    Akira

I wasnt sure wether or not to put this in movies or Anime...but its an anime movie.

I first watched Akira back when i was like 9 or somthing and i loved it.
My favorite charecter was Tetsuo. Watching his power take over and watching him go insane was funny to me.

Akira is one of my favorites too. I need to get it on DVD. I still have my old copy on VHS that I got form Animenation. I got the manga a few weeks ago and after the first few books it goes into another story with the same characters. Great read!

Really there is a sort of sequel?

I know the end of Akira hinted a sequel but i never would have thought there is a continuation. Thats Awsome.

The movie really isn't an exact copy of the manga, itself really. It doesn't take anything away from the greatness that is the film, but it's really more of an adaptation...There's simply too much going on in the manga to be properly translated to one movie. Read the manga, it's just as (if not better) than the movie.

    TETSUOOOOO~!!!

    KENEDAAAAAA~!!!

They have a special edition hardcover of the first Akira manga. The rest of the volumes can be hard to find at just a book store. I had to order mine from a few places. It's a great read and it really adds a lot to the story.

It's kind of funny how the drug of choice in the movie is now currently one of the most abused drug on the market, meaning pills. Still waiting for the pill bar!

But anyways H.U.N.K I was a few years older then you when I found this title but seeing I am older then you, I think you might of been barely out of diapers haha.

This is one of my favorite animes of all time, the story is epic, the animation was revolutionary for its time. I loved Akira as a whole, but I would recommend sticking to the VHS unless you can find a direct rerelease to DVD, the copy of the DVD that I have has reedited alot of the dialog and made the story to simplistic. plus they rook out one of my favorite lines (actually 2)

Meier, what were your favorite lines from the movie? Good to know there are older fans on this site. Got you beat by 3 years...

Dang it haha. I was wondering earlier how old you where, guess that sums it up. They are pretty cheezy but for one in the part where the police are gasing the mob I loved it in the original dub when it zoomed in on one of the officers shooting one of the rioters (still there) and right before he shoot him he said one of the funniest one word one liners "scumbag" I loved how it was said and what it added to the scene, but yet in the rerelease the eliminated the word all together, kind of disappointing. The other was the really bad dubbed Kenada conversation after Tetsuo escapes and is recaptured, in which Kenada asks "what are you his exicutioner". Bad dub meaning the words didn't match his mouth, but most of the words where altered in the rerelease to DVD. It added to the feel of the scene and the panic of the unknown of what was truely going on.

Glad I still have the old VHS copy. I got it my first year in college. I think I watched that movie at least once a week for years. I can't believe they cut that line in the DVD. Only problem with having the VHS is my VCR broke a few months ago.

Yeah I'm going to be 29 soon, and it's freaking me out.

Yeah my favorite part was during the chase with the clowns when one of them crashes and Tetsuo runs up and smacks him with the sledge hammer...but then crashes.

Dang forgot about this convo.... But yeah H.U.N.K. that was a great scene in the movie and a nice turning point for the plot. There where alot of great clips in this movie, The Coach was and still is extreamly funny in this movie. I just wish they would of went more into the back story of Akira, and explained more of what unfolded in the events that led to Akira's demize.

Akira was actually my first (and our family's first) DVD purchase once we got our first DVD player in 2000 (happened to be the PS2 that still sits beside my first BLu-Ray Player, aka my PS3.. that was Robotech: Shadow Chronicles as the first blu-ray movie though). THe best investment i ever made..

Ok maybe not, but it was worth it

Oh yeah I compleatly forgot about the coach. That was for me the funniest thing I had ever seen. I think they should have told more about the backround story for Akira beacuse I was lost around the end of the movie.

    Alright...
I have never had the privledge to watch Akira. Seeing as this was an older anime, I have to admit it is probably due to my birth year. Being born in 1991, I have missed a lot.

Do you have any ideas where I can pick up a copy? Amazon.com? Ebay?

Search as I my I can not find the Manga verion of Akira and it bugs me...

Yeah, Wally-World is the number 1 stop&shop around here, too.
I hate the place, but it's the only decent department store around.

Word of advice, do not go to Wall-Mart at 3 am on a Saturday morning. Dead Time {3 am} on Saturdays means one thing= Store Seizures. I went one early morning {was bored}, and I seen the wierdest, wrongest, wildest, dirtiest, craziest, dumbest, loudest and most drunk people I have met in my LIFE. It was like watching a Redneck Twilight Zone for Dummies.

Bah, I need to buy the movie! But I do watch it every time it's on TV. Which really isn't that much anymore. But still.
The manga is defiantly awesome. I have the first two but the third is IMPOSSIBLE to get. There are only so many in the world and they go for a lot of money, which I just don't have! But Akira is still one of the best movies/manga ever.
I like it when Keneda crashes the bike so his friend that Tetsuo killed could have it in the afterlife. That was a cool thing to do.
Any of you seen the earlier version of Akira with the bad voice acting? It's really funny how they screw up the pronunciation!

This INCREDIBLE banner was made by Kilala, thank you so much for making it for me!

No I dont belive I have seen the eariler version, beacuse the voice acting on mine is fine.

Not to be a total douche but he did not crash the bike for tetsuo it was for (Sorry to anyone offended by my spelling) Yamgata.....not sure on how you spell it but he wheres a shirt that has the rising sun on it.

I have a remastered version so I guess they fixed the voice problems.

The bad-voice acting version is real funny! They pronounce Keneda's name differently and stuff! I'll see if I can find it!

Actually if you are talking about the original US release of Akira then yes I have, and I still own the original VHS for that dubbing too. In all actuality I like the original better then the remastered. It made you think alot more then just having everything spelled out for you in the remastered version. The feel that I got from the movie was that it was made to make you think and I loved the earlier rendidtion of the transcript.

I remember liking the newer dub because the voice actors were just better...but I only watched it with the new dub once and hadn't seen the old dub in a while...I only really even watched the new dub at all just to see how different it was (Kaneda is a ninja turtle! lol). subs>dubs

I liked Leonardo as Kaneda better than Ichigo as Kaneda, personally. He had one of my favorite lines from the older dub: "Yer bike's still burnin' man!" Leonardo did an overall better job of making Kaneda a punk, in my opinion. The other voice actors were probably better, though.

Yeah, though; I remember back in the day, this and Heavy Metal were those two awesome cartoon movies I caught little pieces of when my older brothers would watch them. I didn't get to actually watch Akira until I was like 12, in '96. ...a little over 12 years ago. Heh. Wow... That was half my lifetime ago. But yeah, this was an awesome anime. I loved the cyber punk thing. And the soundtrack was pretty eclectic and interesting, too.

There was this short movie I saw by the same director (I think it was a part of a collection) where this guy is sent to oversee the construction of something or another, and it's being constructed by these robots. The guy goes insane... it's pretty awesome. Anyhoo...

Oh yeah, the soundtrack was one of the very first CDs I ever bought. It's still to this day one of the best CDs I own. Pretty effing epic.

Ah Akira, still the king of Manga. I remember my friends stayed over in my house in the early 90's and we done a manga rally of Akira, Fist of the north star and 3x3 eyes. Good times !

I heard hollywood are making a movie of Akira in the future, and heard Leo Di Caprio is gonna be in it as hes a big fan of the movie.

Hope they dont make a balls of it and give it to that disgrace Michael Bay, he has already ruined my fav cartoon franchise of all time

1.) Leo Di Cap. Is going to be one of the directors of the movie. Not sure about him starring in it, though knowing him, I wouldn't doubt it.

2.) How in the f-ck did Michael Bay ruin Transformers? I thought that movie was epic. You want to see ruined transformers? Watch Cartoon Network. You will cry, I almost did.

Yeah, I thought I should throw in. Akira is awesome, and has quite the cult following, I just hope it doesn't end up as another tragic Manga/Anime to Live Action. They always seem to turn out... bad, real bad. Especially in the hands of Americans.

Humm where to start, well to keep it short and not soo off topic. The only thing the movie kept true was the names of the transformers, thats it. They turned optimus prime into a *****, they set it in modern day when its obviously ment to be in the future, they changed it so the transformers can turn into anything which is just gay and the addition of the army guys in it made me sick, and i wont even start on the lame product placement. I hope Michael Bay gets cancer and it consumes his whole body and makes his face explode in the most horrific and painful way imaginable.

Oh no it turned into a minature rant

Anyway i happen to like Leo Di Caprio and trust he will do good things for this adaption, i just hope we won't be waiting too long

Not sure how they will pull it off though without having 80% of it in CGI.
