Listen to the Music Part II: A real "Electrical Boogaloo"

So, we had a thread like this a couple of years ago, and for the couple of pages it lasted, it was pretty fun. And, since nobody seems to post in Music anymore, I figured, why not try it again?

How it Works

Basically, I'll post a song I like and a bit of information about the band/artist the song is by. The next person listens to it, and gives an honest opinion. Then they post a song. Etcetera. Etcetera. Etcetera. It's really not that hard, guys. So, uh, let's get started.

Karp-Bacon Industry.

Basically, Karp (short for Kill All Redneck Pricks) was the best thing to ever come out of Tumwater, Washington. Their style tended to change by the album, but if I had to give them a label, it'd probably be along the lines of stoner-hardcore-punk-thrash metal. Karp were heavy, aggressive, loud, in your face, but at the same time, with a pretty good sense of humor. Karp are easily in my top 5 favorite bands of all time, if not up in the top 2 or 3.

[Taco-Calamitous]

It's very angry yelly. Also pretty messy. I often like traits like that, although this is almost too messy for my tastes. Can't understand what he's saying really at all. Also maybe a little too repetitive, and lasts longer than it should. I kinda like it. Might look up other stuff by that band. Song might grow on me if I listened to it more.

The Suicide Machines - No Face

The Suicide Machines were a hardcore ska-punk band. I believe they are now broken up. I didn't really know a lot about them, except that their last album was way more hardcore punk than ska, which kind of disappointed me, because I was expecting more like this song. That last album was very political in tone in their lyrics, as punk bands tend to do. No specific reason for posting them; this song was just the first thing that popped into my head. Anyhoo...

Ska + Punk. Can't go wrong with that winning formula can you? I love that bass line too, but can't really tell if it owes more debt to ska or to pop-punk.



This be the Halo Benders. The first thing you will be struck by is the contrast between the two vocalists. I've heard that they write lyrics independently, and clearly this only works because their voices almost exist in different dimensions. Very interesting combination. One half is Doug Martcsh (of Built to Spill), and the baritone is Calvin Johnson (Beat Happenings, who I haven't actually listened to yet), and I think most consider it a side project of Doug's. The song is intentionally a bit silly, but I really like it.

I got into it from Built To Spill, which I chanced across in an independent music store once, and have been hooked since.

I thoroughly enjoyed that, Alpha. The bass and drums are what made that song seem perfect to me. I can't really think of any criticisms, except that maybe the sound effects when they get to the chorus. I hate sound effects in songs.

I can't really point a finger at a particular band for this version of Scarified.

It's composed of a "dream team," of famous musicians, and you can definitely hear each of their respective styles come together and actually blend pretty well. The jam members are (copied out of description, each with their original bands next to them) Paul Gilbert - Guitars (Mr Big, PintSize), Bruce Bouillet - Guitars, John(Juan) Alderete - Bass (Mars Volta), Scott Travis - Drums (Judas Priest).
If you don't know who Paul Gilbert is, he's essentially a classical-rooted guitar god, and he acts like a total dork when performing, which I absolutely love.

I think those guys sound like skilled musicians. However, that song feels a little show-offy for my tastes. I like my guitar parts simple and catchy. So it's kinda cool, but it didn't really stand out to me.

Apollo Sunshine - We Are Born When We Die

I don't know anything about this artist (or these artists?) but this song just haunts me, especially the beginning, with those shrill violins, I think they are. This was in a scene of season 4 of Breaking Bad, and it fit that scene so well. Watched that episode again Saturday, and was laying in bed with this song in my head, and then the next day for a little while. Anyhoo...
