why do peole fear death?

I fear not just death but the act of dying, I do wonder whether even a peaceful death is painful and what it is like. I plan ahead in my life, I like to feel in control and in charge of everything I do, and this is what scares me most, that death can happen at any time, it's the complete opposite of what I do every day, it's unpredictable and that's the most scary thing about it.

Another thing I fear is death taking all my loved ones before me, that I will be a old lady all alone on the planet, that my youngest sister could die before me is very scary. For example my Aunt the youngest sibling out of six is dying of Cancer and there is nothing more the doctors can do. What a horrible way to die, to know you are dying and know you are leaving children behind who still need you, and to wonder what will happen to them when she goes.

However I do believe there an afterlife, I'm a Christian so I believe there is a God but I also believe in ghosts too, after hearing my dad tell some true ghost stories to me as a child of when he was on the building site, things that cannot be explained and things that he can't explain either I really do believe that souls can linger on the Earth before going to the otherside, energy afterall doesn't just disappear it has to go somewhere. So why do I still have that fear? I guess because it isn't put to me in black and white still, the bible can only answer so much it does not state what God's ultimate plan is or why he takes the young sometimes etc... There's still a bit of uncertainty and it is the unknown that I ultimately dread.

I'm with you on art of that I don't necessarily fear death, but the act of dying. I am curious about how it feels to die, but I won't know until it's time.

I believe that another reason why people fear death is because most people are comfortable with their lives and they don't want to leave anything that they are comfortable with, so it's another way of explaining the fear of the unknown theory. Even though life is rough many times, and death may make everything much easier, depending on what you believe in, you are used to living a natural life. So when the idea of leaving your natural life becomes a possibility, you have no idea what to expect. And then you fear all the pain that you are going to go through physically, the mental pain that your family is going to go through, and you begin to wonder if your life was well spent.
As a Catholic, I don't fear death so much as I fear death's unpredictability and the idea of dying in mortal sin and going to Hell. If my life is bad, I will eventually find death and I won't have to worry about my life anymore, but if I die and go to Hell, then there's nothing I can do about that.
Here's another aspect of this discussion that I often wonder about. It seems strange that death is something that we all just accept, but when the possibility of staring death in the face is evident, you avoid it like the plague. I know the reason is extremely obvious, but it seems weird that we will go so far as to talk about how we would like to die, but we always run away from the inevitable for as long as possible. Hope that made sense.

I don't know if I fear death, or what happens next ...
I guess I fear what happens after this life, I am only thirteen so death is not a big problem, I guess. But everyone thinks about it sometime, and how it would be like. I'm not that afraid, as I used to be, since I've heard a lot of
'near-death' experiences, even my principal has had one. And with people explaining their experience, it feels better, since they tell me you kinda see yourself lying on the ground and you are flying up ... Well, it's strange, but it comforts me that you just don't fall and die.

I think it has to do with people's fear of the unknown and what happens to us after our bodies die. For religious people such as myself we tend to believe that our spirits are ascended into either Heaven, Hell or a new life (reincarnation). On the other hand, some people believe that we just fade away into nothingness which is equally plausible.

I suppose that fear of not knowing a definitive truth about what happens after death is what keeps some of us up at night.

The reason I fear death isn't really death itself. It's the fear of death before I get a chance to do what I want in life, like meet that special girl, get married and start a family. I just want to live my life before I lose it.

At the moment, I fear love more then death. I've been through some things in my life. Some were a little ****ed up. I've come face to face with death a few times. The latest time was written in my journal. Other times they almost happen while driving. (Other occurrences I really don't want to talk about). That doesn't mean I don't fear death. It just happens to be a little less then the average person. My last near death experience, I wouldn't have felt anything. I was too ****ing drunk to even know what was going on. When I finally came to and realized what had happened, I was scared out of my skin. Anything could have happened. I'm scared of not knowing when my death will be. I would like to know and make immense with myself and others around me. I don't want to die angry or with regret. I want to be at peace.

I think, for the most part, people fear the unknown. And death's the biggest unknown ever. If we knew what would be waiting for us after death, then most people wouldn't fear it.

I admit, I fear death simply because I don't know what to expect, but I personally believe in a heaven and that we should live life to the fullest, make friends, spread love and happiness and have no regrets. Wether I'm right or wrong is another story but I'll live life by this code and not get to caught up on what's on the other side. I'm pretty sure God wouldn't want us to miss out on a fufilling life because we're to busy thinking about what's going to happen to us when we die.

1. It's our instinct to live. It's pretty strong in all animals. It's why people can get through the most horrid of situations, and not commit suicide.

2. Life is all we know. We don't wanna leave everything we have behind: the sense of self and the world around us, all of our loved ones, all of our possessions, dreams left unrealized, projects unfinished, etc. and leave when we aren't prepared, and that's very understandable.

There are other reasons that people fear death, but I believe these two to be the biggest ones.
