moments when you've almost givin up gaming altogether

I've recently had one of these moments

the day began just like any other i woke up and walked into my kitchen
took a bottle of pomegranate juice out of the fridge and entered my game room i turned on my ps3 and then i saw it
the hard drive is corrupted do you wish to restore it yes/no
at first i thought it was harmless
it had happened before with no problem
but this time it was different
when it finished the system restarted
    and there it was again
the hard drive is corrupted do you wish to restore it yes/no so i waited.
fearing of the impending death of my 55gbs worth of music movies and games
    then it happened again
the hard drive is corrupted do you wish to restore it yes/no
i shut off the system and took it the local electronics repair store where i was then told that not only had i lost all my data but that the system was beyond repair
i spent 4 days after that unable to play even the simplest game
then one day at the local flea market i saw a ps2 game it had such an interesting case that i had to have it
i payed $12 for it, the second i got home i popped it in the system and realized it was nowhere near as interesting as the case led on
but i realized that this was what gaming was all about and i got into it for that reason

    i apologize for rambling on
please tell me your story's or experience's

I'd say after my Playstation 2 broke for the FOURTH time, I was pretty close to saying "f-this". I haven't been overly pleased with Sony and the quality of their systems so that was nearly the breaking point. The inconvience of having to get it all fixed and the relief of thinking the problem is sold and having it blow up in your face again (not literally of course lol) was quite frustrating.

It actually had nothing to do with the games themselves. I almost stopped playing when many of my friends basically just grew apart. I am a pretty social gamer. We used to play games together all the time, but now I only really speak to two friends now, and they both live 90 miles away. It really is my wife and me. People in the local area do not respond to calls/texts and if they do, it is about a month later. It is hard to play games that are multiplayer because the solo content is lacking.

I still play RPGs a lot. I am waiting for Diablo 3 and Guild Wars 2. Might look into playing Tales of Graces F. Other than that, gaming is still alive partially.

Haha, same here. Seriously, that game has shaken my faith in Square Enix a little, which is sad.

When my first ever computer, my BBC Micro Model B broke ( the connection cable broke beyond repair, the system was fine, which was what annoyed me) I was really upset and didn't play any games, not even my Game Boy, for ages afterwards. When I fonally came into money of my own, I bought a Playststion, and didn't look back. That is, until I moved in with a guy, and gaming took a back seat. He wanted to watch s***ty TV all the the time and, although he did take an interest in some games (Final Fantasy X-2, The Getaway series, GTA 3), it wasn't a big thing, and I had games that went unplayed until fairly recently.

Now I'm with someone (when work doesn't get in the way!) who also plays games ( X Box on particular) I play a lot more than I did before, even types of games I never would have thought of playing 3 years ago.

never almost gave up on gaming. If anything, when I hit a certain age I stopped for a while.. but then some great titles got me back into it. I spent $2,600 on computar parts and put them together to create a high end machine last year. Dead space 2 in 3d =D

First of all why are there only four choices on your poll (am I the only one who sees that poll up there), and what exactly does my favorite video game company has to do with me "giving up" on gaming?

Now to answer your actual question, I hate certain aspects of video games in general and I don't really play games as often as I used to, but never ever have I considered giving up on something I love so dearly.

That must be a really high tech machine. I only spent about $700 plus a $300 display and mine is mid-high (or at least I like to think it is haha)

Re: moments when you've almost givin up gaming altogether

I have too many gaming systems to ever give up. If I've been T.O.-ed by a corrupted PS2 memory card, I can play on the PS1 or PS-3 or PSP or gamecube or Wii... also, it helps that I have an automatic "I guess I can play it all over again and get extra completion rate" whenever I'm responsible for accidentally recording over my stuff. It happens suspiciously often (is my subconscious trying to tell me something?)

Re: moments when you've almost givin up gaming altogether

I've never almost given up on gaming itself...what I've almost given up on is the gaming scene. I will explain why with a short story, because it's more fun to read (and write) than a straight-up rant.

*Ahem* Around the mid-2000s, I was playing away and really enjoying myself, waiting curiously for what the next "generation" of games might bring. One night when I was about to doze off, with happy visions of Soul Calibur II still in my head...a strange, repulsive little man jumped right through my window (which was closed) and landed on my bed.

"HI!!" he shouted in a really loud, annoying TMZ-style voice. "I'm an allegorical character for the near future of video games! You can call me Mr. 7!!"

"Um...hi," I said nervously, glancing around for something I could use as a weapon. "Look, that's interesting and all, but can't it wait until morning?"

"EH-EHHH! Can't stop can't wait gotta tell you now now now! " Mr. 7 looked and sounded as if he'd just cleared out all the Red Bull at the nearest gas station. He twitched crazily and hopped around the room. He was designed with graphics so slick they looked downright gaudy, and his hipster outfit was so bright it vibrated. In the brief moments when I could focus on him, it stung my eyes even worse.

"The seventh generation is upon us, and here's what it's gonna be like!" Mr. 7 continued. "Remember when playing video games felt special?"

I stretched my arms and yawned. "Yeah, what about it--"

"PSYCH!!! Not anymore!! Now everybody's gonna be doin' it! The word 'gamer' will lose all meaning! RPG's are gonna go online! So every character is a real person and every 'mission' will be OgreDikk69 and biebers_afairy_xxx hitting on female characters and insulting each others' mothers while the enemies kill you!!"

"But I play RPG's to get away from reality. Why would I--"

"I NO RITE?!?! And it gets even better. First the PlayStation 3's gonna come out."

"...What, already? The PS2 is doing fi--"

Mr. 7 was enjoying this way too much. "And Sony's gonna act like a bunch of arrogant a$$es and start it at FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS! With NO interesting launch titles and a Blu-Ray player!"

I frowned. "I don't want a Blu-Ray player. The discs are too expensive."

"SUX 4 U LOLOLOLOLOLOL! Then the Xbox 360 will come out, but like, way different from Xbox. Instead of a decent system with boring games, they'll have decent games but on a really CRAPPY system. With a 50% failure rate!"

"Fifty percent? And people will buy it?!"

"Aw yeah! And when they break down you'll call Microsoft and they're all like 'wut-EVER, just give it back and we'll like, just send you another broken console that will die in a month.' It'll take 'em four years to put out a decent version of that thing!"

    "I don't like that, Mr. 7."

"SHADDAP! We're just gettin' started," Mr. 7 started slapping his own butt and doing cartwheels on the wall. He seemed to get more obnoxious and crazy with each passing minute. "Then there's the WII!"

    "The who?"

"The WII, stupid! The new Nintendo machine! And it's ALL GROWN UP." As I looked on in horror, Mr. 7 pulled a plastic white thing with buttons out of his pants and started jerking it around. "AWWW yeah that feels good..."

"Oh Jesus! Get that thing away from me!!"

"It's called a Wiimote, duuuude! And your whole family can play with it all day!"

I covered my eyes in disgust. "Oh Lord, get that image out of my head. Look, Mr. 7, I don't think the future of games looks very interesting. No offense, but I need you to get out of--"

"WAIT THERE'S MORE! Once respected developers will be cranking out sucky remake$ and sequel$! Final Fantasy will go online and spiral into mediocrity! Sega will run the Sonic franchise into the ground! The exact same shooting game will come out over and over! Game systems will turn into computers! But thatz okay CUZ LOOK!" Mr. 7 cackled and lifted up his shirt. "BOOBZ IN HD!!! "

"Okay, that's it," I said. "I didn't think I'd ever have to do this, but you leave me no choice." I hit a button on a remote control. My closet door opened to reveal a gray plastic robot.

"LOL WUZZAT?" Mr. 7 slobbered as it rolled towards him, arms outstretched.

"It's a vintage Nintendo ROB, Mr. 7. Your very own Robot Operated Buddy. And he wants to play with you." I smiled fiendishly. The peripheral's red eyes lit up as its clamps reached out for its prey.

"Wait, get away from me dood! I'm a G*MeRRR! You can't--NO! AAAAARRRGH!"

I waited until his screams finally stopped, then petted ROB on the head. "Good boy. Wanna go play Gyromite?"
