Gotta be Leila for me, she was a good additional magic caster which saved time.
Minwu
Josef
Gordon
Leila
Ricard
Leon
My favorite was Leila, even though her defense was poor, her high agility and attack speed as well as her proficiency with knives and swords make her extremely useful. Starting with a level 4 Thunder spell was also a welcome perk.
Gordon is way stronger in the GBA version than he was in the original NES version. He also doesn't start with 50HP. I found him quite useful as an attacker, as I did Josef and Ricard.
Minwu would have been more useful if he joined the party later on in the game. Despite having a full repertoire of white magic spells, most of them go unused in the time you actually use him.
Leon...meh. He was seriously nerfed in the GBA version. He totally kicked ass in the original. Black Knight my ass.

There is a thread like this already, and it's not even on Page 2. Look before you make a thread.

Minwu was great, because he could cast Ultima. The healing spells were great too.
Plus, he seemed to be totally different from all the young people you generally have in your party.
Crao Porr Cock8: Getting it while the getting's good
I am a huge fan of dragoons so I gotta go with Ricard. He was a bad ass. Especially if you gave him dual lances.
Minwu was alright. Only thing I used him for was healing my other characters...
Minwu was my favorite because he was the first temporary character you get and hes much better than your other guys
I must admit... I didn't like any of the characters in this game. ^^"
But I was quite sad when Leila left my party (and never came back...). She was strong and somehow I liked her way of talking. (Normally I don't like pirates at all ^^")
9x-7i > 3(3x-7u)
I've just completed 2 this very evening.
I also don't use the guides for the battles so I've just found out I could have made the last boss a lot easier but it was a satisfying win after a few attempts!
I liked Richard. The temp characters, I never usually bothered building them up but Richard was tough enough without building.
I think he also suited no magic (I was too tight to teach temp characters magic)
My favourite character in FFII is Ricard, because i have always loved the draggon job, and think it's awesome how they can jump so high and for so long. . .
So my vote obviously goes to Ricard

So far I like Josef the best. Total bad ass.
Spoiler: I was really sad when he sacrificed himself.
