Nope that's not it, Mickey appears always in certain boss battles if Sora dies, i think they're 4-5 overall and he doesn't appear in random battles.
He appears at least twice in Hollow Bastion (the basement and the ball room) and somebody else might remember the other locations if need to be answered.

A.) The reason for the placement of the "X" in the naming process of a new Organization XIII member has to do with Master Xehanort, one of Xemnas's original two personas, and his fascination with the legendary X-Blade. As Xemnas regained memories of Master Xehanort's past, he remembered the X-Blade, and incorporated the "X" into Organization XIII.
