    Re: Poor Japan <(ToT)>

Currently, the statuses on Shigesato Itoi (the creator of the Earthbound/Mother series) and Tetsuya Nomura are also unaccounted for, in conjunction to Miyamoto. Though I do feel better about Miyamoto's status though, according to NoA, their Japan shores offices did not take any structural damage, AND there's a rumor that he may be in the states right now.

The fact that the fates of the creator of Earthbound and the character designer of Final Fantasy 13 are unknown... doesn't sit well with me. Hopefully they are able to make a response soon.

EDIT: Also, the VA for Link in Ocarina of time.. status unknown.

Scary fact: fifth largest earthquake that we know about, ever.

I think it's an absolute miracle that we are sending rescue teams and not industrial vacuum cleaners.

Oh, and the way the Richter scale works: it's not linear. The two earthquakes we've faced in NZ over the last months were 7.1 and 6.3 (I think). This was an 8.9 (last I heard), but was 8000 times more powerful. Again, a freaking miracle.

    Re: Poor Japan <(ToT)>

The combination of the earthquake and tsunami weren't too bad, especially for an 8.9 magnitude quake. I mean, sure, at least 300 people are confirmed dead, and an estimated 1,300 people have been killed, but at least the country was prepared.

They've been preparing for another massive earthquake following the 6.9 magnitude Kobe Earthquake of 1995, which killed 5,500 people. Compared to the greater magnitude of this recent one, and the estimated less lives lost, I'd say they were pretty well prepared.

The most nerve-racking part isn't even the earthquake or it's aftermath. It's those nuclear power plants and the radioactive leaks. And the overheating reactors, and the chance of two nuclear power plants exploding. But on top of it all, even if the two plants meltdown, it still won't be as bad as Chernobyl. I'm kind of impressed with Japan. They're handling the situation dashingly.

Well, does anybody understand what is going on with the nuclear power plants?
I haven't been watching the news lately.
Oh and, they said it might be a 9.1 Earthquake which is slightly ominous.

There was a failure in the backup power used to run the power cooling systems inside the plants. If the reactors overheat, the plants can melt down. It has been reported just recently in the past hour that the core at Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant's No. 1 reactor may be experiencing partial melting.

The good news is that many of the other reactor's temperatures are reportedly returning to normal. From what it seems at the moment, a full meltdown isn't very likely. More likely would be a partial release of radiation, much like the Three Mile Island incident in 1979.

Wait, total meltdown as in Chernobyl?(I seen it spelt 3 ways)
Hmm, and from what I remember, some people still are affected by the Chernobyl incident.

The Chernobyl plant exploded. That's a total meltdown. It released radioactive particles through a large blast radius, started radioactive forest fires, and released radioactive smoke into the atmosphere, spreading it for thousands of miles.

The area is safe now. It's been cleaned up, and although natural radiation levels for that area are higher than normal, it has little to no health hazard. Small exposure to low but unusual levels of radiation over long periods of time isn't dangerous. What is dangerous are high amounts of radiation exposure at once.

The Chernobyl incident was different, though. It wasn't caused by a power failure in cooling systems. It was caused by running the plant at high power on low power levels. There are ways to cool reactors without the cooling systems, such as liquid nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and various Halon substitutes.

Ohh, I see. Well, good thing the Japanese thought about everything early, being that even the word tsunami originated there.

    Latest news: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/japan-tsun...ectid=10711892

An explosion has been heard from a quake-hit Japanese nuclear plant and smoke seen billowing from it.

AFP and Japan's NHK TV reported an explosion at the Fukushima-Daiichi plant. The Tokyo Electric Power Company - which runs the plant - says four workers were injured.

The walls and roof of the plant were destroyed in the blast, according to NHK.

Fukushima Prefecture official Masato Abe says the cause is still under investigation, and it was unclear whether there was an explosion.
And che, that very first image speaks volumes. I 'de-friended' three people on Facebook yesterday for doing just that, and you have no idea the crazy shit people are coming up with to "predict" the next NZ earthquake. Pro-tip: Don't like the heat? Get out of the kitchen.

I am letting them have their beliefs. What are beliefs? I just looked it up on Dictionary.com | Free Online Dictionary for English Definitions.

    1. Something believed; an opinion or conviction: a belief that the earth is flat. (A disproven belief)

    2. Confidence in the truth or existence of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof: a statement unworthy of belief.

    3. Confidence; faith; trust: a child's belief in his parents. (Things are learned...taught. Religion, racism, ignorance)

    4. A religious tenet or tenets; religious creed or faith: the Christian belief.

It's already been stated that it won't 'explode'. While I don't really have a high-level understanding of the science behind nuclear fusion, I know enough to know they are not effective bombs.

Anyone else see the irony in Japan having nuclear power anyway?

Odin, you asked about the tsunami in the Pacific? It hit Hawai'i. I think the wave was ~1m. It posed very little, if any, terrestrial threat. It also hit my own city, at 7.35am this morning (it's now 10.35pm). Apparently it was a small wake, but not much else. Just a matter of being cautious.

The tsunami could have been more disasterous. I feel we've all been very lucky in the last few days.

Re: The 'end times'. People have been predicting these forever. The funny thing is, the simple fact that we currently exist proves that they have been wrong 100% of the time.

To use Old Testament passages referring to conflict, earthquakes and famines as signs of the apocalypse is stupid. Those things always happen.

In fact, the world would probably end if they stopped, as that has never happened.

They're still waiting for "The Big One" along that fault, too. Know what's really scary? The Sendai quake could be a foreshock to that one. Sendai is currently being recorded as the 4th largest quake in recorded history after being upgraded again 8.9-9.1. Japan's coast has been permanently shifted 2.4 metres (around 6 feet). The earth's axis shifted by 10 inches. The scale is...beyond comprehension.

Granted, they said Kobe could have been a precursor to the big one too. Time will tell.

Japan's building codes are unbelievable. I saw video of buildings swaying feet from side to side and not a single pane of popped glass. Their building engineers saved thousands of lives yesterday.

The reactor can explode, like any other high energy producing power source when damaged and overheated, but power plants aren't equipped to be WMD's. If the reactor explodes, it will release high amounts of radiation. It won't be like a thermonuclear bomb detonating.

From the reports, I've heard that the container housing the reactor was not damaged in the explosion, so if the reports aren't lying, the reactor itself is in tact, and radiation levels are returning to non-hazardous levels.

Those reports are probably just to calm the public, though. Most likely, the explosion caused the leak of uranium to expand, but we'll see.

Oh well, I sucks that it happened I guess; however considering the fact that they have very efficient building codes it's no big deal. The death toll is not bad at all considering Japans population density. It is true though the Nuclear Power Plant leaks and their possible explosions is the scarier matter here. I just hope that some loli and guro lovers died in the incident.

Oh Lordy Lordy when that Earth done shook and and that water came a-rising, I thought that was Jesus coming to call us all home.

Really, it's ****ing stupid to think that because of a few catastrophic events, we're all going to die. Lots of really bad shit happens... to everyone. It's not a sign of anything, except that tectonic plates are very finnicky and can shift on a whim. For all you know, some lobster can take a shit and off-balance everything causing another earthquake and tsunami, especially in that part of the world, where the plates are smaller and more unstable.

    It's science, not Jesus.

Just like the Mayan calendar. They ran out of space and it ended in 2012. What happens when 2011 ends? You throw the old calendar out and put up the 2012 one.

And lastly, the reason everyone jumped on Odin was because he said he likes the culture and women better than those of the American variety... and that's why he was sad. End of story.

I don't know what to think. Personally.

It's tragic that people died. Thats for damn sure.
But things like this happen all the time.

There have been no less than 12 major natural disasters in my lifetime.
We as human beings need to learn to deal with them.

And as was said previously. Japan's extremely effcient building codes probably saved hundreds, if not thousands of lives.

I was confused reading this but,I guess I should say thanks. ^-^

Does anybody know how large the quake was? I knew it was to be updated to 9.1, but what was the overall region of impact from the quake itself?
And if it was just a precursor, that freakin sucks.
I also heard that it was a partial meltdown and some chemical leakage.

Anyways, Maybe, not TRYING TO SOUND RUDE, it was kinda a good thing the quake if it couldn't been detected or stopped, happened in a place that had superior building codes and were use to tsunamis. Ehh, maybe not, but I think California would not have faired so well.

Your pathetic existence will shut down. I will make your lives end in ruin. Fear me, as you fear death. Not a threat, not a promise, but what must be finished. 7 final arcs...
