What is the most important lesson/s you’ve learned in life?

I would like to point out that it would be great if we could just post one lesson at a time. I feel it could help this thread go on a bit longer. Explain however you would like, no specific details required, examples would be excellent as always though.

One of many lessons I have learned in life: "if you are given an inch you don't need to take a mile."

Edited: I had a longer post but I felt like it was just to much personal information.

To assume that someone is thinking bad thoughts is equivalent to thinking one yourself.

Very good point you bring up their. To over think a situation when none is needed can lead to more harm then good. Exspecially when the overthinking is filled with negativity!

To always look on the bright side, even when there doesn't seem to be one. Wallowing in negativity won't make life better, but keeping a positive mindset will.

"Everyone was so happy. 'Great job. You did it. You saved us... all.' There were too many smiles to count.
But now...When I look back... The people who should be here aren't.
The ones who should be smiling with me aren't here."

    Enjoy the little things.

But seriously. My nan used to surprise me with a bag of sweets or something now and then. She can't do that any more because she broke her hip and hasn't left the house in over two months. She used to enjoy getting out and about, and feeling all independent. She used to go and sit in the bakery, have a coffee and a roll or cake and talk with the ladies and other older people who work and go there. The guy in Greggs near work would give me a free tea every morning. My dog gently licks my nose when I put it in front of him - he doesn't do that with anyone else. The way my boyfriend smiles at me when I do something cute. The sound of rain. Smell of cut grass. Getting a text message or IM from someone you've not heard from in a while. That mini-heart attack when you slip on ice but catch your balance.

So I guess enjoy them, and don't take them for granted.

    Very interesting fact Clint!

    Here's another:

Water will also never deplenish, it is just recycled. So imagine how much water that you and I have ingested has already been discarded by other beings throught it's exsistance.

That wasn't a fact about water. That is the most important lesson I've learned in life.

And water is always deplenished. When I send it down the drain, it's gone, and I can't get it back, which is okay. I don't want it anyway. Fish have sex in it. Water is polluted by the stank of frothy fish jizz. No matter how much you filter it, you can't get rid of the jizz. It is impossible. Though I heard the Environmental Protection Agency is working closely with NASA to develop filters specifically to eliminate fish jizz in water.

Treat everyone you meet like they're your next best friend.

My dad taught me this from a very young age and is something he & my mom have always lived by.

I try to live by this as well, but I'm much more wary of people than my parents are/were. I've been screwed over and hurt by so many people that were supposed to be my friends and I've watched my parents get mega screwed over by people they at one time thought very highly of, and the 3 of us have been ****ed over by my brother & his pos wife many times.

I give everyone a chance. I don't do second chances. Ever. I don't have room in my life to take risks like that.

I've learned a lot about people especially over the past 12 months, but the basic thing I can think of is "if it's too good to be true, it probably is." Wish I would of kept that in mind, but it's way easier said than done when you have emotions and feelings playing with you.

Another thing that I want to pass down to people is, there are a lot of genuinely good people in this world. In the same vein though, there are people with the potential to tear you down and ruin you, and they might not even have a motive or reason to do so, other than the fact that they can do it. Be careful, and keep your guard up.

Ish. My parents have gotten screwed over a few times by people because my mom REFUSES to believe that someone would be a leech. Sadly I pick up some things from her. My life is young though and one thing I have learned is... no matter how much you hate schooling, its better to just stick it out. I have a friend a few years older then me who is now prego and has no place to live and an idiot boyfriend. I think she would have been okay if she stayed in school

Excellent reply their Sheechiibii! Keeping a positive attitude is not only essential for a level headed mind, it is also vital to your overall well being physically just as it is mentally.

    Thanks for sharing!

You know I've always considered myself to be a good person. Now that doesn't mean I didn't understand that I have my faults, we all do, and I have hurt others myself as well though not intentionally. At times, especially at a younger age, I catch myself believing everyone is like myself and are good souls. Sadly I've had to learn the hard way that this isn't the case. We all should be weary of strangers but give them the chance to prove themselves, and the only thing I have found that does so is time. It tells the tales of everyone, and will help you understand the true nature of that individual

Thank you for your post as well rocky! It was very deep on my end, and I can tell you put forth great insight from your personal life into it as well.

I'm sure the last part of that sentence sounded like a gimme (duh) but hopefully most will catch what I'm trying to say.

I will also edit this post little by little giving my insight at everyone else comments as well, and I really appreciate all of them!

Two pieces in the same vein. Don't be an English major; if you already know how to read and write, you're an English major already. Also, learn some kind of specialized skill in college that can make you marketable.

To not try to hang onto the friends that don't care for you and hang on to the people that do care.

I've experienced a lot of loss in the last few years it really put into perspective that life is too short to waste it on people who don't care.

To appreciate the moment. I am a dedicated person and constantly looking to achieve things. I have lists. Lists of everything I need to do, everything I need to pay off. All I do is achieve them. Once I do I try to do the next one straight away. I find it very hard to be happy in the now because I want to live in the better future. I try really hard to take it easy and remember that it's pretty good right now too!

basically.. "shit happens"... you can either wipe yourself off and flush the toilet, or set there and smell it and let it get worse. its not really about THE shit that happens because its gonna happen, but how you choose to react in shitty situations. shit!
ok keep on, its all shits n giggles until sombody giggles n shits....

Sometimes it's good to just give up. Sounds weird, doesn't it? So let me explain what I mean by that: I always heard people say that you should never give up, no matter what happens. When you're on your way, you have to go until the end. Lately, I've been wondering if that's the right choice. Wouldn't it be better to give up that way and walk down another road? It always depends on how you feel, what you've done so far, what you want to achieve in life. But if you feel like you're going down the wrong road, it might be better to give up and choose another way in life. People are too scared to give up these days. Mostly because other people tell us that we can't give up half-way down the road. (Parents say that a lot of times, at least my parents do that. Often. Too often!) Still, give up if you can't take it anymore. There will ALWAYS be another way, maybe even a BETTER way. Think positive. Sometimes there's no way it could be worse.
