The Lost Art of Final Fantasy IX

So instead of going to bed like I need to be doing, I've been searching on google. The usual crap, but today I stumbled upon thee!

The lost art of Final Fantasy IX (Mama Robotnik Research Thread) - NeoGAF

If you're an avid IX guru I highly recommend you read through the whole thread. You won't be disappointed!

Now to make this into a topic...

After reading through the thread many thoughts and emotions flowed through my being. The what if's!? What could, or what will!? I'm sure I don't have to go into great detail for most of you to know what I want... So let me ask, what did this provoke in you!? What are you yearning for now!?

This stuff isn't even in The Sky for the FFIX part. These are really good. Thank you.

Edit: I like how the thread poster talks about the graphical changes in this game. FFIX pushed the PS1 to it's limits I feel and looking at this shows it.

Anytime loaf! She really pulled that one out of the woodworks. I've searched countless times for IX related content/news, and never have I once pulled that information up over the past 14 years.

Edit: yes the design of the game looks as if the graphics would have pushed the ps2 to its limits. It also makes me think: they new that it wouldn't be able to handle it, so why put so much effort into something that is just going to get scaled to a lower resolution. Well this is just my theory and a fan one at that, but it's as if they deliberately did so to have something to fall back onto later throughout the years. Without putting so much effort into the process next time. Who knows though, a nerd can dream!

The Lost Art of Final Fantasy IX

The lost art of Final Fantasy IX (Mama Robotnik Research Thread) - NeoGAF

This is pretty incredible. The artwork for FFIX was gorgeous before being downscaled into 32bit and still ended up being one of the best looking games on the Playstation.
In my research, I unearthed artwork that show a ludicrous level of detail went into the game – detail that never made it into the final product due to the limitations of the target format. The “lost art” referenced in the thread title isn’t meant to describe this content as having been lost and found – it refers to the art details that were lost when the graphics were downconverted to a limited 32-bit console.

The following pieces are the highly-detailed environment art from a selection of Square USA staff. The intense details were eventually downscaled to the 320x240 native resolution of the PlayStation to become pre-rendered in-game backgrounds. As you can seem much was lost:
These are just a few examples, there is a ton of images within the thread.

They wont ever do an HD Remake for this game I believe it just would take so much time and resources, they would making a brand new game practically from scratch.

I'd be happy with a Steam release, so it's actually available to those who can't play ps1 games.

I have to look into it again but there are specific reasons as they did not do a PC Port like they did with FFVII and FFVIII which then got the Steam release. It's sad and I wish they would do a Steam release with some achievements! Oh man I would do everything in that game, even try for the EXII which would no doubt be an ACHV

I just assumed they held it off so that they can do a big remake further down the line. XII would have good opportunities for achievements too, like with getting the Tournasol and beating Zordiark.

Well I just found out I'm using the outdated tapatalk Pro. I was unaware that there is a new version out.

If they have the original format version, then they can release it on Steam, can't they? And it would be alot easier to make an HD version from that too. It would be a masterpiece indeed, as this game has some really awesome artwork. Even on a crappy PS1 it looks pretty amazing.

I merged your threads, so that there's only one thread about this topic.

I haven't looked at all of the pictures - but the ones which were already posted look awesome! There should be a remake of FFIX, definitely! *o*

They never ported FFIX to PC so doing it now will be so much work. They'd have to find the source code of a game made 14-15 years ago and then spending all that time and resources making it into a PC port. I don't think they have the source code for a game they didn't plan on doing anything else with after.

Devs always save and guard their source almost as proof that it's their game

Whats the appeal of playing a port of a game on pc? Especially when its an RPG that almost always forces you to use a usb controller to avoid awkward controls?

I want to have my favorite game of all accessible when I travel

    I can't just bring my ps1 or 3 on a plane

And the funny thing is I like the game so much I'd buy it a third time

I can't afford a 200$ handheld device and I think they're a waste tbh. Also I love the steam community and am a avid PC gamer as well

Final Fantasy 9 is my namesake. That's where my username comes from.

Way back when I was a kid just starting to use the internet I couldn't decide on a username so I took two random letters from my name, C and O, and put FF9 after and voila, I am Coff9.

It's always had a special place in my heart and I would love to see some kind of remake just so I can experience the story again.

It really did push the PS1 to its limits, didn't it? When I saw that with the thread, I was like "Well, maybe I wouldn't go that far", but after looking at those screenshots, wow, it really did.

I have this book, and it's really quite impressive and beautiful. It has images of everything, with original Amano concept art and in game, hand drawn including weapon and location designs. Worth a purchase if you're really into the stylings of this game. I wish they would have made these for Chrono series and FFIV, VI and VII
