I remember fighting those enemies before, and wondered why they did that too. I suppose it's just the way the A.I. is programmed. As for why they're programmed like that, I haven't a clue.
Does anyone have any idea why the enemy Zolkaleter inside Gaea's cliff attacks themselves, other enemies they accompany and why the use their poison attack on each other which will slow them down?

I always felt the Gaea's Cliff/Icecicle part of the game was kindof halfassed anyway. (random two headed dragon...dumb)
I think that part of the game was just kindof slapped in there because the programmers felt the needed an 'ice level'. So it didn't get sufficient attention from the programmers/revisors.
Just a theory.
