I actually was unaware that this was an option. I would not use it though because I always want others to be aware of my prescence.
So I have noticed there are a number of members here that like to use the ghost option that makes them invisible when viewing "who's online".
I am curious as to why people use this option and why people choose not to use this option.
Also if there is a story as to why you made the choice to switch to hide mode feel free to share it.

Same as Josh. I also don't see the point of hiding, unless you want to avoid someone.

Since I never log out of TFF, I never have to log back in so I don't get the option to 'go invisible'.
I don't really see much of a point in hiding on TFF. Since there isn't any live chat feature there is no point in not telling other members that you are online. I suppose if say, your mother was on TFF and she wanted you to do something and you wanted to conceal that you were on the site it would be practical. But I get the feeling nobody is in that situation.
i dont do it on TFF, but i always signed in as invisible on another forum. honestly, at first i did this because i didn't want people to know i was on there constantly; but then i later did it because i didn't want to talk to people who would try and strike up a convo everytime they realized i was online. those silly people on the interwebs.....

I used to hide because I didn't feel like talking to people other than on the threads. I don't do it anymore though.
You're all just jealous because you're not in the ninja group
I hide because one, I'm always ****in online so I don't want people thinking I have no life, and two sometimes I can't reply to vms and pms so I'd rather not have people getting butt hurt over them thinking I'm ignoring them and later asking " why are you ignoring meee? :'( "
Also, I stalk everyone because I think you're all sexy.
Wait.....how do you know that? O.O
In all seriousness, though I never understood why people would hide until I read some of the answers. I'd be hurt if I thought someone was ignoring me, even when that isn't the case. I'd also hide if I wanted to avoid everyone when I'm not in a talkative mood.

Hmm, other than having the cool-looking orange online/offline icon, I see no reason to be invisible. Actually, I find it kind of annoying. Sometimes I need to get to someone urgently and I don't have their email/MSN or whatever,m and I have no clue when I can or can't message them and get a reply.

See, I'm lazy. And if no one knows when I'm online, they don't know when I've read their messages or not, or looked at General Gaming, or whatever. So I can put stuff off without people knowing that I didn't do something about something the first time I saw it. Also, I like to be all mysterious and shit... like a ninja. (Yet I have a pirate for my avatar... Conflict of interests?!! )
Furthermore, I switched to invisible mode a long time ago, and it just seems to be the norm for me anymore. Too lazy to switch it back. Anyhoo...

^What he said.
Except it's more "GET OUT MY BUSINESS" than laziness. I like interacting with people on this forum. But I do not like being guilted into interacting with people on this forum. If I haven't responded, I just haven't, it's not personal. And if someone DOES get after me about why haven't I responded, it will take me even longer to respond because now I'm put off.
If I'm invisible, no one asks why I viewed my profile and didn't immediately respond. So I don't get irritated and ignore people. It's best for everyone.
tl;dr: I'm a snotty bitch.

Most of the time people use the hide function just so people won't talk to them or if they are online a lot. Personally i could careless what people think if i am on a lot, just shows that i am active in the forums and i like talking to people so i won't hide at all
I'm the same as Ocean and Telegraph, except I don't really bother to hide because I don't care enough to. I reply when I feel like it. And if I actually see something going down I take care of it.
Honestly, if someone bitches at you for not responding fast enough, then they don't really have a life. The way I look at it is if you wanted to talk to someone and have a lengthy conversation with them, then add them on msn or aim, or whatever works best for you. PMs and VMs are great, short time solutions for non-thread/spam topics, but they get on my nerves after a while. It's nothing personal if I don't reply (98.5% of the time anyway), just the system.
Also, it looks like I'm on TFF 24/7 to most people. Which is half the truth... I just keep this place on a tab and my laptop is on all day. Sooo... I'm not always here. Even when I do take a look at the site, it's usually just a quick look before I do something else, so I don't reply to my messages promptly. If I hide, I'll still do the same things. So I don't really care if people see me online or not.
There were three times when I was a ninja for a while; two times were following an argument with certain members (something personal, and a too-friendly stalker who really pissed me off), and another time when I was being stalked by a creepy member who apparently stalked most of the TFF females, and constantly wanted me on msn with him.
I thought it was "What are you hiding" and was just going to write "Corpses".
Habitant vegetable soup blows the balls off every other vegetable soup
Heh, good answer.
It used to be because I was active ALLOFTHETIME and I would get bothered incessantly whenever I was online, even if I was just trying to read, sooooo... I guess I've never bothered to change it back to visible.
