary at all.

What greatest hits collections do you have? name them all if possible.

Um, just Arteyu's and I copied my mum's Queen one and that's them all.

What is your favorite greatest hits collection?

Well, out of the two i'd have to say Atreyu's.

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?

They should really do them at the end of their career so that fans can look back at their best songs. So i'd say about 6 or 7 albums, enough for them to have had a distinguished career.

Do you recommend greatest hits collections for new fans?

Nah, you get caught up in the "best" songs rather than making your own mind up.

Some people think that greatest hits collections are just a cheap way that bands use to make easy money. - Don't you agree?

Yes. Some people will buy anything.

What do you think of greatest hits collections? Are they necessary?
It depends really. If an artist/band has come out with at least two or three albums, then I really don't see the point of wanting to have one out all of a sudden. But in a way, there are bands that are trying to get new fans. So by creating a CD with all of their greatest hits, then I see why not.

What greatest hits collections do you have? name them all if possible.
I don't own any. Personally, when I discover a new band, I like to check out their old albums along with the songs that haven't been put on their Greatest Hits album if they had one out.

What is your favorite greatest hits collection?
    See above. ^

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?
I would say at least four albums. Maybe even five.

Do you recommend greatest hits collections for new fans?
Sure. Aside from checking out their older stuff, then go for it.

Some people think that greatest hits collections are just a cheap way that bands use to make easy money. - Don't you agree?

Haha. Aren't all CD's a way of making money? Of course, a new album with new tracks can take some time compared to a Greatest Hits album, but I would have to say yeah. It is a quick, effortless, and easy way to make money.

I'm going to the Milwaukee show. Why?

    Reel Big Fish
    The Aggrolites
    The Horrorpops
    MC Chris

Otherwise I wouldn't be stepping foot near there.

EDIT: I dont know what happened here....I did answer all the questions but they didnt all appear for some reason, so I'll answer them again...

What do you think of greatest hits collections? Are they necessary?

They are not necessary but are useful if you want to put on a CD of your fav band and listen to some of your famous track without changing CD all the time, they are also nice to have if they have unreleased tracks or lots of B-sides with them. Useful yeah, but definatly not necesary...

What greatest hits collections do you have? name them all if possible.

I have a few laying around, Metallica, Queen, Green Day are some off the top of my head.

What is your favorite greatest hits collection?

Metallica's is always fun and Green Day's is good for nostalgia reasons.

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?

It totally depends, 2 or 3 singles per albums so lets say 4-7

Do you recommend greatest hits collections for new fans?

Sometimes, its a good way to introduce a person to the variety of styles a band can have or for showing them the hits that everyone will know. It will also let them decide themselves which albums they should look into.

Some people think that greatest hits collections are just a cheap way that bands use to make easy money. - Don't you agree?

Basically yeah, but they can be useful.

Someone mentioned the Warped Tour. By extension, let's talk about festivals!

    Okay.

Are you heading to any festivals this year? Details, if you would oblige.

Been to any before? Got any memories to share?

Any festivals that you'd love to go to this year, but can't make? Why do they seem so good?

Finally, there's a debate just now in the UK that festivals are becoming too expensive and losing their spirit because of it. Do you feel that festivals have become too much like monetary conquests that exclude the kinds of people who led to their inception? Please bear in mind I'm asking as one day, non-camping tickets to UK festivals never cost less than £80. Even Indian Summer in Glasgow, which is total crap, and the Wicker Man, which is pretty shit too.

    I will answer myself now.

This year, I am going to upwards of three festivals, not sure yet. I know that I am definitely attending Prystanek Woodstock, Bielawa and Jarocien in Poland, and we might stop at some littler ones we find on our tour of the country. I have no idea who is playing, but I've been told guitars will be there, so I don't really mind. It's not so much about the music, really. I just want to be in a tent with thousands of other people, live music of some description, and an oppotunity to mong. Prystanek is Europe's biggest open-air festival, and is completely free; the other two are silly cheap. I cannot afford to festival in my own country with bands whose names I know, but in a way, I'm looking forward to overseas festivals more than I would T In The Park. It's just going to be so different and ace.

I have never been to a festival before. Well, I went to a Radio One Big Weekend once when I was younger, but Feeder were the headliners, and it was awful. My brother, cousin and I found a shopping trolley to play with and left the 'music' behind. Aside from that, I've never had the money.

I'd love to go to T in the Park if it wasn't so expensive. RATM are playing, and I'd love to see them live. Also, the Hydro Connect festival in Inverurie looks really good this year. KT Tunstall and Camera Obscura are playing. I'm sure the Reading and Leeds band lists will be as tantalising as ever too. Rock Ness looked pretty good. Glastonbury didn't look so great this year, though. Martha Wainwright was probably my favourite there. I spent its opening night dancing and singing with 40,000 people to Radiohead on Glasgow Green. Oh yes!

Yes. I've heard that festivals used to be about folky, hippie people with no money getting together for music. Now, myself and most of my friends can't afford to go to them, so we're either heading overseas or coming up with ideas for breaking into the gigs. How annoying.

Summerfest on Friday. Big D and the Kids Table, Suburban Legends, and Less than Jake. Yes please! Also The Warped Tour this year, then the Milwaukee Noise Fest.

Been to any before? Got any memories to share?

Summerfest many times, mostly to go see Cowboy Mouth.
Ozzfest for Dimmu Borgir, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Slayer.
No memories to speak of other than some good shows.

Any festivals that you'd love to go to this year, but can't make? Why do they seem so good?

I'd love to go to Rothbury to go see Primus, but tickets are $400. The only acts I'd be interested in seeing would be Primus, Zappa Plays Zappa (again), and maybe Snoop Dogg.

Finally, there's a debate just now in the UK that festivals are becoming too expensive and losing their spirit because of it. Do you feel that festivals have become too much like monetary conquests that exclude the kinds of people who led to their inception? See above post, also I would have loved to go to Summer Camp to go see Clutch and Dub Trio, but damn. $100+ to go to a hippy festival?

    Those hippies sure know business.

I should have been going to Hellfest in France this year but due to lack of funds of my friend’s part, we abandoned the idea this time. However, there is something in my town called Haigh Fest but I doubt that could count as one.

Been to any before? Got any memories to share?

I’ve never been to a festival, ever. Which sort of makes me feel as though I’ve been left out of something rather enjoyable. Then again, its hard to find a good festival for me in this country.

Any festivals that you'd love to go to this year, but can't make? Why do they seem so good?

As mentioned above, Hellfest is one I’d love to go to. Also there is one in Finland which I can’t remember what its call (if any member knows feel free to call me an idiot, hit me with a stick and force me over there ^^;;;; ). I’d probably like to go to Download as well but only for the second and third stages if I’m honest. Reasons for why they seem good? I don’t know really. My reason ain’t all that good. I just want to see bands I like and try others that might be similar or different to them.

Although I’ve never been to one, I do think festivals are over priced sometimes but it does depend on how you look at it. I’ll use one I’m roughly sure of the price for: Download. For the 3 day camping stay over there its something like £120+ per person and this price can vary depending accommodation. So really I think if there are a lot of bands there you like, its well worth the money. But sticking to prices, to go over to Hellfest it was something like 120 Euros. Now I don’t know the current exchange rate for pounds to euros but I think that’s is substantially cheaper then what I’d have to pay for Download. Then again travel and accommodation come into play with that price >.< However, after my big rant on the expense (and almost missing out the point of the question ^^;;; ) I think that regardless of how much it may cost, people don't lose their spirit to go to one. I mean if you see some of the crowds at these things, their all cheering and moving to whoever is on.

Are you heading to any festivals this year? Details, if you would oblige.

Well I was already at Tuska Music festival this past weekend which was awesome. I had backstage passes again which was nice too.

Thursday:Amorphis and Nightwish, not technically a part of Tuska but more like a Nightwish concert in ascociation(SP?) with Tuska. Amorphis were great and Nightwish ruled like always. Anette is one amazing singer, she pulled off The Siren with no effort at all and made Slaying the Dreamer and Sleeping Sun amazing.

Friday: I stopped by to see Amon Armath, Stam1ina and Carcass which were all ok and Dimmu Borgir as headliners were really good. I'm not a fan of Dimmu but the show was really good and the atmosphere amazing.

Saturday: Not many bands I was into this day. I only saw a couple, Fields of the Nephlim, Kreator and Morbid Angel. Morbid Angel seriously had the biggest pit ever. It must have been 15-20 meters across.

Sunday: Killswitch Engage were great, really good and I survived the wall of death. Sonata Arctica are a band I'm not really into but my girlfriend likes them so I watched for a bit before heading backstage. I saw Nile for a little, but they didn't particularly interest me. Slayer, as headliner, were amazing as always.

Been to any before? Got any memories to share?

I've been to Tuska many times but only had backstage passes twice now. I've been to many other Finnish music festivals but none abroad I think.

Any festivals that you'd love to go to this year, but can't make? Why do they seem so good?

I'd love to go to Reading or Download at some point simply because they are so much bigger than any festivals in Finland which means there is so many more bands and people.

I cant really answer this as I dont live in England, but ill compare it to Tuska for you guys. 3 day Tuska ticket costs 90€/60 pounds. Camping cost 5€ per person per tent per night. So if you have a 3 day ticket and 1 tent with 2 people staying in it Tuska would cost a total of 135€ for the whole weekend. Thats about 90 pounds. A big difference.

Oh and I forgot to put this in my previous post: Welcome to everyone thats joined since I last posted here^^

I'm sorry to say that I'm not. Just no funds for it, yet. next year though, once I have a great paying job, I'll be making it to a couple.

Been to any before? Got any memories to share?

I actually haven't been to any festivals before. I almost made it to Ozzfest two years ago, but my mom wouldn't let me skip the first day of school to go. Which is to bad, because she wanted to go too (Disturbed, SOAD, and a few other REALLY awesome bands were on the ticket)

Any festivals that you'd love to go to this year, but can't make? Why do they seem so good?

Projekt Revolution looks like a pretty awesome tour, and it's basically the only one that comes through North Carolina, except for Ozzfest, and Warped Tour.

Linkin Park, Chris Cornell and The Bravery are all headliners, with a fourth band whose name I can't recall. The side stage looks ok, as it features Atreyu, and three other bands.

I am not going to any concerts this year and i am annoyed because of that. I was looking at getting tickets to see download festival but after seeing a £150 price tag i kinda gave up on the idea. I've been trying to get to taste of chaos for years but it always falls at the wrong time for me.

Warped tour... now that would be immense. That's the one concert i would sell my mum to see!

Please rub it in m face and tell me how awesome these festivals are......

It's been a bit slow around here so I'll start a new discussion I think.

Which musician would you most like to meet and sit down and have a talk with, past or present.

I would love to sit down and have a proper talk about music and such with Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish. I know the Nightwish guys a little and I've met him in passing but I have never had a chance to sit down and talk with him. I'd loved to have met Kurt Cobain and talk about all kinds of things. There are others but they dont really come to mind right now.

Possibly Akira Yamaoka. I just love his music, and he's so weird that I think we'd have some really interesting chats. I'd also like to ask him what he thinks of certain elements in Silent Hill, since he's pretty much one of the biggest parts of the game and the music production.

You all know what I'm gonna say. AMY LEE. To talk to her would be amazing. Even for just a second. I predict we'd have random conersations at first, and then deep ones. It'd be fun. =D

I'd also like to meet M. Shadows (Matt Saunders, Avenged Sevenfold frontman). Yeah, he's pretty cocky. It'd be great to see what he's like in person, much like any of the musicians in bands I like

Nuff said. And I'd be the happiest guy if I ever got a chance to talk to Cristina. Haha. I'd probably so starstuck that I wouldn't know what to say. I hear the band's pretty down to earth when meeting fans and chatting with them. So it'd be really cool talking to all of them.

Another band I would want to sit down and talk with would be Theatre Des Vampires. Their vampiric image along with their music is unique. And it'd be interesting talking to them. I wish Lord Vampyr was still them though. It'd be golden talking to him too.

Crikey, there are a few. Must agree with You, talking to Kurt Kobain would be brilliant and an honour, the man was so dedicated to music it'd be interesting to get his views of the current scene today.

I'd love to see his reaction to some bands becoming "mainstream" just to get more albums sold. Dear old Kurt's probably already turned in his grave over this mind.

A few come to mind. The first would have to be Amy Lee. I hold a great deal of respect for her. I suppose you could say I look up to her. It would be really amazing to sit down and talk to her, whether its about something random or not. Though, I do think she would have good advice to offer, and it would be pretty awesome to recieve such a gift.

The second would have to be someone everyone on this forum should know. Nobuo Uematsu. I also hold a great deal of respect for this man. I mean really, he's composed hundreds of top-notch songs (I have 260, and only one or two albums O_O). That's a feat that not everyone can boast. Sure a lot artists/composers have many, many, songs, but how many of those many are actually really good? I, once again, would like to talk to this artist for the advice he could give. I would also love to hear of some of the experiences he's had while working with Square and the other companies he's composed for.

The third artist would be one from the past: John Lennon. I think the reasons should go without saying, haha. He was an amazing man with an amazing mind that wrote amazing music.

Other than Akira Yamaoka, I would have to say Bjork. I believe we have various qualities in common that would lead to interesting chats.

I know a girl who is an Evanesence nut and she's met Amy Lee on a few different ocassions. She is apparently, a very lovely person.
I'm personally not a fan of their music, though, excluding their instrumental tracks. She pratically LIVES for them. She mentioned that the music helped her to overcome the death of her father. (And yes, it is a genuine story. I've known her and her sister and family for years. No random pity-story.)

Kurt Cobain. He's a man that's always interested me, especially after seeing that film made through real interviews with him published by madmen. I also wouldn't mind a chat with that Emilie Autumn (sp?). Her music while not exactly fitting with my tastes, makes me feel a chat with her could be pretty damned interesting... Or not, but either way...

And I wouldn't mind hanging with any generic partying rock band. That'd be pretty damned fun.

Of course I could say that I'd like to meet all of my favorite bands and stuff, but I don't think that would be my priority. I'd like to meet John Cage, first of all. Avant Garde music wouldn't be where it is today without him. Also John Zorn. Not only is his music amazing, his creativity almost unmatched by any other human being, but I'd like to talk with him about his outlook on music, his writing style (if you don't know, he has a bizarre style of composing, in which he doesn't really write sheet music), and a bunch of other things that don't come to mind as I'm typing this. The last person I'd really want to meet would be Mike Patton. I'm a huge Mike Patton fan, and I'd love to get a chance to hear in person his outlooks on music.

    Honorable Mentions:
    Frank Zappa (duh)
    Joe Preston
    Trevor Dunn
    Steve Reich

    Amongst others...

    I forgot one!

Varg Vikernes. I was reading more about his story today. I think it'd be really strange to sit down and talk to the man who made music his life until he was imprisoned for 21 years for killing Euronymous from the band Mayhem.

Sure, he's done some idiotic things... like burning down three churches but I don't think he was completely blameless for killing Euronymous... Euronymous had a big plan of killing Varg and, I quote: tying him down and violently torturing him and videotaping it. They were both in the wrong.

So yeah, I'd like to talk to him.

I forgot one too. Except it's not really a sit and chat. I want to meet Willy Mason, go out with him to a movie, maybe a folk club too where he could sing 'When the Leaves Have Fallen' (which he would, of course, dedicate to me and spend staring into my eyes alone, ignoring the rest of the crowd and their rapturous applause, perhaps asking me for my hand in marriage after the crowd have calmed down for extra effect), and then return to his place (charming, obscurely cluttered and oh so bohéme, cushions and candles aplenty, of course) and let his deep, deep voice and beautiful, Titan-esque soldiers and gentle touch carry me off. One day. I swear to God. In New York. His place would be a studio, you see, with views out over the bay, and the city would hush just for us. AND he'd make me perfect eggs and bacon for breakfast, with tea unbecoming of an American.

^^^^Wow you have that planned out well. I hope it works out for both of you

I've also thought of another person I'd like to meet: Hans Zimmer. Some of the work that guy has done is phenominal and I'd love to maybe collaborate with him and randomly write some music with him. It would be such an experience...

Hah, just thought I'd correct my ancient post on Greatest hits Collections: I apparently own a ton of them. here's the list

    Black Sabbath
    Fuel
    Red Hot Chili Peppers
    Green Day's International Superhits
    Korn.

and I've probably got more lying around, as I haven't organized the music on my computer yet.

    Anyway: Discussion!

Discographies: What are your opinions, do you like to collect all the albums by a band? do you own any? If so, what is your favorite discography.

(For those that don't know, a discography is the entire collection of albums by an artist or band)

I own discographies, by Godsmack, System of a Down, Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, Fuel, Red hot Chili Peppers, The White Stripes, Primus, Tesla, Green Day, Alice in Chains, and I had Disturbed's until they released a new album.

Discographies: What are your opinions, do you like to collect all the albums by a band? do you own any? If so, what is your favorite discography.

It depends on the band and how much I like their music. There's some bands that I like about a few songs of theirs and I'm completely fine if I don't get all of their stuff. I do like checking out a band and their older and newer stuff though whenever I discover a new band. But in order for me to go all out and get pretty much everything off a band, they have to stand out to me. And by collecting their stuff...you mean downloads or CD's? >< I have a mixture of both. It's hard actually purchasing albums if a band doesn't have a major distributor or if their stuff is sold on the other side of the world.

    Anyways, here's some I have:

    Angelspit
    -Nurse Grenade
    -Krankhaus
    -Blood Death Ivory

    Crematory
    -Believe
    -Pray
    -Revolution

I don't have their older stuff though. =/ I need to look online for it most likely

    Disturbed
    -The Sickness
    -Believe
    -Ten Thousand Fists
    -Indestructible

I also have most of their B-sides. The only ones I'm missing is "Monster" and "Two Worlds".

    Dope
    -Felons And Revolutionaries
    -Life
    -Group Therapy
    -American Apathy

They have a new album coming out sometime this year. Definitely getting it.

Drowning Pool (I used to be obsessed with them. ><)
    -Sinner
    -Desensitized
-Full Circle (I hate this album. I didn't care for their new lead singer. But I was a hardcore DP fan back then. )

Evanescence (Another band I used to be obsessed with.)
    -Evanescence EP
    -Sound Asleep EP
    -Not For Your Ears
    -Origin
    -Fallen
    -Anywhere But Home
    -The Open Door

    Kidneythieves
    -Trickster
    -Phi In The Sky
    -Zerospace

LACUNA COIL (You knew this was coming. )
    -Lacuna Coil EP
    -In A Reverie
    -Unleashed Memories
    -Comalies
    -Karmacode

I need to actually BUY their stuff. These are just downloads. I know they have Comalies and Karmacode out here. Their older stuff I doubt though. BUT I'M GONNA GET IT! =D

    Mandragora Scream
    -Mandragora Scream EP
    -Fairytales From Hell's Caves
    -A Whisper Of Dew
    -Madhouse

    Opeth (Barely gotten into them.)
    -Watershed
    -Blackwater Park

They have a load more. Just haven't gotten to it yet.

    Theatre Des Vampires
    -Bloody Lunatic Asylum
    -Suicide Vampire
    -Vampryrisme
-Nightbreed Of Macabria (All-time favorite by them.)
    -Pleasure And Pain

I didn't bother with their "Anima Noir". I hated it when I listened to the previews. I miss Lord Vampyr.

    ThouShaltNot
    -ThouShaltNot
    -You'll Wake Up To Yesterday
    -The Holiness Of Now

Just need one more. I'm not going to even bother with their latest one.

    Within Temptation
    -Enter
    -The Dance
    -Mother Earth
    -The Silent Force
    -The Heart Of Everything

I have most of their B-sides as well. I'm missing "A World Of Make Believe" and another one I'm sure. Their stuff's finally going to be out on the shelves over here next month.

I am back..but..Wow! I've missed alot! Let me see..

First of all, I'll answer my own questions regarding Greatest hits Collections:

What do you think of greatest hits collections? Are they necessary?

I own a lot of greatest hits albums so I'll say yes! they are necessary. Greatest hits collections are a good start for someone just getting into a band. However, It really bugs me when people just buy a greatest hit album and stick to it. Like they don't bother to listen to original albums and think that those songs on the greatest hits albums are the best ones and the only ones worthy of listening to.

What greatest hits collections do you have? name them all if possible.

    • Good Times Bad Times...Ten Years of Godsmack - Godsmack
    • Greatest Hits - Bob Seger
    • Retrospective 2 - Sevendust
    • The Essential Alice in Chains - Alice In Chains
    • The Hits: Chapter One - Backstreet Boys
    • The Rules of Hell - Black Sabbath
    • The Best of 1990–2000 - U2
    • Playlist: The Very Best of Korn - Korn
    • Greatest Hits - Spice Girls...>.>
    • My Prerogative - Britney Spears...>.>

Someone has mentioned that he has a greatest hits collection by Metallica! Correct me If I am wrong but I am pretty sure that Metallica didn't release an official greatest hits collection because James Hatfield is against that idea!

What is your favorite greatest hits collection?

Good Times Bad Times...Ten Years of Godsmack! Amazing album! It includes more than 15 songs of their best songs ever. The album also includes and a rare, bristling Godsmack cover of Led Zeppelin’s classic 1969 debut single Good Times Bad Times and an amazing acoustic live performance in Las Vegas, Nevada at The House of Blues.

These guys have enjoyed great success in hard rock, They have charted an amazing total of 13 hits with four #1’s and I'm so ****ing happy for them. Godsmack is the shit!

How many singles or albums do you think an artist should release before doing a greatest hits collection?

I think 5 or 6 albums is a good minimum before a band puts out a greatest hits collection. They should also have at least a few actual hits before they can release that album .. I also think any artist who has been around for 10 years is entitled to one.

Do you recommend greatest hits collections for new fans?

Yes. I believe that Greatest hits collections were found for old fans and new fans alike.

Some people think that greatest hits collections are just a cheap way that bands use to make easy money. - Don't you agree?

Not really, Greatest hits collections are really a nice thing especially when they come with an extra track! Spice Girls did the same thing by putting one (maybe two) new song(s) in their greatest hits collection.

    ~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

    You's questions:

Which musician would you most like to meet and sit down and have a talk with, past or present.

Godsmack frontman...SULLY ERNA! I have always admired all his works. He is a killer singer and a drummer, he has such a powerful voice and his lyrics are great but reading his book "The Paths We Choose" made me want to meet him more than before.

Known by most as the frontman of Godsmack, Erna knew people would expect him to write about the band. Instead, he told stories of his life all the way up to the point Godsmack got signed to a major record label. He simply gives a good reason why he is who he is and how he became that person.

I love his honesty! He shares all the good and bad he's gone through, and you can really relate to a lot of it. I hope he writes more. It would be great if he continues to let us follow him through his life with the band. I just love that Sully!
