    Record of Lodoss Wars

Just curious, how many of you have seen this series... both the origional and the Chronicles of a Heroic knight series?

Personally, I think this is a great early style anime that any real fan should have in their collection, if not to honor the early 90's style anime

Part of the reason I am posting this is my sister has the opening credits theme song saved onto her computer and she was listening to it... which brought back the memories of when I first watched the Chronicles of a Heroic Knight series... we were on a 2 day car trip and I watched it from start to finish, so I heard that theme music a lot

    Thing is... its catchy

and you can see a lot of great classic anime in this series, and some great ties to Lord of the Rings.

All in all, good stuff if you ask me

I loved that series (the original only so far)! I've watched some eppies on dvd and some on youtube. I will almost always favor old hand-drawn anime to the computerized ones we see today. They just have a more.....stronger sense of visual eye candy? I don't know how to explain it. lolz

    But it was really good. And I agree...the music is just awesome. The ending theme is nice too. I need to get the box set. And then move on to the other ones of Lodoss. xDDD;;;

I've seen both the original OVA series and the newer Chronicles of the Heroic Knight series. I have to say that I noticed there were slightly different things in the TV series and the OVA series, but I didn't complain. It was still very good. And I did like the art style back then. I wish people would make newer anime like that even though it would take significantly longer to create. It'd be worth it, though.

And just so you know, finaldragoon, we here at TFF like posts with complete thought in them. I'm not asking for essays here, just complete your opinions with reasoning.

Man what a trip, mentioning those old openings made me look it up on Youtube. Those WERE some great songs.

Yeah Lodoss was a classic Anime, one of the first real Anime series I saw next to Blue Seed. I remember someone had the VHS Boxset and it was this HUGE rectangular box about 4 feet wide. It was like one epsiode per tape. I was amazed with the DVD format because I saw it as 2 Disc set, AMAZING!

I actually saw the TV series for the first time last year. Not nearly as great as the OVA. I couldn't stand the dub in that so I ended up watching it in Japanese.

I always made jokes back then that Link had to be Parn and Deedlit's son, and Nintendo HAD to have based OoT Ganon on King Beld, there's a HUGE resemblence there.

OIh and Deedlit was hot in those Closing Credits.

Man Cain, thanks for reminding me of the existance of youtube... get to rewatch all the good stuff again.

Personally, I would love to get up every day to listen to the opening credits of the TV series... that has to be by far my favorite, and now I can ^^

Because I WANT to watch more anime, but have no idea where to look, does anybody have any anime that is styled similar to ROLW in any way worth watching? Like... one of those "if you like this, try out these" ideas

Actually the creator of Lodoss made two spinoffs. Neither of which I've seen.

There's Legend of Crystania, which is a followup focusing on Ashram and Pirotess. I saw a trailer of it once, and this is probably your best bet if you like the artstyle and deep storytelling.

And there's Rune Soldier which I'll say again, IS done by the same creator and set in the same universe. But has more of a lighter comical tone, and more of a standard Anime style, and overall seems more akin to Slayers.

Can't really think of any other Anime being similar to Lodoss though. The only thing that really comes to mind is Slayers, but again, that's more light hearted comedy, not really dark, epic Fantasy.

I think he meant similar styled, as in the animation style, not so much genre or anything like that.

And as far as that goes, I can't really say what is or isn't like that style. Because honestly you're missing out on some awesome anime with different styles.

I think you already know about Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. And perhaps even Captain Harlock. There's also "Those Who Hunt Elves", which I still have yet to see.

There's tons of anime out there.

Yeah I know, I just figured I'd mention those two official spinoffs. It's not just genre, but I just couldn't think of anything else similar in style to Lodoss.

And yeah, of course there's different Anime out there, but I'm not about to go "lik HAY 4get Lodoss check out theez AWWSUM Anime" I was merely answering his request for similar titles.

Also of note, there was was a Legend of Crystania movie AND an OVA (I want to say six episodes long, but I've only seen the movie--the OVA is significantly harder to track down on DVD).

But yeah, that being said, I love Lodoss War. The original OVA series was one of the first series I owned on DVD, and I'll still pop it in from time to time. It's also potentially on my "Top 10" list of anime, although it might have gotten pushed off of there with a few newer shows. Still, though, it's just an all-around solid series (and Slayn was totally my favourite ^^).

I also do have the Chronicles of the Heroic Knight TV series, which I also enjoyed, but not to the extent of the original. I didn't like the first half as much as the second, because the first was largely just re-telling the original but taking some liberties along the way (liberties I could have done without). But when the second half of the series came, it interested me more, as we got to see the original characters slightly more mature and we also got new heroes to boot (and the fact that Crispin Freeman played three of them in the dub made me very happy, as he's my favourite American VA and all three roles he played sound NOTHING alike).

Okay, I think I've ranted long enough to prove that I'm quite obsessed with the Lodoss War series, so with that I'll take my leave.

Yeah, I think the OVA diverged from the source material, which isn't strange considering how much they were trying to pack into 13 episodes. Chronicles of the Heroic Knight had a lot more time, so the story feels a lot fuller. Unfortunately, they skimmed past the Six Heroes stuff with Fahn/Beld/Karla.

The VHS boxset is a hefty 9 tapes, a lot heavier compared to the 4-DVD boxset. I remember buying this when I was about 9...I was mostly into Dragon Ball Z back then, haha. It planted a seed of D&D within me. Such great music too. Next to the openings and endings, I remember the Berserker Orson music clearly.

Meier, where is your avatar from? Is that Vampire Hunter D? =O
