    PS3 died this time. =(

First it was my 360 that RR'd that I replaced for free, and now a year later it's my PS3. I haven't even had my PS3 for a full year yet. ...Sure, I bought it refurbished...

And I bought it from GameStop. I don't even remember how long they said their warranty was. I doubt it was for a year. >_>

So now I have to go get it repaired. For 120$. Looks like that's where some of my tax money is going. Good thing I backed all my stuff up.

Has anyone else's PS3s died before?

YES. I had a thread on it if you remember a while back. About a year ago actually, I think. The lens went out, ended up getting my PS3 slim 250gb.

If it's a lens you can fix it yourself for 60$.

    Sorry to hear that.

Yeah, it's probably the lens. And I could fix it myself for $60, if I had the equipment to do it. I don't have the proper screwdrivers for it, I don't think. =\

Yeah it takes the special ones. And you always risk ****ing shit up if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Not assuming you don't, just saying. ^^

Yeah. I found a video tutorial that shows how to replace a lens, but I don't even know what kind of lens to buy... and I don't really trust myself with stuff that sensitive.

So I'd rather shell out the 120 (maybe the extra 20 for worry free shipping. Still saving $10 from Sony..) and have a professional do it.

Yeah, it's really worth the convenience imo. I actually gave my shell to a friend who didn't have a PS3. He was going to send it in to get it fixed. Since it was the lens, he could play the dl content and do everything that didn't involve discs. We both win!

    Noooes! =(
I'm glad you have a backup of your data at least. That's just really sucky... sorry hun. =(

I had one die in May 2008ish. Granted, I only had one PS3 game at the time, but I lost all my FFVII data. I made a thread in FFVII about my progress before it died, so you can see what I'd lost... -_-

All these new consoles die at the drop of a hat. I have a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) which is still in good working order, aspart from the Reset button (the games need a helping hand to connect properly!), which I bought second hand earlier this year (£30)

I'm on my second PS2, though. :/ I've had an X-Box 360 for 2 years, but I'm always too busy to play, so it hasn't had a chance to go wrong... yet... ¬_¬

My PS1 is still in perfect working condition and ive had it since it was released over a decade ago.

A part of me thinks these new consoles are designed to break after a short time forcing people to buy a new machine and sadly it works. I have went through 2 xbox 3 shitties in what us irish would call pissing time.

My ps3 on the other hand is still going strong however i dont play consoles as much as i used too

    Hope mine doesnt break

Victoria are you not able to plug your old PS3 HD into a new one to keep all of your stuff? I was under the impression they can be removed and replaced?

Isn't this kind of like comparing a bike to a car and claiming that the car is a crappier build because it breaks more often? Let's face it, these new systems are a lot more complicated than their predecessors. I'm no electrician, so I'm going purely by speculation here, but it seems to me that there are way more things that can break in this generation's consoles so it seems pretty logical that they'd break down more often.

That being said, the only console I've ever had break down on me is an N64 and it was only earlier this year, so that's not too bad, considering its age. My PS3 is in good working condition...at least for now.

    Until now!

Other then the Wii, my new consoles seem far less durable then my older ones.
Doing a course on Design and Technology did show me how built in obsolescence can be beneficial (just not to the purchaser of the goods), but it strikes me as odd many units are failing within a couple years when the companies have made it seem they're not looking to make successors for a few times that period.

Of course, that's presuming built in obsolescence is in any way responsible. As Jin mentioned, more components often means more can go wrong and newer consoles are much more complex then the older ones.

Nu-uh! Don't ever do that! It reformats the hard drive to the new PS3. Therefore, deleting all the data. However, there's now an option to transfer data between PS3 consoles in the XMB somewhere. Which is pretty ****ing stupid if your PS3 dies and you can't access the XMB. >>; The data saved on the PS3 is encrypted, and the only way to keep saved data and the like is to back up the system with a portable hdd large enough, or to "copy" the data one by one from the Save Data Utility.
I did some research when changing my PS3's original hdd to a bigger one.

Only console we've never had problems with was the PSOne. Still works perfectly. However, with some games, we have to put something heavy (like a large book) on top of the console to get it to read the disc - scratches... We've had... four or five PS2 consoles - two of which were bought, two refurbished ones sent by Sony, and a brand new one for free from Sony with a Sony apology letter for having to send us so many. The first PS3 I had just one day stopped recognising the hard drive (I'd had the bugger for about two to three months -_-). Original Xbox disc tray doesn't open unless you hit the top of the console. The 360 red ringed about a year and a bit ago.

    So yar...
