Hmm, never really used Summons in Final Fantasy VII. The first ones were no more powerful than a magic spell and used more HP, and by the time I got the hard-hitting ones, my magic was even stronger and that combined with regular attacks usually would suffice.
I did use them against the Weapons, however. KotR is pretty much a game-breaker, if you set up your Materia right.
