First, there's a thread in General Final Fantasy. You might want to continue your discussion there. It'd be good to merge both threads.
Second, it's an entirely new game, using old-school graphics and gameplay. In fact, it *should* be treated as a new numbered FF game (heck, this should be FF XV; if classic Mega Man can do it, why not FF?). The story is no sequel to any of the numbered FF games, and it's entirely new. To be precise, it's more of a "gaiden" than an actual spin-off, in the sense that it uses many of the numbered FF games' traditional mechanics (Summons, Jobs, ATB, etc.).
The Job system is reminiscent of Final Fantasy V or Final Fantasy Tactics in that you can equip class features of other classes, but it plays a bit more like FF III/IV: you get temporary characters every episode and a fixed party.
