Why are old people so set in their ways? Why are old people, especially in this day, not open to change or open minded at all?

I was talking with a member here about this the other day. It's as if old people have been wrong about things so many years, and it's worked out for them because no one has corrected them, and so they believe it to be true because it works. Even though whatever they believe may not be true!

New advances are made, some of what they've learnt and believe no longer applies.
That said, their opinions should still be heard as when stuff still applies their words often contain a bit of wisdom and when their opinion is on something such as a craft they can often provide strategies/secrets to create a more masterful end product than a younger person with less experience.

EDIT: Thinking about it, pretty much everyone I know in their older years is quite capable - I get more misinformation and misplaced pride from some people mid 20s-mid 30s who think they know everything or are superior to the average person. Weird...

The old folks are actually really cool people if you take the time to get to know them. They have a lot of stories to share and valuable advice to give. They've gone through the same experiences we've been through and what better way is there other than to ask your seniors for an objective opinion?

They don't give a shit about what other people have to say about them or their beliefs if they come across as rude. Seriously, they wouldn't want to waste their own time and would just to tell you to gently caress off.

Maybe it's because I have been working with a lot of older people while volunteering/shadowing at the hospital but I happen to enjoy talking with old people. Well most of them, yes some of them are stubborn and angry at the world but the ones that aren't I find to have great stories about their lives.

This is my dad, he's old and his theory for everything is, "I'm old and I already know more than you" he always thinks he's right, but him being older doesn't mean he knows everything...it's opposite. He doesn't know how modern things like technology or new laws and such work, but he refuses to listen when someone tries to teach him something new.

I understand being knowledgeable, but if you're completely unwilling to listen and learn anything, or even consider you might be wrong there's a problem.

Some old people are ok, and some I find just plain rude.
I know some arnt open to change and others are. My partners nanny, always wants to keep up to date with things, altho she can't manage them, like mobile phones, tv's and dvd players, where as my nanny point blank refused to get rid of her old vcr.

Old people are a varied people, just like any other people. I've met some that are open minded and wise, and others are assholes who clearly resent the young. In a recent case, I even heard one of those "In my day" stories when someone didn't show up to work because they were sick.

My dad is a crowning example of a grumpy old man stuck in his ways, and he has been for at least the last decade. He's never wrong, and if something bad happens, someone needs to be to blame, and of course since he's never wrong, it's never him. That said... "Respect your elders" probably has some merit to it. Anyhoo...

The way I look at it, what better people to be able to cast a vote? Depending on the changes in the country in the past sixty or so years, you'd think they have enough experience and knowledge about each party to be able to decide what they want. I mean, you wouldn't give a fifteen year old the vote because they have no experience/acquired knowledge in order to vote - it would be a wasted poll for a joke or a parent/guardians second vote.

I totally agree that change is a good thing, but it might not always be the best thing. Why fix what's not broken?

I will say that some old people probably shouldn't vote. My grandmother thinks she's constantly right, and only seems to see/hear/feel what she wants to (apparently, I pushed an 87 year old over the other day, when all I did was carefully walk past her in the hallway... and she was still standing up perfectly fine when she made the allegations).

If anything, perhaps mental state of people over a certain age should be carefully considered before voting cards are handed out to them? Because giving a senile old woman a voting card sounds like an awesome waste of time.

It's a generalization that comes across as being somewhat condescending, even though I'm sure it wasn't meant to. It's like when someone tries to prove they aren't a racist by claiming that they think all black people are awesome. It's still a generalization that presents a group as an other.

Haha, I gotcha. I understand that not all old people great. Honestly, I was only speaking from all the old people I know personally rather than consider old people in general. Perhaps, I should have included that in my first post and clarified that better. @-@

You know, the four ladies that go to an upscale resturant for brunch after sunday church, then the four of them leave you a $5 dollar tip altogether after sitting on your table for over an hour. You sound like a charity... hounding people about how they need to give their money to causes that have nothing to do with them. Now if they earned the money through disdainful means, such as abusing the marriage system to rob their former husbands of all their net worth, then by all means hate them. Although, I do agree there should be a single, white, male fund. Everyone else has a charity and/or organization... yet time and again the single, white males are screwed over. That brings me to "Caucasian Month". How about December? Sounds like a good month to me. (this is clearly heavily laced in sarcasm)

But in all seriousness, I don't find old people that bad. And as for the voting issue, I think anyone who wishes to vote should have to pass a few political science exams, preferably college level. The mass majority of US citizens don't even know the difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate. How can one make a rational decision on who should represent them when they don't even know what they are voting for?

Old people are entitled to think whatever they want, as is anyone. But I'm sure no one actually disagrees with that.

In terms of observations, I do find that old people are more likely to be racist, or at least have strong views against immigration from 'non-traditional' (non-UK) places. Case in point, the only political party that has a stated anti-immigration perspective and has held seats in parliament is often supported by Grey Power, the national elderly persons organisation, which claims to be non-political but clearly is.

Some of this undoubtedly relates to how they were raised and what they lived through. My nana hates Japanese people, seriously. But she also lived through WWII, and threat of imminent invasion. It is thought by some that a Japanese submarine even managed to come inside Wellington harbour during the war (i.e. within a few kilometres of my house), though it is unlikely. They certainly did scout around the country, and bombed Australia. But Japan these days isn't anything like that, and it doesn't reflect on the Japanese culture.

So yeah, they're just set in their ways, often.

The old folks I've met haven't been as bad as that. Like my grandpa. He was well informed and searched up everything before he would decide to vote for anything. And the senior citizens at the convalescent home that I go to are all pretty cool too. True, some of them get uppity when you try to correct them about things or give them more information, but who can blame them? Young people do that too. Almost every single person I've ever met has had his or her own opinions on things, and got upset if someone else tried to encroach on those opinions.

Seriously, if it's just the "I'm not wrong because I myself know it for a fact that I'm right" mindset that you're upset about, it's not just old people. It's pretty much every damn person in the world. Including you, probably.

I have thought about this and have come to realise in my experience it's often the older people that embrace technology that seem to still be more or less accurate with their knowledge and many of the ones who aren't shun certain channels of information. Might be a coincidence, and I admit I don't know that large a sample of older people, but it seems accurate enough.

Also, Jin Peace will not allow Jin to be hunted like a non-endangered species!

The question shouldn't be "why are old people so set in their ways." It should be, why are young people so temperamental? Old people know what they're comfortable with. They've been around long enough to find what works best for them in their own minds. I find it rather disrespectful that so many people question and blatantly disrespect their elders. They're going to die soon. Let them be happy with whatever beliefs they hold about the world.
