Does anyone else think this? I find it really confusing. Just stuff that vary from Cloud to Sephiroth, and all, it's just so confusing.
At the end of Crisis Core, Cloud says he made it to SOLDIER 1st Class, right? But in VII, and also in AC and all, he says he never made it to SOLDIER. I don't get that. And I know that people say it's because his and Zack's memories are like... The same, but I dunno, I just don't get it.
And also, about Sephiroth. I've been thinking, and before, I think I had understood it, but just last night, I've been thinking about him again, and I don't know, I don't get it. In CC, Sephiroth fights Cloud, and loses, and falls into the Mako below the reactor, right? But in VII, they say that his real body is like... In the Northern Crater, or whatever, but it fell into the Mako...
I dunno, it's just so confusing, or maybe it's just me, and my mind unable to comprehend everything.

Don't try to connect what happens in BC, CC, or AC. It will only confuse you, they have nothign to do with the origional script of FFVII.
The story within the game itself is a bit complex the first time you play it.
Cloud is pretty messed up at the end of Crisis Core, thanks to Hojo, and his experiments, Zack's death though, was the main reason he was in such condition. His mind simply couldn't cope with the fact that his best friend is actually gone, as a mean to keep Zack "alive" he took his memories. Zack was a successful 1st Class SOLDIER, thus for one part of the game Cloud thought he was a 1st Class SOLDIER.
As for Sephiroth's body, humans exposed to high dosage of Mako turn into monsters, they don't vanish, just mutate. Sephiroth on the other hand is far from ordinary human, Jenova cells are part of him, thus his body is more resilient to Mako exposure. In period between end of Crisis Core and events of Final Fantasy VII his body traveled through the lifestream til it reached Northern Crater.
Crisis Core is official prequel, and Advent Children is official sequel, therefor they have everything to do with the main events of Final Fantasy VII, the fact that they're not tied too well is another pair of sleeves. Crisis Core is connected rather well, unfortunately, as it usually happens, adding new factors to already told story increased already huge list of plot holes.Originally Posted by JuzamDjinn

I didn't think about those details much, sure some things were different in CC,LA,VII,AC and DoC but still most of it makes sense to me and the fact few details appear differently dont matter much i think.
It also may be the experience of each viewer (Cloud, Zack, Tseng, Tifa and so on.)
Final Fantasy VII: Last Order really makes everything that happened in Nibelheim clear.
Like someone mentioned before, after the battle in the reactor Sephiroth fell into the lifstream (mako being the extracted essence of the lifestream) and was crytalized in a preserved state in the northren crater. The Sephiroth that the party was chasing for half the game was actually a Jenova manipulated clone/Avatar working under Sephiroths mental will (very similar to how Kadaj turned into Sephiroth, just kinda different since he once actually was Sephiroth)
I havn't played Crisis Core but I can assume most of the inconsistencies that are present are likely due to Cloud adopting Zachs history due to the trauma they shared during Sephiroths attack, the experimentation done on them by Hojo and their escape in which Zach died saving Cloud. It was made clear that Cloud never officially became a SOLDIER 1st Class but we can assume that he came close as he did work with both Sephiroth (a 1st Class Legendary soldier) and Zach which probably made it easier for Cloud to adopt the 1st Class title and history.

Yeah sure, although i kinda saw most of it even in FFVII and CC, but details are being talked about in this thread.Final Fantasy VII: Last Order really makes everything that happened in Nibelheim clear.
And in Last Order, Sephiroth jumped down. In FFVII Cloud threw him down.
But like i said, don't matter much to me, may be different's people's experiences, or they just wanted to change that, doesn't have to perfect.

As a game it is great but I am not sure whether I have really understood the story. I think I understand but not completely sure I have got it right anyone who can clear this up for me would be great.

Haha, don't worry, I feel the same as you. I had thought I had understood the storyline of FFVII, but I've been playing it over again, and it's just really confusing to me. It's honestly the most confusing game I've ever played, though I still love it. :\
It's just Sephiroth. It's Sephiroth who always makes me more confused then I should be. He ****s with Cloud's mind, and he ends up ****ing with mine too, so I'm unable to comprehend what's happening. Gods.. xD
