Disney's Masterpieces

When I was a little girl, I didn't notice any of the things in what was said about the princesses up above. I was mainly concerned with the colors, and I thought the princess were pretty. Since I didn't understand what sex was at the time, the whole "oh, the princess saves everything with sex!" thing.. I never caught on to that. People have relationships irl..kids know that much.

As a kid, I always just saw it as a prince rescueing his girlfriend. And if that's so bad, then I don't recommend letting your kid play Mario, either. I also have a lot of things I can say in defense as to what was said about Belle, too.

My Rant, lol:

Belle- Beauty and the Beast wasn't about sex. It was about Belle seeing past the Beast's hideous features and loving him for who he is as a person. The sexual pig was Gaston, who was overloaded with testosterone and never failed to flaunt himself to the townspeople. He wanted to force Belle into marriage. Did Belle fall in love with Gaston? Fack no. So that leaves us with a girl who is NOT gullible and takes shit from no-one. She didn't even like Beast at first because he was so cruel. She only warmed up to him after she saw past his ugliness and saw that there was potential.

Beauty and the Beast has one of the best messages out of all the Disney movies(Aside from Peter Pan, wanting to stay young forever, but you have to grow up eventually). And that message is to not judge a book by its cover. Love them for who they are as a person. Oh. And Belle married the beast because SHE LOVED HIM. The beast would die if he did not learn how to love again and be a kinder person. Maybe that's what you're bothered about, but as a kid, I was more impressed with the petals when they fell from the rose.

All in all, Belle was not helpless. She was an intellect and she fought tooth and claw to get out of Gaston's clutches. She charged into the castle, ready to rescue her man, but he was already dying when she got there. She did not save him with her sexuality. The curse was broken because the Beast finally understood what love and friendship was again thanks to Belle.. and that's what the curse required in order to break. So yeah. It wasn't just Belle, it was also himself.

I just fail to see why Beauty and the Beast isn't suitable.. nor do I see where Belle being helpless comes in, other than the part with the wolves((I wouldn't expect a girl to be able to handle a pack of wolves by herself.. it'd lose all credibility. So why NOT have her be rescued by the Beast? It also allowed her to see his good side. That's the part where I went "awww the Beast is a cute puppy" when I was little.))

I'm not telling you what to do with your kids, but I wouldn't look too deeply into the classic Disney movies. Kids don't catch on to the things we do unless they're blatantly obvious.

I love Disneys. I think they show humanity in a positive light. Beauty and the beast- A persons ability to look beyond the physical and fall in love, only to be blessed with what they always wanted. Aladdin- If you strive for it, and want something enough, you'll get what you want most just by being yourself (without using a magic lamp. :P). Pocahontas- Accept people for what they are and not based what you are. This one particularly has a message of acceptance (probably not down to Disney himself, to be fair lol).

I've spent almost my entire life with Disneys. They haven't made me into a helpless, shadow of a woman obsessed with the very idea of sex. In fact they had no effect on my life what-so-ever other than hours and hours of enjoyment.

The best thing about Disney, for me, is the fact that they can be watched and re-watched. I could stick on a Disney film now that I've been watching since I was tiny and I'd be happy. There are no guns involved, no obscenely complicated plot that you either love or hate. They are what they are and they don't try to be anything else. People look too far into things.

Its true, not all young children do. However, I have friends who DID catch on to the messages. The ones who were fat, considered ugly, teased, etc. When they watched the Disney movies (I don't think the term "Disney Princess" was coined back then) the message THEY got was that if they weren't thin and pretty then of course no man is going to want them.

I don't really care if someone agrees with me or not, to be honest. :p I do like reading people's responses though. Clearly some people have some serious emotional attachment to Disney Movies! :lol:

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite Disney film of all time.

I was picked on a lot when I was little too, I was never one of the popular kids or one of the normal kids. I didn't let that pull me down when I went home though.. going home from school was almost like leaving prison, lol.

I get what you mean with how a kid would feel bad about not being pretty like the princesses. But there's other good Disney movies that don't involve the princesses too.. like Lilo and Stitch .. Treasure Planet.. Fox and the Hound..those are my other favorite Disney ones. I remember when I was little, I'd cry at the scene when the old dog got hurt. ;(

Fox and the Hound still makes me upset to this day. Ditto for Bambi. I cried whenever I watched those when I was a kid.

Not all kids see a perfect character and go sulk because they're not perfect. In fact seeing nearly perfect characters often inspired me to work harder as a kid. I grew up on Disney classics, and I've bought almost all of the rereleases on Blu-Ray. I mainly wanted to get those for my sister, I won't have her growing up on the crap cartoons around now; but that's not to say I won't go kick back and watch Hercules or Lion King or something for my own entertainment. A good movie's a good movie, to hell with my age <.<

I think Beauty and the Beast shouldn't be shown to young children as it might encourage bestiality. Just because your pet dog has a good heart doesn't mean you should romance it and I highly doubt it loving you will turn it into some dude in need of a haircut.

Yeah. And don't you like Lion King? It's my favourite.. I think it teach us a good lesson too..

Oh yes! Lion King. I also forgot to put in Bambi. The part where Mufasa dies in LK never fails to make me feel sad. I always dread that scene when I know it's approaching in the movie. Lol.

Thing is, do you think Bambi's mother would have ever made Bambi if the father didn't think she was attractive, or visa versa depending on how deer work?

The point I'm trying to make, is attractiveness is a huge part of life.Your kids are going to be introduced to the real world someday, are you going to completely hide it from them and then one day when they come how from school crying let them know what it's really like? I'm not telling you how to parent, Tiff, as you're probably a wonderful mother (<3), I'm just curious as to how a parent goes about decisions like these.

You don't think the "Disney Princesses" picture went a little bit on the exaggeration side at all?

Its not something that I can overly explain, because I had the exact same mentality about it as you did before I had Claire. :) I'd roll my eyes when friends of mine wouldn't let their kids play with Barbies, etc... like really, its a doll! No harm done, right? :p

But then I had my daughter and I dunno, things changed. At the risk of getting all emo and sappy about it the bottom line (for me! not for others and I don't judge anyone who lets their children watch the Disney Princess movies) is that she's too important to me.

There's lots of other things that we do as parents, where others don't. We use cloth diapers as I don't like the impact of disposables on the environment. We're huge into attachment parenting, I "wore" Claire for the majority of her infancy (slings, baby carriers instead of strollers), the list goes on and on.

I dunno. I hate it when people give the "Oh but I can't explain it!!!" line because I personally didn't believe it. In my mind, there was always a reason! But here I am saying it because I really can't explain it. Its just something that changed in me when I became a mother.

That's true of more than just movies. Never underestimate the power of stupidity. If we removed everything that some moron could take seriously and be stupid with, we wouldn't have any entertainment left.

I know I'm really late, but...

I love Disney movies, although to be honest, the most popular ones generally are not actually my favorites. My favorites are the ones like The Great Mouse Detective (has one of the most awesome themes ever) The Rescuers Down Under, Robin Hood, The Black Cauldron, Atlantis... and the Lion King, Lilo and Stitch and the Fox and the Hound. The Emperor's New Groove was pretty good, too, although I remember when it came out that I thought it looked stupid. Interesting how perceptions on things change as you get older. Also, an appreciation for Patrick Warburton that'd developed over the years since obviously helped, too. But yeah; generally my favorites are the ones with talking animals as the main characters, I've found... DAMN FURRY!!

I did like those Disney Princess movies, though. Anyhoo...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame was one of my disney favorites, i like all the epic music.

I like disney but not the acting ones (maybe pirates of the caribbean, but the shows on disney channel are disturbing).
My favorites that i can still watch are Aladdin,Goofy,Duck Tales, Little Mermaid, Lion King etc.
When i was little i liked Sleeping Beauty,Fox and the Hound and many others.
But alot of them i don't like though..

Pixar is something that owns Disney completely since it came out first.
I like that more, they simply have more entertaining movies.

Toy Story was 1995, so if that was your reasoning that makes even less sense. Less still when you consider that Toy Story was Disney/Pixar. The first Disney/Pixar if I'm not mistaken. And Disney owns Pixar not only in a figurative sense, but in a literal sense. Disney bought Pixar back in 2006.

It's cool, we all love Toy Story. Toy Story imo is still the best pixar film.

Totally, definetly one of the best movies ever :D

I love Toy Story, it's about one of the only disneys that has decent sequels. I saw the first at the cinema as a kid, and saw the 3rd recently with a mate and my kid. Aw the nostalgia xD

And all the adults cried, myself included, the kids were all bleedin' fine

I generally prefer the older Disney, though, I think Bambi and Snow White I watched to death because my brother had them on VHS as a kid so I havent watched them for years... its like going off food that you have too much of ]:

Anyway, Beauty and the Beasy, Little Mermaid, Cinderella (love the cat) Lion King, Peter Pan. etc etc, aw I love them all (y)

Not so much the sequels mind. Not into that shit

Some of the sequels were alright, but almost all simply failed to replicate the majesty of the original. One I can say did well as a series was Aladdin. Though the first was definitely the best, I still loved Return of Jafar and King of Thieves. Hell, i watched RoJ so many times, my VCR ruined the tape <.< AH well, DVD re-releases ftw.

Oh, I liked that one too, can't say I've seen anything after it though

There's like 5 Little Mermaids and Cinderellas as well, and it's like...nah, don't think I'll ever bother with those

Little Mermaid 2 was actually decent and Aladdin 3 was awesome.
Aladdin 2 was a bad sequel in my opinion, simply because the other 2 are a lot better.
The second one had a stupid storyline, only about Iago's trustworthiness and i felt it was the only childish movie of the three, and also the most evil one, like Jafar was way to sinister considering it's a childish movie for kids, so that's why i don't like it :P
Abu and Jasmine are my favorite characters.

Speaking of the Disney sequels, I kind of liked the third Cinderella, tbh. Pretty interesting premise of how the Stepmother gets a hold of the Fairy Godmother's wand and just messes up everything that happened in the first film.

Can't say I particularly enjoyed many others, especially not the ones that were a straight to video/DVD release.

I was really surprised with Toy Story 3. I went to see it with two friends, and i have to say it was really good. I won't say it's better than Toy Story, but i will say it's better than Toy Story 2.
