Scientist extracts 45 million year old yeast... brews beer.

    Yep. You read that right.

Ancient Yeast Reborn in Modern Beer : Discovery News

Sept. 23, 2008 -- Trapped inside a Lebanese weevil covered in ancient Burmese amber, a tiny colony of bacteria and yeast has lain dormant for up to 45 million years. A decade ago Raul Cano, now a scientist at the California Polytechnic State University, drilled a tiny hole into the amber and extracted more than 2,000 different kinds of microscopic creatures.

Is that not the most ridiculously randomly awesome thing you've ever heard?

Life on this planet is about to end. If Resident Evil has taught me anything, it's that dormant bacteria leads to baaaad things.

I hope everyone has their zombie plans ready. If not, it's time to prepare because the T-Virus is coming. Don't just bring a knife.

    Until now!

Jin, you sound like my ex-roommate. It's creepy and bad. Stop now. You don't want to sound like a histrionic, schizoid, 80 pound midget, do you? Or maaaybe you do. >.>

They kind of went far off target with the beer from original intent, haha. Still awesome, though. I'd be willing to try it if I had the capability.

I think the idea of turning treatment toward dormancy rather than eradication could help in a lot of cases. Eradication obviously isn't cutting it in a lot of cases and is creating super-evolved, medicine-resistant pathogens. There is a concern of how to cause it to go back into dormancy again once it has already happened. Would the process be the same? I guess we'll just have to wait to see.
Why the hell is everyone's sig so long? Be polite and use a freakin' spoiler tag!:

    Them scientists is alright.

I think I'd love to get my hands on some myself after reading the article, and I'm stoked that great people like Raul Cano exist to help provide some interesting drinks. Now I'm just sad I don't have any drinks on me right now.

Well, if you would have read the article to it's fullest (a whole 6 paragraphs, covering 2 web pages) you would realise that the Yeast that was extracted from the Weevil was originally intended to

Cano's original goal was to find ancient microscopic creatures that might have some kind of medical value, particularly pharmaceutical drugs.
Granted, he went on an ark there, but, the founding of the yeast actually may help things in the long run.

Also, if you want to taste the beer, plan to make a trip to northern California....
