    Discovering New Music

How do all you like to discover new music? From friends? From suggestions that various music sites make for you? From your local radio stations/Satellite Radio? Experiencing new artists for yourself? MAGIC?

I like to check out what my friends listen to, and get suggestions from them. I like hearing their personal opinion of the music they suggest, and then trying it out for myself to see if I like it as well as they do. I also frequently check the "What Are You Listening To?" thread here on TFF quite a bit. It's a good way to get an eclectic mix of music in one place. ^^

    Re: Discovering New Music

My eldest bro introduced me to a lot of the bands I listen to today. Like, throughout my life. He has been the biggest influence on me. Not as much anymore, but I still hear stuff from him that I like lots of times. (Most recently the Avett Brothers.) I also have a subscription to emusic, and I check out the stuff that has come out that month or year, mostly in the punk section. Also, I have bands that I've followed for years, and I look around the internets to see if they got anything new coming out. Following them on facebook also helps.

And occasionally, I also like something someone else introduces to me. Though not often, because then I can't say I heard it first! Gotta keep my music snob credibility up after all, eh? (Actually, there've been a few bands I've discovered through fellow TFFers over the years: Say Anything, Nightwish, and Dream Theater come to mind.) Anyhoo...

    Re: Discovering New Music

I tend to get interested in new music through hearing it or learning about it through other mediums. It would have been unlikely that I would have developed a love for Heavy Metal if I had not played GTA: Vice City or an interest in Japanese Punk if I hadnt read the Crows/Worst manga.

I tend to ignore other peoples recommendations in music as the majority of peoples tastes in music generally suck. Not that they do actually suck but as they say, each to their own.

Alot of the music I listen to I discover by Last FM. It is very awesome. You type in an artist you like, then it plays random songs by that artist, and artist similar to them.

Another way is hotnewhiphop find all the latest shit in hiphop from there.

    Re: Discovering New Music

theres a few different avenues I've used for finding new music. Back when we moved into our new house and got satillite for the first time ever, I would check out the sirius radio music channels and find hear new stuff from there. This was back before high speed internet and/or youtube, so it was kinda fresh like that, but omg this is like the 2nd thread I'm going through nostalgia wtf. silly 4am lurkan.

ANYWAY, the next method was (believe it or not), MYSPACE. Like for example, back in high school, I just heard of and found out about Daft Punk (like this was when Human After All JUST released), I went on my sweet punkass myspace and found them on there. It was cool because I could listen to not only their music, but on the DP top friend's page, it was other similar artists that I could click on and also listen to. For this reason I grew into becoming a big fan of the French Electronic music scene, because I heard all about their different hits and sounds and people looked at me like I was a sexy mofo because I knew about "musique".

After that, just talking with other people that have the same passion about music, its kinda nice to talk about different artists or learn new things about it. Either in person or online via messenger/forums, thats like the most recent and common way I've used to learn about new music.

Quite often I stumble onto something I like, be it while watching TV or accidentally hearing it on radio, even here on TFF. I rarely take recommendations, only people I take upon recommendations are those who know very well my taste in music.

I tend to look up amv's people have made on youtube for my favourite games, sows and movies. I have found two of my favourite bands that way. I also sometimes find stuff I like though t.v and occasionally the radio. Or there is the rare times that I take recommendations from my friends . . . though normally I end up hating what they have recommended . . .

One way I discovered new music and types was during travels of sorts. I've wondered about new prog going in Europe and further west. I also have to check certain resources through types tacked onto artists. As in I check something I've heard and turn around to research related music and sometimes the production involved. That's just interesting to me. For an example, the production process in Russia and Japan sounds different, which is going into mixing and mastering styles and not just equipment differences.

I used to surf through satelite stations because of how varied the music selection was. It was free at the time because it was connected through a former work's computer. The easiest now would be surfing who comes with what performance on a show or shows up talking about their album on Chelsea Lately. Magic.

    MAGIC!!! =D
Just kidding. I deleted my account on last.fm a while ago, but I found a few bands there. I haven't listened to all of them, but at least I FOUND them! XD

Most bands I listen to were recommended to me by my brother. ("Recommend" means "he forced me to listen to everything he likes") He still writes e-mails and tells me when he found some new, good bands. But I don't listen to everything anymore. (Especially as I was still stuck in the 90's a week ago o_o")

Other than my brother, my boyfriend had a great influence on me in the past few months. He bought a car and when he then takes me with him, I have to listen to the music in his car. ^^" So I listened to pretty much that my boyfriend likes (or even loves). I only listen to ONE of all these bands he likes now, but well... I don't like Metalcore and Hardcore. ^^""

Also, I once got a CD from a former friend - I didn't know the band, but after listening to the CD, I was a fan of the band. XD
When I was younger, I also liked to listen to the CDs in magazines. I found about 2-3 bands this way. :>

But, I must admit, I don't search for new bands anymore. There's hardly 5 new bands for me each year. ^^"

Actually I get most of my stuff from youtube. I'm susbscribed to a few labels I know bands from, so I see new vids from new bands there. I've got most of my musically inclined friends added on youtube, so I see the stuff they're favoriting and such, usually things I like. Recommended for you based on things I watch also sometimes gives me new bands I end up liking, then of course the related vids on the side of anything I'm watching. Other than that, just recommendations from friends and family.

    Re: Discovering New Music

I sample cds of artists I have not listened to in FYE or such when I'm out & about. Then check them out more on youtube to see if I really like them. Other times I just browse wiki for bands and look them up on youtube. This mostly applies to Power/Symphonic Metal bands. Though I'm trying to find bands similar to Ensiferum as they are able to pull off the harsh screaming/death growls so they are coherent, at least to my ears.

For hip/hop I listen to my friend's new cds that he wants me to hear. We tend to let the other listen to any new material we bought/got. Like later today we're going to listen to the new Bad Meets Evil EP. I also listen to his actual material and am waiting for his first mix-tape but he's procrastinating. Vocally he sounds like LL Cool J though you wouldn't think he would sound like that when talking to him.

    Discovering New Music

Sometimes I stumble upon a song without even realizing it but for the most part I get my music from listening to songs in movies and tv shows, and on very rare occasions social media. Other sources; Jango, AccuRadio, YouTube, iTunes, and most recently Twitter #music

Like Tele my main genre of music was founded by my older brother who used to listen to a lot of 80's and 90's rap and hip hop and my stepfather who was my hard rock and alternative rock side of things (which then lead me to my fav genre heavy metal), today my main genre is dubstep and chillstep, and sometimes a bit of DnB and I find a lot of new artists and songs on various youtube channels my favourite being Pandora music.

Also as I start to follow the artists I like then generally they put up other budding artisits that they like for there fans to have a listen to etc etc. Also FB some people post music videos that I have a quick listen to. Friends can be very influential.
By they way have you ever heard of Lindsey Sterling she is a brilliant violinists that plays in accompaniment to dubstep and DnB you should check her out

Eh... Japanese Pop I stumbled upon when I was reading an issue of PSM and Banzai had a little snippet about Suzuki Ami in there. I think INFINITY 18 vol. 1 had just come out. And I was like "!!! THere's -music- in other countries!?" .. So. I dragged my sister to Tower Records in downtown Nashville, lucked out, found said cd, along with Joey Yung (C-Pop. Yep.). And have been hooked ever since. This girl Tori I used to be friends with got me into Dir en Grey and the awesomeness that is J-Rock. I was already listening to some rap - Tupac, Biggie, No Limit (Make 'Em Say Uhhhhhh), and whatnot, but then my ex in Phoenix introduced me to -some- Ranchero (read: Chalino Sanchez), South Park Mexican, & Brotha Lynch. Reggaeton I found on my own, but that's about all they play in Phoenix, so yeah. And from then on I just kinda get into whatever. Used to listen to 80's rock with my big brother, Hank Jr. with my parents (Family Traditions was my lullaby. True Story. lol).. And yeah.

Sirius radio and Pandora. I'm always finding cool stuff.

I'm also a huge fan of using shazam on my phone to find songs from tv and commercials that I like, then I'll look up other songs by the artist. It's pretty glorious

i dont really come across much new i like anymore, i mean, theres plenty of new stuff i like, but not much i will go stupif over like i did with Muse or James or U2, I recently got back from a James gig. TOP!!! I love that they were founded the year of my birth

The music i do like, or at least, getting me into the genre i like, my friends past and present got me into. though my mum and dad probably played a part. my mum doesnt really listen to music, but the limited music she has had, ive liked. i mean, she liked the doors and U2 way back when. she becomes cooler than me by proxy (Which kills me) as she was into the door before he died and right at the time U2 took off

YouTube, soundcloud, Pandora, and friends. I'll go in order of least useful to most useful for me anyways.

Soundcloud would be the least useful, unless you are following artist that like to share others music you won't be finding many new artist. It does have an explore option, but I haven't found it to be that great.

Friends - A good number of my friends have been a music hunter at some point in there life. The other half of my friends are still using things like Frostwire haha. Anyways, we always stumble upon some good music here and there, though our musical tastes have grown more and more separate over the years.

YouTube - I follow just some general uploaders who upload a variety of music. For example Mr.SuicideSheep who uploads a lot of chill electronic music, but also varies throwing up some electro, dubstep, etc every once in awhile. Sheepy uploads anywhere from up and coming artists to already big names to already retired artists. You can find a good number of uploaders like that on youtube for a lot of genres.

Pandora takes the cake though. Back in the day I remember Pandora was useless to me. I start out listening to metal and the next thing I know I'm listening to Green Day. They have gotten a lot better though. I find new artists almost daily for whatever I'm looking for.

I generally discover new music through TV, internet(new music that is displayed on sites I go on like youtube, etc...) and when I just generally go and find music on my own by searching through google. I literally just look up certain genres that I like, and try to find new songs I never heard of that might actually be awesome. Then I ask myself, "Why have I not heard of this song before?" or "Why is this not being advertised?" Hehe

As shameful as it is to admit, I've found that Glee has introduced me to quite a few new songs/artists. My girlfriend loves the show so it's either on tv or playing in the car all the time, and occasionally a song will pop up that I happen to like the sound of. If I can still be bothered to i'll Google or Youtube the name of the song later on and viola, I'll get the original version and artist.

I can't think of any specific examples, other than being re-introduced to 'Fat Bottomed Girls' by Queen.
