In all reality, the fireproofing on the steel was in the process of being removed and updated to a more current material. The impact of the planes shook a good deal of the existing fireproofing off, and without a doubt weakened and loosened the welded and bolted column and beam connections.
Fireproofing is essentially material made to absorb sprinkler water, to prevent heat from structurally affecting steel in a fire. It's the effect of grabbing a hot pan with a cold towel. Stripped steel is obviously more likely to bend or weaken under extreme heat, especially at bolt holes. Bolts are really only made for tensioning purposes (holding two pieces of steel together) and are shitty when a force is placed on them in an opposing direction.
Long story short, engineering was responsible for 9/11 and also responsible for both towers not collapsing onto the rest of the city.
Sorry for the long story. 9/11 still hurts. I'm in construction and actually inspect bolting and fireproofing. My old company was actually in the process of overseeing the installation of new fireproofing when shit happened.
