I still have to play Final Fantasy XIII-2. :I
Julien Merceron, Square Enix's worldwide technology director, answered questions in an interview about the progress of Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy. Considering the large interest in knowing when Versus XIII is coming and when SE will release more news about the game, it remains the hot topic in many interviews.
Julien was able to give a little more than tease, as Nomura has been doing for most of the year as well. He said that the FF Versus XIII is a very ambitious game that has made it very complex for them to bring the game to fruition. In the last trailer seen of Versus XIII, they already showed the game developed to a deep level. So it is uncertain if the answer means that they have gone back on some of the things that they have created. Previous interviews about the game, said it would have fewer cutscenes with the action happening in real time, which maybe a reason for the complexity. As Square has the habit of leaving complex scenes to CG movies or scenes where the player has no control. Allowing the player control while these events occur would be something new for them and no doubt change how they design the game.
He also says that fans will be glad that they waited when the new information has been released. But still no certainty on when said information will be announced. For a game in development for most of the current generation, it is going to be a hard one to meet such high expectations.
On the subject of Lightning Returns, the game is deep in development from the way Julien spoke, but they are also using focus testing help with the direction of the game.
An additional note, those interest in Agni's Philosophy, Square Enix's new engine they showed off this year. There maybe more to see of it next year around June he said. It is going to be for more than PC, but show on something different than what it currently available. Likely this is an implication of future consoles.
