    School

Well, I've just started school again today, so I was wondering who here still goes to school. If you are in between semesters, you can either talk about your past semester, what you plan on doing, or both. I'll set up a little form for people to use if they choose:

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)

    What are you studying?

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)

    How much homework is assigned?

    How much studying is required?

    Anything else?

I'm actually pretty curious to see some responses. I think schooling is really important, and it is even worthwhile if you are only doing one or two online classes.

I'll make another post after I've been in for a while. Today was pretty much just introducing ourselves, but I'm already pretty scared from what the teachers have said. "You have to study two hours every night or you will not pass. If you complain, I will double your homework." =/

    Re: School

Since I'm starting up my next semester next Tuesday I'll do it for the upcoming semester.

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)
I'm at the university level, this will be my senior year of undergraduate studies at the University of Tampa

    What are you studying?
    I am a Biology major with a Pre-Medical concentration

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)
I'm a full-time student and I usually take between 15-18 hours but this semester being my last and being able to finish up light I'm taking only 13 hours. My classes are Biochemistry, Human Anatomy and Physiology I, Medical Terminology, and Ethics in Medicine

    How much homework is assigned?
Last semester I didn't really have a lot of homework per say but the studying that I needed to do was immense. Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy, Microbiology, and Physiology was a huge amount of studying and it took up a lot of my spare time.

    How much studying is required?
Guess I answered this in the last question. Lots for my last semester, CVA was the toughest by far.

    Anything else?
I recently submitted my application to medical school through AMCAS and was able to get some secondary applications but I have a feeling my first MCAT score isn't going to cut it so I'll probably be taking my MCAT again in May or June and re apply.

    Re: School

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)

I'm in an Early College program (not as prestigious as it sounds) so I take Highschool and College classes simultaneously

    What are you studying?

This semester I'm in an advanced History class, an Environmental Biology class, and the Highschool is same old Trig/Geo/Alg, Spanish, and English

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)

I go from around 8a.m. and get out at 3:40p.m. three days of the week, 5:15p.m. one day, and 2:05p.m. the other day.

    How much homework is assigned?

Not as much as one would expect. I estimate about a half an hour to an hour every night (depends on person)

    How much studying is required?

Supposedly a lot, but I never do. Never felt the need to

    Anything else?

This program is nice and rewarding, but could use a little challenge here and there

They tell us the same thing each year lol and I haven't studied more than a glance at my notes for a Psychology exam last semester."Three hours each night or you'll fall behind and fail!" Yeah, yeah. Although do what you feel you need to do, I'm not giving advice, just commenting lol

    Re: School

What level of schooling are you taking?

I attend Specerian College in Louisville Kentucky

    What are you studying?

I am studying IT(Information Technology). I have no emphasis on any specific field that I am going into. It was computer engineering, but I have abandoned that idea.

How often are you at school?

I am a full time student. I have six classes. they are slip up on Mon/Weds, and Tues/Thurs. So I am at my school for quite some time.

    How much homework is assigned?

There is not very much assigned. The lump of my grade comes from exams, and overall attendance, and participation.

    How much studying is required?

There is quite a bit of studying required. I have gone through my first week, and all my instructors already stated that if you don't study a shitload you are boned..

    University :>

    What are you studying?
    English & Maths
Yes, that's strange. Yes, I know I'm strange. And: I want to become a teacher.

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)
This semester: Only three days a week. Sometimes even only two. Like this week. I skipped today, as it's pretty useless to go to university sometimes...

    How much homework is assigned?
Not much, if you consider that you aren't forced to do it. But there are quite a few assignments to be done... but you mostly have a full week to do them. That really is okay to me.

    How much studying is required?
If you like, PRETTY MUCH. If you don't like that, it isn't very much. I have to learn quite much for Maths (okay, I just do my exercises each week...), for English it isn't much at all.

    Anything else?
I love love love Maths, maybe? XD

    Re: School

    What are you studying?
I'm studying Music, and I'm in my final year of undergrad studies. I'll be going on to a MA/PhD programme in Musicology (i.e., the historical study of music) at the graduate level next year.

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)
I'm a full time student. This semester, I'll be taking either 15 or 18 credits, depending on whether or not I decide to take one of the classes I'm currently enrolled in (it's not a requirement, but I just wanted to take it for fun >_<). I go to school five days a week, as my classes have never lined up conveniently enough for me to make it otherwise.

    How much homework is assigned?
I'm not as overwhelmed as I've been in past semesters, but, due to my interests and what I want to do at the graduate level, most of the classes I take are reading- and research- heavy, so there's a lot to do in that regard.

    How much studying is required?
Again, most of the stuff I have to do is geared towards projects and papers more than tests, so not too much studying, but it varies from class to class.

    Anything else?
I'd definitely continue to be a student my entire life if I could, as there are still so many more interests I'd love to pursue further (more language courses, history courses, literature stuff, etc.), but, as I've already been doing that for six years, it's finally time for me to start buckling down and focussing on what I really want to do most of all. Sad in a way, but I still enjoy what I'm doing, so it's not that bad.

    Re: School

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)
I go to a community college. I could have gone to a university, but I'm not that big a fan of sucking ****.

    What are you studying?
A form of engineering called environmental science.

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)
I'm not at school too much right now, because I have to get this goddamn trigonometry class out of the way, and it's so difficult that I have to devote my entire time to that one specific class, especially since it's a prerequisite to the four remaining fall semester classes that I need to take. Though I am also currently taking Haz Mat, but that's only once a week.

    How much homework is assigned?
Enough. Even if there wasn't homework assigned, I'd still do work outside of class. It's a good way to study.

    How much studying is required?
A lot. Not so much in mathematics courses, since there isn't any actual material to study, but there's a lot of crap to study for chemistry courses, but since science courses are easy as shit, the information is easy to remember.

    Anything else?
    I have a huge penis.

    Re: School

What level of schooling are you taking?
    University

    What are you studying?
I'm studying to be a nurse. Aside from my gen ed classes, I'm studying Anatomy/Physiology. Here on out, I will be taking microbiology, nutrition, and working on my clinicals.

How often are you at school?
    Full-time

    How much homework is assigned?
Enough. It seems like there is a lot, but they are all easy to do if you do it in a timely manner.

    How much studying is required?
6 hours a day, 1 hour per subject. If I still need more time, I'd add in another 30 minutes.

    Anything else?
After getting my degree in nursing, I will be spending two years gaining experience and then go to nursing school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

    Re: School

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)

My second semester of college begins next week.

    What are you studying?

Officially, general studies. Mostly cause you had to write something down and I was undecided. I'll end up with either English or whatever I need to enter the criminal forensics field.

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)

I shall be a part-time student, as I also work full time.

    How much homework is assigned?

    No idea. Haven't started yet.

    How much studying is required?

Don't know, don't particularly care. I actually do not need to study and in fact when I do, I tend to do worse on exams. So I don't bother. If I haven't learned the material, I haven't learned it. A few hours of cramming won't change that.

    Anything else?

Not really. It's kind of weird being back in school after so long. I've been out of high school for six years now and only just enrolled in college last semester. But, it does seem to be a common story around here, and I'm not the only one making late decisions about higher education.

    Re: School

I've been in school for a little while now, so I figured I would finally post a response to my own question.

What level of schooling are you taking? (Highschool, University, Other)
I'm at university level. My school is not really like most colleges, but I'll be getting my degree faster than going to a "normal" college, so whatever.

    What are you studying?
    Arabic.

How often are you at school? (Part-time, Full-time, Hours)
Well, I have school from 8-4 Monday through Friday. I then have additional study time with a teacher from 6:30-8:30 Monday through Thursday. Pretty much it's an all-day event.

    How much homework is assigned?
Right now there hasn't been much homework assigned because I've just started, but I've heard from people that have been in school for a while longer, and it seems like I'll probably be getting an hour or two of homework a night.

    How much studying is required?
Well, my teachers have all told me that at least two hours of studying is required to do well. I'm probably not going to be studying much longer than that because there are just not enough hours in the day. Some of my days are already 4-8 before those two hours of extra study if I didn't study during my meal breaks.

    Anything else?
Since I started school, I've realized how much school sucks. Going to school for 8-9 hours a day, and then having to study and do homework for another 3 hours per day is just ridiculous. It's also pretty annoying that half the time I don't understand what's going on in class. I've also heard that as many as half the students flunk out, so that's not reassuring. At least the class sizes are already pretty small, and I have good teachers.

I really do like studying foreign languages, though, so this is the best place for me, but I'm not sure if Arabic was the right language choice. =/ Some sounds are really hard to pronounce, and the writing is just mind boggling half the time. I suppose the writing's better than languages such as Chinese, but it's so annoying. At least with Chinese you know from the get go that you're just going to have to memorize all the characters for the words, but with Arabic, it's a trick. You think it's going to be easy because it uses an alphabet, but in 99% of materials the diacritic marks to indicate pronunciation are left out, so you just have to know the word and understand the context to be able to pronounce it correctly. Also, I'm studying Modern Standard Arabic, so it's pretty useless up front. Basically the only thing that is in Modern Standard is the news. It's probably the best to learn initially because all the dialects will be pretty easy to learn afterward, but up front it is not too useful unless I want to become a newscaster or something.

    Re: School

Im currently attending a local community college(Oklahoma City Community Aollege) for an AAS(associate of applied science) degree for medical research. However I did 2 years of study split between Oklahoma State University, and South Texas College. So I'll finish the AAS this semester, then be only a few classes away from the BA in this feild.

Right now I'm taking 6 classes, which comes to 19 credit hours.
    Microsoft Excell (blowoff class)
Intro to Statistics (easy so far, kindof a blowoff)
    Pharmacology(loads of reading)
Clinical Research Coordination(Lots and lots of referenceing a handbook)
    Clinical Research Design (Fairly simple)
Pathophysiology(Not as difficult as it sounds, I've had anatomy&physiology 1 and 2 before and saw most of this stuff before the some Radiology prep-classes)

All 6 of my classes are online, I only work 20 hours a week, and have minimal outside commitments so I usually finish my weeks work 2-3 days into the week(working about6 hours a day), and for the classes that require reading I generally read 10-15 pages most nights thoughout the week. I generally work ahead in my excell and stats classes scince everything is available all the time (I've been ahead for a while now, next week I'll have to start doing stuff again).
im taking the 6 classes so I can pick up the AAS a little faster, all that will be left is my summer internship, then I can get the BA taken care of. I'll likley stay in school untill I feel I'm making enough money to support myself and see to it that my parents are taken care of.

Does finantial aid piss anyone off? I don't quality becausemy singal dad just happens to make 51k annually. We're ok, but definately not rich. I've sunk 13k out of pocket for the past 2 years. luckily Oklahoma needs medical researchers, so I ditched the ridiologist path for a while and am taking advantage of getting all my MedResearch classes paid for by the labor union. (6 classes at a time, yeah, I'm milking it) fourtunately my dad encourages I stay with him untill I finish school, (stayed with family when I studied in texas). I hear room and board gets pricey.
