News Post Nomura and Kitase Expand on what Final Fantasy VII Remake will be as a Product

After the press release put out by Square Enix, there has been a lot of uncertainty and questions about what sort of product Final Fantasy VII Remake will be in the end. Nomura and Kitase have responded in some interviews and questions clarifying and expanding on the brief information of what multi-part series means for Final Fantasy VII Remake and what the players can expect from the game.

The answer what they are making it a multi-part game, they said that the size of Final Fantasy VII is too big as a single product. They feel if they made it one product they would have to cut, reduce or simplify parts of the game. This is not something that they want to do. In fact, they've already stated that there will be more in the game than the original has available. He did say there might be the chance some things from original are cut, but didn't say why or what might be. He did assure that the crossdressing scene with Cloud will remain in game, which some question if it would be cut.

On the point of expanding the game. They've said that they've been focusing on Midgar and Sector 1 and 8. And that there is more exploreable area in Midgar than there was previously for players. They said the city is dense. And this seems to be something they plan to carry through for the rest of the game, not just Midgar. Giving a bigger picture of how large the game could become.

As a clarifying response asked by Kotaku, Square Enix replied that each part of Final Fantasy VII Remake will be equal to a full sized game.

It means instead of concluding in one entry, multiple entries are being considered in development. Each entry will have its own unique story. As a gaming experience, each entry will have the volume of content equal to a full-sized game.
No remarks on release schedule or timing between releases have been said.

Explaining some of the gameplay trailer, Nomura and Kitase confirmed that the ATB remains part of the combat. But that it is being used in a different way than the original. They note it is important to see the meter when it turns red as that is important. They also confirmed that it will be 3 player parties with switching controlled characters as well. Combat they said will be more like Dissidia, giving a ranking of Dissidia, then Kingdom Hearts and then Final Fantasy VII for pacing and speed.

They said they want the old players to have some surprises coming to the game, not referring to story, but expanded content, different gameplay. CyberConnect2 are helping them in development known for the .hack series and Naruto games. And Final Fantasy VII Remake is being made in Unreal Engine 4 rather than an internal engine.

Yeah, if they're delivering a much large world and game to explore then I'm more interested now than before, which was already pretty high. I don't recall if they've ever said anything about over world maps. But maybe they'll take a page from FFXV and make it open world and have the airship tech in from the ground floor rather than hoping they can get the technical stuff figured out before release like FFXV. An open world over world map would be really cool. But signs point to a surprisingly large game. Exploring Junon, Costa del Sol and the other cities will be a lot more fun with a fully fleshed out environment.

My hype has been reignited! See how much better things are with more clarity? Agreed that they did a terrible job at being clear with these announcements, hopefully we will see/hear more from them in the future.

In regards to the airship, i remember reading an interview a while back with the ff15 director that they were experimenting with a dev team on implementing a controllable airship for ff15. Whether or not that will be in FF15 , we can be sure that they will be ready/able to implement in ff7R.

Counting down the days to jump festa!

Yeah they are working with Avalanche Studios, the irony isn't lost on me, the makers of Just Cause to help with the technical side of getting Airships into FFXV. Tabata is dead set on making it happen, just it may be a free DLC if they can't get into the main game he said.

Which is why I said I hope what they learn from FFXV will give them those airships if they went more open world without the worry of making it in game. Open world airship travel in FFVII, that would make me excited.

You and me both! Do you think its safe to assume that it certainly wont be released in 2016?

Well with them splitting up the game, it seems more likely that we'll see it much sooner than most were expecting. Myself I was always planning on seeing in 2017, the 20th anniversary for the game. I think we'll see the first part of the game released in 2017 most likely unless they're significantly further along in development than they've led us to believe. A lot of it probably is going to do depend on when FFXV gets released next year and how KH3 is looking. Which is funny, I'd say that FFVIIR has caught up to where KH3 appears to be from everything that they've shown us for both games. In 6 months we went from cinematic trailer to gameplay trailer for FFVIIR. KH3 was like two years before we got real gameplay.

I find all this very interesting. I played a few episodic games and I enjoyed it. Sure, it is a plain waiting for parts but at least I'm playing a game and not waiting for a long time to get it in full. Plus, they are thinking of expanding the game which is awesome - the more, the merrier I say!

I am a bit annoyed by the general negative comments that I see on the web - millions wanted this game to be made into a remake and now that they are finally doing it, many just complain without even seeing the end result. At least have faith, play the game and then say it sucks IF it will.

In my opinion, some things just can't be the same - I mean, how ridiculous would it look now if Red dresses up as a sailor to sneak into a ship? There are many things like that in the game that would just look ridiculous now. Some parts also seemed rushed, I would love to know more about certain elements of the story.

I'm excited to see more of Midgar and other towns and even more of the story - they obviously love this series since it has so many spin-offs and even a sequel movie that I thoroughly enjoyed.

I will always love the original and I can again enjoy it just like that now on PS4 - so nothing will change that. If they cut something from the story II will just remember how it was before and while being happy to find out new things that they add in the remake. It will always be a win-win situation in my eyes.

I wanted to point out some interesting results that might come from this news.

    Episodic wait:
Given there’s going to be a wait (even if it’s short) between installments, there’s going to be some form of leveling control, whether similar to FF13 or some form of level caps per episode. Otherwise, players will grind between episodes and be OP by the time the next installment is released. That said, I do think they’ve thought about this and there will be a way to help players in the meantime: side-quests, mini-games, exploration and/or a slow but helpful item/gear/spell progression.

    Time strengthens a bond:
We already love the world that FF7 takes place on and with a greater flushed out world—cities, its people, beautiful environments and their wildlife—the bond we create with the world (literally) will be greater and more impactful as the game “progresses”—no spoilers for those who have somehow not played FF7, but you know what I’m talking about if you have. I think this is more important that I think many of you have thought about. The planet and it’s “life stream” is critical, very meaningful and the more time we have to bond with it, the more we’ll be invested into its wellbeing. If FF15 is any indication of the “earth porn” we’ll be getting from FF7, then I can’t wait to step out from Midgard and explore its beauty.

    Greater success, greater rewards:
There’s no guarantee of this happening, but if FF7 is initially received better than their best aspirations, I can only think we’ll get better content then what their minimum plans are to complete FF7R. Sadly, the opposite can happen too . . .

    My only fears….so far:

Price—don’t get me wrong, if they deliver amazing content, I’ll pay whatever is reasonable to see FF7R completed, but they can also take advantage of our fandom and overcharge.

Stray—if they stray too far off from the original….I will cry tears of rage! That said, I’m hopeful they realize what they working with and the ramifications of screwing this up—it will hurt their brand, not to mention sales. It’s in their best interest, to keep our interests. I have read that they plan on having crossdressing Cloud, and if that’s in-game, that bodes well for other funny/odd scenes from the original. I expect changes, some straying and additions we couldn’t have expected, but there’s nostalgia that needs to be fed and I hope they deliver on that.

These are just some of the things I could think of, that’s worth considering with FF7R.

It annoys me when people complain about 'price'. You are getting (possibly) 3 entire games worth so you should pay for 3 entire games worth. Whats the problem? Also, am I the only person who works a job here? Who cares about money.

    geeze.

Also, if you're someone who doesn't like the multi-part release: Just wait til they all come out (and you know it'll be bundled together after they do) and then play it. Because that's how long it'd have taken to be released if it was just one game.

The money isn't the issue, it's more of the comparison of money. The game was originally 50 USD, fully incorporating all of the towns and goodies that it did. Granted now, games are usually 60 USD, but why should it be 180 to have an updated thing that you had 20 years ago.

Also, is it not crazy to anyone else that this game came out almost 20 years ago? Seriously. I was 11 when it came out and 12 when I first experienced it. I'm 29 now. Not really willing to spend 200 on it, even though I can afford it.

My biggest fear was it being episodic. I mean, I play a few episodic games already, and they're okay. But turning one of my favourite games of all time into one gave me pause. It feels like development would be limited to an episode, and that sucks. Imagine waiting for episode four to get to level fifty, or to get KOTR.

I'll get it regardless. Just need to wait and see what they exactly mean by episodic. Because, really, it being "too big" to go all in one go sounds off to me. How come loads of other high demanding games full of content haven't gone episodic? Or is this what we have to look forward to with next gen?

This exactly. I was that guy, who made sure to get Great Gospel on disc 1 on my second or third play. Why would I be any different, trying to maximize my enjoyment out of this installment. Plus I totally want to see how Cloud pulls off his look for Corneo in HD

Its all semantics, dont worry Pete and UE, 'episodic' was merely a mistranslation of what was intended to mean 'part' and 'multi-series' release.
Think of it like the LOTR trilogy. It was one book, split up into 3 movies in order to give us the full experience.
You can compare the remake to the original, but it would be the same as comparing the lotr book to the movies.

thats the easiest comparison I can make until we hear more information.

Yeah it's just Multi-Part, it's not going to be "Episodic" like those adventure games that TellTale releases or what have you. It will literally be like the original's Multi-DISC thing, but instead of multiple discs in one thing, they'll be released as "Full Games" because, well, I guess they don't want the fanbase to wait for much too long.

People also have to realize this remake isn't *really* made for -us-. It's made for people under the age of 20, or people who have never played it before. AKA Trying to bring in new people. That's why it has the ff13 combat system (minus the crystarium crap)

They actually specifically said they are making it for both the old fans and new. I think the combat system looks pretty much exactly the same as the original, except now you can move around and so can enemies.

Edit: being an old fan, I feel like this game is being made with 'us' in mind.

Well, I think there's a lot of good that can come from an episodic release: fully exploring each episode, completing side-quests, mini-games and so on. And I think there's a good chance we won't have to wait too long for each installment. Lastly, I believe they'll come to a reasonable price, and even if we do end up paying more ($120 or something?) for all its content, I'm sure it will be well worth it. There's a lot to look forward to, in all it's beauty.

Yeah, the thing people have to be careful about is that "episodic" is being tossed around by the media. Square Enix's press release specifically said multi-part and the media has inferred that to mean "episodic". Which has Square Enix had clarified, is far from the truth. The closest game that is comparable to what you're seeing with FFVIIR is how the original .hack games were. Each were a full game by themselves and in 4 parts and that an beginning and an end and each was standalone as well. I say .hack is the closest example, but the truth is we don't have an accurate example of what SE is trying here, because no game has been tried like this before. Simply put, you can likely expect to get probably 30-40 hours of content focusing mostly on clearing the game and then probably a lot of side quests and random stuff you can do to balloon out your hours for another 10-20 or something.

But also, this game is being made with new and old in mind. They aren't just updating the visuals and changing combat. They're growing the actual world you can explore. There is going to be things old players never saw before. Playing FFVIIR will be a new experience even for old players, despite knowing the story already.

It will also make it easier probably for old players that have families and lives to play. People that have grown away from JRPGs/RPGs not because they don't like them anymore, but because they no longer have the time. Splitting up a big game into chunks will make it easier for old players to play and come back in the next part.
Curious? There's no limits but your own imagination.

That made me think about the Mass Effect series. I mostly liked how they integrated your character into each "installment," and each game was a complete chapter for the larger story. That might be another decent example of how SE might come at it. And thanks for clarifying their definition; I'll stop using episode or episodic and use installment or part. Because when FF7R is done, it will be sold as one game and flow likely how the original did with the discs.

Even so, I think a lot of positive will come from this format and I only wonder how leveling will work throughout the entire game. And lastly, I really hope we get a FF7R demo of some sort when FF15 is released.

I'm also wondering about the leveling - I presume they will have to put some limit on it during each part, because it would be weird if you could just level up to maximum doing sidequests and whatnot while waiting for the next part to come.

I'm not worried about the price like many are though - if each part will be huge then it deserves to have the same price as all the other full games.

By the way, I can't wait to see what they will come up with that mini games on motorcycle and snowboard. And I wonder if they will keep the scene with rescuing the dolphin, that was pretty weird for me even back then

What if the level cap for the first game is something like 70, the next is 140, and the final is 200? (if there is 3 games)

They could also just not have a cap other than the normal 99 and just only be possible to fight monsters that like lv30 or something. So you can get to lv99 if you want, but it would take forever to do so and just live with knowing there are those hardcore that want to power level or just love the game so much they can't stop playing. For the 1% that will break the balance of the game, they did it on their own and probably know that it would be too easy afterwards.

These are all reasonable guesses. Piggybacking off Andromeda--diminishing returns from weaker enemies would be a great way to let the hardcore players have their way while keeping the game balanced for the more casual players as additional parts are released. Example: Level 10 enemy=200 exp for level 10 characters. Level 10 enemy=100 exp for level 20 characters and so on. Then, perhaps make enemies a minimum of 25 exp after a certain level. I think this would be both logical (fighting weaker enemies wouldn't teach a skilled warrior much) and keep the game balanced for the majority of casual players.

In addition, regardless of character level (HP, MP, other stats), the materia will keep skills and magic in line, as many won't be available until the next part of the game. This would keep the hardcore players happy too, I would think.

    Just a few ideas.

All else, I guess they could always make enemies level up along with the characters.

I don't know. I doubt that they would do that in FFVII like they did in FFVIII. It was only okay and manageable in VIII because you can abuse the system to be overpowered while still being low level, under leveled wasn't a thing in that game. There's no sense of growth or improvement if the enemies are always the same level.

That depends on the power scaling of the enemies and the party members as time goes by. From me playing FFVIII, despite enemies going up in level and becoming stronger, my parties growth had better exponential growth. Also, it is possible to manipulate the standard enemy level if you acquired Tonberry. FFVIIIs cast is for sure the most OP out of both the PS1 and PS2 gen imo.
