Thread: Pokemon Black/White Journal

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

I only made it to the second gym, and died horribly. I had the same problem as Victoria: I went through the game, and make it to the gym with levels around 15. Time to power level...

    My Pokemon Team thus far:
    Lillipup lv 15
    Woobat lv 15
    Panpour lv 15
    Blitzle lv 15
    Snivy lv 15

Victoria, I have access to Wi-Fi, so if you still need to trade to evolve your Pokemon I'd be willing to help you out.
Proud to be in the United States Navy.

Nah, I'm good. And also, your problem is that you don't have a fighting Pokemon. >_>
I beat that Gym with just the fighting Pokemon alone at about 15-16. Well, two fighting Pokemon. One as backup.

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

I actually got this the other day, been playing it a little bit. Not overtly fond that you only have access to the first two routes before you beat the first gym leader, and there only seem to be 3 kinds of pokemon to catch at that part of the game (although I haven't played during the day yet. Are there other poke-manz to be caught then?) But mostly I think the grinding that early on annoys me. I think in the last two games, you got three or four areas to explore before the first gym, right? And those areas were bigger. But yeah; grinding is my least favorite aspect of an RPG, and there it is, right at the beginning of the game... Also, I didn't care for the looks of any of my starter pokemon. And that fire-type some random kid gives you to use against the gym leader strongly resembles the starter from the last generation... They must be running out of ideas.

This game better get better, S, or I blame YOU. And you will be ENDED. Anyhoo...

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

1st gen - First Route + Viridian Forest, route after forest, that's it.
2nd Gen - First two routes, sprout tower, that's it.
3rd Gen - you get the idea.

So really.... three, max. And current gen...

First Route, Second Route/Forest area, Dreamyard area (trainers only). So about three in that one also. I suppose it's more like two, as far as catching Pokemon goes.

And no, there's no different between day and night.

Trust me, the game gets better. And its' an RPG, you're supposed to grind in them. >_>
You've always had to grind in all of the Pokemon games. I mean, you could get by the gym with your second starter without even leveling at all. Or maybe once.

It's not that bad. ...Compared to the end game, anyway. (Grinding from 50'ish to 70'ish just to fight the elite four a second time.)

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

How did I know you'd come in and "correct" me? Yeah, I forgot about the first town.

And the second gen also had the start of that one cave, a portion of that end route, and you could go past the city with the first gym into the next route. And there were more pokemon to catch in the first couple routes.

And I don't want to fuckin' grind right at the beginning of the game. That's a chore. That's not fun. I want to explore, I want to find new pokemon. Grinding should be a mid-to-end game thing with Pokemon, considering how tedious it can be in it. But I will give it a chance, probably. Anyhoo...

Got through the temple thing finally, found there was no way out, and backtracked to the proper route. I got a fossil turtle out of it though! It's in my party. I've been lacking a water Pokeyman.

When I got to the next town it was more Bianca story. Nice.

They have a lot of stuff to do in this particular town, and the music is my favorite yet. I REALLY like that the cities are both themed and seem to collect a lot of one particular thing inside it. Lots of battling. Lots and lots of battling. I did the Battle Subway which is pretty interesting, but I'm not entirely sure what purpose it serves. I'm assuming it's so that you can fight your friends' Pokemon again. I also did the Pokemon Theatre... which is really girly, especially the dress-up screen, but whatever! Something to do.

I also found the Strength HM. They mixed up a small boy's sprite who was talking about the HM with an old man's who actually gave the HM, so the old man was saying things like, "This city is so totally cool!" while the boy was saying, "You should be a man!" I get the feeling this has happened before though, so it's probably purposeful as some kind of inside joke.

After that... N appeared at some point. Plot twist and ferris wheels and the circumference of one is 2pi(r). He seems like an alright character. They are really trying to get the rivals involved more with the game, which I sort of like. Some people seem to be involved by all the rival battles, but it tends to break up the monotony for me. It's nice to have different things happen after playing multiple iterations of the same thing. Then I'll actually remember the routes, even if they are numbered.

Gym leader who is a model and who's world map sprite looks somewhat like a bee (FFVII...?) was beaten. Tron-esque laser roller coaster dungeon. Was straightforward, but sweet. Same with her electric Pokeymans. Although her final zebra Pokemon used Fire Charge and KO'd some of my lower level team members, so I had to be careful. Can't tell if they were trying to make her tsundere or what.

There was some lady who you can ride the ferris wheel with after you beat N. Again, reminded me of FFVII, although the fact that you are like 13 years old and she cries while you ride it with her is some unsettling. Then she says she wants to ride with you again. Will they take it anywhere, I wonder? They made a bit of a story. Blatant shota?

Then I went to Route 16 and caught Pokemon. I sort of want to use that trash Pokemon. Damn flying squirrel Pokemon only has a 10% chance of appearing in swaying grass. Screw that.

Things start warming up once you beat the first gym leader. At that point you can go to the Dreamyard (I think that's east of the first gym) and capture about 2-3 new Pokemon. It also introduces the swaying grass, where rare Pokemon appear. One of those is Audino. I use it in my party, but you'll run into it often enough to where you'll be able to beat it repeatedly. It speeds up leveling considerably. Like, one or two levels at a time if you're not considerably high. Make sure to use repels to reach the swaying grass/ground/whatever.

After that the game starts shoving numerous different Pokemon down your throat. Each area yields about 4-5 new Pokemon at a time, not counting some of the rarer ones. You're going to have a hell of a time trying to catch 'em all, which I'm assuming is also on purpose. I think they want you to trade more. So, friend codes!

Gym battles in this game are considerably more difficult in terms of raw level, but I don't think you're expected to grind too much. They probably want to you play smart and not use brute force, which is why they've made sure so far to place Pokemon that are strong against the gym leader's nearby.

The Pokemon in this gen are weird... but that's okay. We have 650 Pokemon or so. There is room for weird.

    Ok all you pokelovers...

I am looking at picking up a DS and Pokemon Black. I was a huge fan of red/blue and gold/silver. Not so much a fan of ruby (but I want to go back and try it again).

Needless to say, I just want to make sure everyone will agree on this, is black/white worth it? Refreshing yet enjoyable? I felt like, once getting to ruby, there were so many pokemon it just made it unfun as selection was hard. It sounds like white/black gives you a clean slate with 150 new pokemon and stuff. I also really like how you get that monkey looking pokemon that complements your starter.

And I think looks do matter... If I can't stand looking at a pokemon they don't last long in my party. its all about the coolness factor. Thats why Gyrados and Gengar always had a spot in my lineups... freakin cool pokemon in my mind.

Gyarados and Gengar were actually good Pokemon though. Sometimes good Pokemon might not look that cool. Like Conkledurr. Strongest Fighting type in the game.

And yes, it's worth it; and it's enjoyable. =D

I also hear Muk was pretty good, high defense and all that... but you would never catch me dead with Muk in my party... lame sauce.

Clefable though? That dude would rock you hard.

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

I'm a heartbreaker... My name... Charles.
Got through the next route, saw the champion, don't remember much. Something about Chevron wanting strength blah blah blah. Crossed a huge bridge. Caught the blue duck that precludes Carlswan. Swapped it into my party with that fossil turtle. Awww yeah.

Got through Driftveil City (next town) really quickly. Was sort of boring, general gray murkiness of it aside. I swear there was a funeral home somewhere up on the hill in that town. There was also a man named Charles. When I first saw him he was ramming into another NPC sprite on his motorcycle. Is still hilarious. Did my first triple battle. Was cool.

Found Team Plasma hiding out somewhere then beat the gym leader, who somehow thought I just had to catch Team Plasma before I fought him. Screw him. He used ground types. The difficulty is getting harder... I had to resort to using my starter to keep them down.

After that was Route 6. It was the prelude to something far worse than anything on Route 4. THAT GOD FORSAKEN CAVE. It was called Chargestone Cavern or something and every step I took stupid steel Pokemon or that dumb electric tic would appear. Oh, or that electric sperm fish. The place was huge too, so I actually started running from battles just so I wouldn't have to waste my time. Don't normally do that. Usually I will try to find all the hidden items with the dowser and such, but I'm not sure I was able to.

Along the way through there I learned about how great Bianca is, how whiny N is getting, and how awesome it is to have a Lucky Egg. I also caught my first Shiny. It was that steel cocoon egg that reminds me of something from Gold/Silver. Got some nuggets from the Nugget Brothers who told me to Nuggetaboutit. Then I bolted from the cave and now I'm in the next town.

Also went to see the ferris wheel lady. Same dialogue. Hopefully the Shota Chronicles will continue.

You may want to look at the Pokemon in this game before you get it. Some of them look cool, but most of them are really weird. They give off more of a low level Digimon vibe than anything else. Other than that, the game's solid!

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

Has that dream world thing been available outside of Japan?

I have yet to find a clear explanation for it. Do you just log on and get a random encounter of any pokemon? do you walk in an "imaginary" field and run into random battles? Is catching pokemon like the safari zone where its a different strategy and they can run away? Last time I checked bulbapedia it was very vague.

can any pokemon be caught from there including legendary or rare (i.e fossil? gift pokemon? Zorua? Darkrai?)

I already know and understand that ones caught there will have different abilities and it works in conjunction with a website but that's about all I can get from it.

One somewhat unrelated question: If say, a friend got the Celebi that unlocks Zorua then used it in his game to catch a Zorua. Could he then trade the Celebi to me and I could also unlock Zorua? Living nowhere special enough to be privileged to get event exclusives in the past and not personally owning any game past the 3rd generation I have no idea if this is an option.

Wish I knew Dan. I haven't even gotten the Pokemon necessary to gain access to Dream World... lol. The evolution of Munna, I think. It is, however, available in the west.

Soccer with Pokemon is Pokemon soccer. The abbreviation is... Poccer?
Aight, it's been a bit (since no one posts here and I don't feel like double posting), butttt let's see. After exiting that dumb cave, had to follow the gym leader (flying Pokemon one) up a tower full of annoying candle ghosts. I thought the game's difficulty had been letting up, but the level sort of spiked. This Pokemon seemed like a bit of an annoyer to begin with. Like that garbage bag Pokemon, it's just designed to cause a burn status. At one point all my Pokemon were down except one, and I turned back down multiple levels and to a Pokemon Center. Later I found out that a nurse NPC was just a little ways more...

Finished that thing, rang the bell. Beat the gym leader, who's gym had cannons all over it. Wasn't too bad. That mole Pokemon is proving a lot better than I thought it would be. It evolved into a steel type, so it's decent against flying types if you have a rock move.

The town itself was very small and a bit unmemorable. It has an air field with quite a few hidden items on it. That's sort of it. The third and fourth cities really stood out, but I guess that's because they were so huge.

Continued onto the next route. It has little wooden beams you can use to walk over the grass, but if you stay still too long or go the wrong direction you'll fall off. I wish more areas had these. I really don't want to fight or even bother going to the item menu to use a repel at times. Fought Cheren, who is still whiny. The champion appeared and schooled him in being zen and shit. Then he gave me Surf, and I high-tailed it back to the hometown rather than continue on. I'm going to go through all the places I've missed because I didn't have surf. Maybe I will find something cool. Also you can surf faster rather than go at a static speed, which I thought was cool.

The music in this game is really good. The bike and surf music is great. Some of the town themes are a bit repetitive, but it's cool. Battle music is top-knotch for a Pokemon game.

Haven't done an update on my team in a while, so I'll do that now:

Emboar (No doubt a scrapped design for Ganon in Wind Waker)
Audino (My dumb normal that will never evolve but is good for team battles)
    Swanna (Carlswan)
Munna (I probably won't Moonstone it until level 40. It seems to cease learning moves when it does evolve)
Excadrill (rad mole that will probably be replaced one day)
Leavanny (Holds the "Faints Most Frequently" title)

My Pokemon are at a pretty decent level without having to grind too much, but the AI in this game can be pretty unforgiving. It can be pretty dumb at times, but at others it will exploit weaknesses to the nth. It only takes one **** up to completely ruin a Pokemon too, even if you're many levels higher than them. I guess I can't just move spam anymore. Used to be able to do that with few problems.

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

So S, are you still playing? I totally still am. You probably beat it a long time ago, I'd imagine, heh.

I've been playing it a little bit off and on, although my game says I've clocked in 90+ hours (must just be because I leave it on a lot of times. Seems to keep time even when the DS is shut.) I'm on Route 10. Just beat the dragon-type gym leader to earn my 8th badge. My team consists of a level 47 Krookodile, a level 46 Unfezant, a level 49 Sawsbuck, a level 47 Musharna, a level 46 zebstrika, and a level 46 samurott (yeah, my starter pokemon is one of my lowest levels in my main team. Not usually the case with me.) Struggled in the dragon gym a little bit-at least by comparison to the last few gyms, which were pretty easy-because none of these pokemon had a strong attack against dragon types. My sawsbuck knows Nature Power, however, which turns into tri-attack in that gym, and often freezes opponents.

I am liking the plot to this one a bit more than past Pokeman games, although some of it seems a little forced. Like, "this idea we're conveying is deep! Don't you appreciate how deep it is, just because we say it's deep?" I like the music a lot though; it's pretty top notch, like in most pokemon games. Also, I've actually grinded a lot, which means my earlier griping about grinding was probably ungrounded. It was probably just because I didn't like the pokemon I had access to. That, accompanied by the grinding made it bad. But once you get past that first area, it is fun. It's really starting to pick up for me, in fact.

I think my favorite pokemon thus far this generation is either my zebstrika or my sawsbuck, although the krookodile is pretty cool too. Named him Croco, heh.

So, anyone who's beaten this game, do you think I should grind a little before I go on? I was thinking about getting my team up to level 49 before proceeding. Anyhoo...

Yes. Grind more. Elite Four is 50+ easily. You should also see about getting an Axew in your team. (That's what I did before I went to the 8th gym.)

And as far as the plot goes.. nothing is as it seems, is all I'm going to say.

After I beat the game, I pretty much stopped playing. I AR'd a complete Pokedex just so I could see what I'd get out of it. .......Nothing. Just a "Hey! You did it! Yay!" .....I'm not even kidding. No item, no money, no certificate... Nothing.

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

I've been playing Pokemon Black for over a week now, it's been interesting to say the least, in fact way more than last generation, you could say this game brought back my fate in Pokemon. I love how it's somewhat more challenging than it's predecessors, nothing extreme, still, few battles, first gym in particular caught me on surprise. Team Plasma's goal seems noble, though their execution is no different from that of Team Rocket. I've collected seven badges so far, my Pokemon seem bit overpowered at this stage of game:

    1. Samurott lv. 52
    2. Beartic lv. 52
    3. KlinkKlang lv. 52
    4. Boldor lv. 53
    5. Simisear lv. 53

I'm using Lucky Egg which makes grinding a lot easier. Including the ones I have in my team I obtained total of 68 Pokemon, legendary Cobalion among them. Overall this generation looks weird, though it doesn't bother me that much.

    Re: Pokemon Black/White Journal

Xanatos: I think you could actually beat the game with those levels. I'm not sure on the combination, as I used an almost totally different team, but my levels were fairly comparable; maybe a level higher on average. Although the last fight was pretty tough for me. I actually rode out the last for fights on my Samurott, heh; just surfed away. There was one electric enemy that I had to use another pokemon to whittle down before I brought Samurott out, but yeah. Seemed like the last guy was allergic to using status restorers or potions. (He did use one, but only one.)

So after I restarted, I went into that cave that was blocked by the martial arts dude. lol, jump in levels (the trainers in there have pokemon in the mid 60 level range, fyi to anyone who's not gotten that far.) I beat the guy in the first room pretty easily, because I had my zebstrika out in front. Then I accidently started a battle with the second guy, and barely made it out of that. Decided I'd go visit the Elite Four again after that... Their levels significantly rise after you beat the game too. I was like, "HOLY SHIT!" Just turned it off, haha. Knew I wasn't gonna make it through even one bout.

I liked it overall. I thought they stiffed me a little as far as end credits go, but that was an intriguing conclusion. I wasn't really all that surprised by anything, although one thing made me go "Uh oh." Anyhoo...
