bringing the world up to date...

i'm sure every town, city, county, providance, state, and or country has some silly misconception about them and this is the place to bring people outside of that area up to speed. so feel free to post some of the misconceptions about your area of the world and put the corrections out there for us to catch up on......

(figured this could be a little fun)

    oklahoma:

    misconception
people come here to see the great tribes and see their tee-pees
    truth
indian reservations are now mainly casinos and smoke shops (plus it would be hard to run a computer in a teepee because they leak!

    misconception
buffalos roam the open range everyone here
    truth
no they dont they are on reserves just like most endangered species

    misconception
thanks to that stupid girl on Americas Next Top Modle - we only have 4 T.V. channels
    truth
no we have plenty (like 6...... j/k) im sure we have everything thats availible to the rest of america

    misconception
theres nothing other then rednecks and hicks here
    truth
there are a variety of people here not just those listed above we have a very diverse community.

This should probably be in word games...

    These are misconceptions I've seen from American Tourists and unfortunatly non-tourists. Really I've been asked these questions about my home country >.>;

    Scotland

    Misconception:
Kilts are worn here all the time, it's rare to see people not wearing a kilt
    Truth:
In 16 years I've never saw a person wear a kilt as an everyday outfit.

    Misconception:
Haggis is a small animal that runs around the tops of hills in the highlands and is killed for it's meat
    Truth:
There is no such creature, just think of haggis as being Scotland's answer to Hot Dogs. Everything is in it, yet it tastes damn good!

    Misconception:
If one wanted to send mail to a place in Scotland the final three lines of the address would be:

    Scotland,
    England,
    UK

Truth: Scotland is not in England. That person was nearly personally strangled by myself when I visited Loch Ness a year or so ago.

well i though about putting it in word games but then i thought to myself that it is kind of just a random general chat, plus even though some of the content might (prolly will be) be funny in all actuality it is a serious thread and not a game.

so i figured out of the 2 general chat would be the best place to put it, so here it is haha. if the mods deem it so though they can move it if need be...

    oklahoma again

    misconception
almost everyone here has a horse, wears cowboys hats and carry a 6-shooter (ive actually heard this one alot!)
    truth
as in most states in the U.S. concealed carry is illeagle with out proper documentaion, so not alot of people carry peices around with them. sadly enough almost every one here drives cars (or atleast try too and fail at it) and for the whole cowboy get-up thats actually a big load of crap, not many people run around in tight pants, collared long sleeve shirts, boots and 5-gallon hats, sure some people do but the days of the wild west are lllllloooooonnnnnnnnggggggg gone.

    Dapto:

    Misconception:
    Dapto is a hole.
    Truth:
It's not sunken into the earth, so it's not a literal hole.

    Misconception:
All Dapto has is gambling on dog races.
    Truth:
We also have a decent pub, recently a big shopping centre and many ways of entertaining one's self so long as one knows where to look. ><

    Misconception:
Dapto's just a bunch of farmland and a couple houses.
    Truth:
Dapto WAS just a bunch of farmland and houses 20 years ago. Now it's on it's way from suburbia to being a city.

    Misconception:
    Dapto has a huge population.
    Truth:
Dapto has a fairly average population. It's just that some people count surrounding suburbs such as Koonawarra, Kanahooka, Brownsville etc as a part of Dapto.

Oh Lord, this is gonna be fun.

    New York City:

Misconception: New York City covers the entire state.

Truth: New York City is barely a tenth of the size of the state, land wise.

Misconception: There are no trees/ it's just an urban jungle.

Truth: There are plenty of trees and acres upon acres of parks and recreational areas. Even look at Central Park, in the dead center of Manhattan. It's an oasis!

Misconception: We awl have dis accent.

Truth: While many of us do sport these accents to a certain degree, there aren't a ton of people who have your "classic" New Yawk accent. It's only in some patches of Brooklyn and in those who wanna seem like tough guys. Though, we can curse up a storm in varying languages haha.

    Misconception: We're all rude.

Truth: Fast paced, yes; rude, not necessarily. Everyone I know is polite, says please and thank you, and holds doors and such. Granted we don't do the ma'am and sir thing (except to cops), but we still show respect to others. It's more unexpected when someone is rude.

Misconception: We're full of crime and are some kind of hell hole full of urban warfare.

Truth: One of the safest huge cities in America. It's on some lists that I don't feel like looking up. We're either the safest or in the top 3. Truth of the matter is that some tourists get conned or pick pocketed and instantly think the city's out to get them. It's not true, but what is true, is that in proportion, there are more overall crimes in the city than in Peoria, but there are also about 10 million people here at any given time, so by increasing the number of overall people, you increase the number of bad people. Honestly though, I have no fears driving alone at night, or even walking around at 2am.

Misconception: If you move here from out of town (especially some small town), you'll become gay.

Truth: If you were gay in your small town, chances are it wasn't accepted and you hid it. Moving to a city that has a gay community would only help you to embrace yourself and thus be out there with it. But no, the water doesn't turn people gay or any dumb shit like that.

    Misconception: New Yorkers can't drive.

Truth: New Yorkers can't drive stick. It's too much of a pain in the ass, with all the stop and go. Anyways, this misconception applies to certain people, and they ruin it for the rest of us; women, Asians and old people. And the city has many of them. Cab drivers CAN drive, they're just batshit crazy, and weave in and out of traffic without looking. If you base it on pure skill, they're amazing drivers. If you base it on things like rules and regulations, not so much. Most people I know, are quite good drivers. Stay the hell out of Flushing and Chinatown though.

If anyone has any misconceptions or notions about a place, I think they should post those as well, at the risk of looking ignorant, haha. I promise I won't judge those who are way misguided about New York City... too harshly

Sweet... an exellent excuse to put off thw work I have to do... mwuahah

    ENGLAND

    Misconception
    - We all talk like the queen
    Truth
    - England has avast array of accents. Yes, there are those that are all like "One talks rather posh... guv'nor", and a british accent probably IS distinguishable from other countries, but English accents break into many distinguishable sub-categories. There's Geordie, which is basically Scottish but retarded; There's the Yorkshire accent, which is sort of like an attempt at Scottish but miserably failing; and moving down the map more, you've got brummie, which I can't describe... it's just Brummie; and West-country, down in the South-West of England, where everybody basically sounds like Hobbits. Also, London itself has many different accents within itself. The posh Queen-like accents can be found here (and also in posher parts of surrounding areas like Buckinghamshire), but also the cockney accent (Like people from Only Fools and horses, if you've seen ) and Chav, which is like a white person trying to talk like a gangsta from the streets of America.

    Misconception
    - We only eat scones and only drink tea
    Truth
    - The average person will have 1 or maybe 2 cups of tea a day, yes, but coffee is just as common, if not more so. It's the scones that's the bigger misconception, as you really don't see somebody eating one every day. English tea rooms sell them, and they're uber nice, but that's pretty much the only place people go to eat them. It's not like they're on menus at restaurants or we eat them for breakfast every day without fail.

    Misconception
    - We drive on the wrong side of the road
    Truth
    - Americans drive on the wrong side of the road. The Britons had roads before they invented America, and Americans are basically Britons who got all livid until they got given independence, so really Americans should be driving like us.

    Misconception
    - Our prime minister has an 'always suck up to the American president' policy
    Truth
    - You're right.

    Apple Valley, CA

Misconception: Everyone thinks we have apple trees.
Truth: THere are no apple trees, it's all desert and tumbleweeds.

Misconception: Everyone thinks it's always sunny here.
Truth: It just snowed two days ago .

Misconception: We ALL live next to the ocean.
Truth: There's a lot more to California than just the beach. It's all deserty and dry where I live. In some areas, it's all mountains and cold weather. Then there's the mid-lands where it's humid, but they don't live directly on the water. We have most climates here. >_<.

Misconception: Living in Hamptons(of Long Island) means you've seen a bazzillion celebraties.

Truth: No. You'd swear they travel with their secret service, because no matter how many live out here, you only see one every once in a blue moon. But there was that time were Adam Sandler entered a Riverhead Target. That was pretty cool. And one time Jennifer Lopez was filming a music video on the beach while we were fishing. THAT was cool.

    Cape Cod

    Misconception
-Everyone here loves to just hang out on the beach

    Truth
-This peninsula has alot of beaches yes, but there are plenty of older and younger people who just don't go. I myself haven't been to a beach on Cape Cod in over 4 years.

    Misconception
-Since the land is limited everyone here is rich!

    Truth
-Cape Cod has alot of differant people. The land even 10 years ago was much more affordable, and now due to the jacked land prices the middle and lower class people are getting shoved out of here due to cost of living while the wealthier older community is taking over.

    Misconception
-The scenery looks so beautiful here.

    Truth!
-No, it looks okay and if you vacation a couple weeks I can see how you'de like it. But aside from that only a few months aren't cold and grey. The beaches down by Florida are much prettier and I'd rather swim there anyday.

    New Zealand:

[b]We're full of sheep shaggers[b] - No this is just a carry on from the British colonists who said people in whales shag sheep. We have prostitues.

Isn't that an Australian state? - No, we're like 1/6th their population size yet we still kick their asses

Aren't we just a mini USA? - No we're more of a mini Canada.

Do hobbits really live there? - No just the maori natives and the British colonists (And no unlike Aussie we're not made up of convicts). Though it is kind of true if you go out in the country it does look like in LoTR.

New Zealand is a secret paradise and I when I get some money Im going to move down there! - Don't... I hear this often and NZ ain't as great as its made out to be. Our economy sucks, our internet is shit, the scenery doesn't seem like anything special and everybody who is not lazy moves over to Aussie for more money.

    Misconception: Incest is cool
    Truth: Only in anime, guys.

Really, though, in the capital area, we don't **** our cousins or makeout with siblings. We're actually pretty average and wholesome as far as that goes. It's the places outside of the capital you have to worry about...

Misconception: We all drive pickup trucks.
Truth: While there are a good number of trucks around town (more than you'd see up north, I mean), there are more small cars and SUVs than old trucks.

Misconception: We have no shoes and no teeth.
Truth: Shoes are required in public buildings and we have plenty of dentists and toothpaste available. Things can get weird up in the hills, though. I can't speak for those people.

Misconception: We're all racist and homophobic.
Truth: Not all of us. >.> Once again, it's better in the capital.

    Misconception: We eat squirrel.
    Truth: We have grocery stores.

Misconception: We're next to Maine (I've actually heard this one)
Truth: We're not next to Maine.
    Curious?

Ok well I live in Coominya which is in Australia.

Misconception: Coominya is a goat track and that's all.

Truth: No, Coominya is a town which seems to be growing a little. It's only a small country town but it has more to offer than that.

Misconception: Coominya gets plenty of rain.

Truth: No! We don't get much rain half of the time. It usually always misses us except when we're lucky.

Misconception: We're all hillbillies with no teeth and baggy old clothes.

Truth: Umm no, while some of the people here are like that, there are a fair few people here with a bit of class. Not everybody here is a country bumpkin. ^_^
