Unexpectedly Good Games

Ever play a game that you had little expectations of being very good, but then discovered that it really was actually pretty good?

Kingdom Hearts was kind of like that for me. I mainly wanted it because seeing some Final Fantasy characters again made me all giddy, but then when I played it, I realized how much fun it was. I wasn't expecting it to be a bad game, but I also wasn't expecting to have as much fun with it as I did, and still do.

Also, WarioWare Twisted for the GBA. It was in the clearance bin at Wal-Mart, and I decided to just go ahead and grab it. Turned out to be a really fun and unique game. I had tons of fun with that one.

This, It's one of my faves now.

Also, Tales series. I just bought Tales of Symphonia one day because I saw it in a PSM. I wanted to play something new,same with Harvest Moon. I like it a lot now, I want to try and play all of them.

It seems like evey time I just randomly play a game I never heard of it ends up being an awesome game.

Yeah Kingdom Hearts was like that for me. It blew me away when I played it though. When I heard about it, I thought the mix of Disney and FF would not work in the slightest, but I'm so glad I was wrong.

Another was The World Ends With You. While I thought it looked ok, I thought it would be just another RPG. I was more than wrong. Definitely the most unique game I've ever played.

The first Mass Effect game. I thought it got a lot of hype and after playing Bioware's last "masterpiece" aka KotoR 2, I had my doubts. It turned out to be one of my favorite games on the 360 though, it's a really fun shooter/RPG with a giant galaxy-sized storyline to boot. It's cool to get caught up in it.

Bioware didn't develop Kotor 2. That was Obsidian. And it was awesome, despite being incomplete, noob.

Batman: Arkham Asylum. Seriously, it was a batman game being developed by a no-name developer, why would it be any good? Then, as if getting smacked in the face by a lol wut, I played it and discovered that it was freaking amazing. The Dark Knight was certainly a dark horse that year.

I got a few to list:

Harvest Moon - used to be a bad name around me because my sister hogged my game consoles for it, but then, one day i decided to play it and really enjoyed it.

Super Paper Mario - Wasn't too big into the paper mario games but this one really stood out and makes me want to go back and really play the other games.

Fallout 3 - I wasn't too sure about this game but when I rented it from gamefly I really enjoyed it.

Modern Warfare 2 - I'm not really into war themed shooters but the multiplayer mode of this game got really addicting and I enjoy every match even if i lose badly.

Last game I care to list out is Beetle Adventure Racing - This game I got on my 9th birthday and I wasn't too interested in it but when I played it, I loved it. They don't make racing games like this anymore.

I bought this game called SOS: Final Escape (or Disaster Report in America) a few years ago for the PS2. It was pretty cheap, so I thought "why not?" and gave it a go. For starters, the controls weren't all that great, neither was the graphics. The main character isn't very speedy either. But it turned out to be an alright game when you got playing. I enjoyed it despite not really liking the first few minutes.

Dark Cloud is another, and it's now one of my favourite video games ever. Me and my brother just picked it up one day from the rental, and like... kept renting it because it was that good. Neither of us had heard anything about it before we rented it, and it was purely because of the cover (the others looked boring - the selection was limited in the game department). Also, it was a rare game to find over here.

Fallout 3. Yeah yeah. I only played it because my teacher lent the college's copy to me for a weekend. I don't quite know why, but I was the only girl gamer in the class so... yeah. I think he thought it was a joke. Then I asked for another week with it. Then another week... and before I knew it, I'd borrowed it for a month and was asking for it for Christmas. I didn't think it'd be my type of game at the time, but I just got hooked.

Nier. I've not finished much of it yet, but I honestly thought it'd be a let down. Turns out not to be as bad as I thought it would be and I was enjoying it... before Red Dead Redemption turned up. =S

Final Fantasy XII - never could I imagine that XII would be my second favorite Final Fantasy, at least not after reading all those negative comments, and seeing as it's among the top in polls on various sites as weakest game in the series.


Mirrors Edge - the entire concept didn't strike me as good at first, forced to run from enemies, and to pull acrobat moves at the top of skyscrapers didn't seem appealing, that is until I actually gave a try. The gameplay is simply brilliant, same can't be said for the story, though it ain't shabby, the entire game being too short is the only negative thing about it.

Kingdom Hearts ~ I was very skeptical about this the first time I saw it. I was like wtf, FF characters and Disney, doesn't sound right to me. But once I played it my mind quickly changed. I fell in love with it and never looked back.

Final Fantasy ~ the first time I played a FF game I was very skeptical. It wasn't something I was into at the time. the only games I had played were Tony Hawk games, Tekken, and Street Fighter. A rpg wasn't really high on my list. Very glad I did try it cause I am in

Infinite Undiscovery: This is the very first game that came to my mind when I read the first post. When I was planning on buying this game--since I found out tri-Ace had developed it--I was kind of skeptical. I even remember my cousin watching the trailer with me and remarking on how the game has such a low rating and that I should get something with a better score. That was a bit discouraging, but I bought it anyway. And sure enough, I really loved it. In fact, it's probably the only game that makes me not regret having bought an Xbox 360 that I don't use anymore.

Minesweeper - Hours devoted to it... not a single one of them with realizing what's going on.

Interesting topic, I never rented games that looked stupid must less buy them.

Maybe go with Zelda II or Super Mario Bros 2 (USA) - both different from their prequel, while great games, I was surprised at how great they were.
