Does anyone else find the map frustrating?

Tho the map may get confusing for those who can't remember spaces well, I wish I had one in the giruvegan crystal, not the first half, when I went to find the excalibur blade. I fought ultima by accident and ran into a giant treasure chest(omega) before I meant to. I was wondering why everything kept getting dark and the monsters weren't weaklings.
