    Re: JRPG or WRPG

You may want to provide a little more content to your post by providing an answer to your question as well.

As for me I'll let my library speak for itself. I own 100+ JRPGs and 6 WRPGs.

I find JRPGs far more enjoyable experience than WRPGs, in part because I find JRPGs to be a lot more quirky and different. They often tend not to take them as seriously as WRPGs at least appear. And a lot of times it seems like WRPGs over promise and under deliver. In the end there is a charm that JRPGs have that WRPG lack and because they are not JRPGs will never be able to obtain.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

I... like a healthy mix of the two. Most of my games are JRPGs though, and I tend to prefer them over WRPGs.

I like good stories in my games, and JRPGs deliver that so much better. I find the stories in WRPGs to lack consistency, and when they're done, they don't seem to have a lasting impact on me. Games like Fallout 3 and, Morrowind and Oblivion were all wonderfully done, and I still love to play them, but the story had no depth, it was over before it started, and I didn't find myself attached to any of the characters.

JRPGs are much more quirky, and convey much more emotion in the story they tell. Also, character development is much more vast, and interesting because you're more attached the characters and their relationships with the rest of the cast.

In the not too distant past I would have said JRPGs without hesitation, but these days I've actually been leaning more towards newer WRPGs. If talking the lot from the past few decades, it's still a definete JRPG preference for me, but no newer JRPGs have taken up as much of my time as newer WRPGs like Dragon Age and Fallout 3.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

I've only played a few WRPGs, now that I think of it. The vast majority of the games I do play are JRPGs. It's not really on purpose so much as most WRPGs don't appeal to me as strongly as the JRPGs do. I've noticed a lot of the WRPGs involve creating your own character and tend to be open world and while I enjoy them occasionally, it's like UE said. The story just doesn't impact me as much. Could be because I started out playing JRPGs.

JRPGs are Japanese Role Playing Games and WRPGs are Westen Role Playing Games. In other words, JRPGs are made in Japan and WRPGs are made in America.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

for technical purposes of old final fantasy games, i find jrpgs have good systems but not characters and stories. a lot of plot and character templates get rehashed and over saturated.

for art and entertainment purposes. i love Wrpg's , not a fan of the designs sometimes, but the characters are interesting and have me guessing more on the story and plot line.

but im a fickle gamer, japanese games i find i get pissed when the japanese culture mashes itself up with others and claim its an original idea. nice medievil game and all of a sudden a japanese banner wearing messenger runs up to you acting like a goofy idiot really throws off the seriousness which its trying to prevail. there is only so much cheese one can take before you become lactose intolerant.

Wrpg's i find in all of these games they take great people and kill them off. great, i just finally saved captain picard from some assassins and you go and kill him anyways. jerks. a lot of death which makes sense but why can't it be like classic star trek where the designated red shirts die. cause now im stuck with the red shirts while the interesting and intriguing characters are dead.

but hey that is me. people have different taste. people like cheese others like gore, other like fluffy kittens, saving the world for the good of puppies, christmas and other nice things. i like to create and play, hence why i always come back to sim city. i create a character and play with that. if i can't create then the game can get boring quick.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

I can't really make a difference between the 2. I mean the difference between 2 JRPG games can be just as much already, when made by different companies.

I'm very picky when it comes to games. But I like both, when they are made well. So I guess no matter where it comes from, I'll always judge every game on its own.
JRPG games that I own and loved are the Final Fantasy, Xenosaga and Phantasy Star series.
WRPG games that I loved are the Bioware games like Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars - Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age - Origins.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

I prefer JRPGs as they, to me, are more "unique". WRPGs tend to be based on a certain style, kind of influenced from D&D. I like how different JRPGs are. From JRPGs have come unique stories that I feel are more the focus than in WRPGs, memorable characters (most definitely), and uniquely, beautiful environments (Zanarkand).

I'm not that into creating a character based upon a generalization of what I read. I read fantasy books, mostly, because I don't want to read something that takes place in the "present" or near future as I am living in that enviroment - that book would be not that special. With fantasy books I am taken to a very different world; the fantasy books I tend to read are "high" fantasy". I play JRPGs because they are differnt than the books I read, so in the end I get a diversity in what I read and play.

Being able to do anything in a game doesn't make it sooooo much better to me. I am a RPG player that plays for the story, most of the times, I equate RPGs to playing a book. A book has a set course with set characters and I watch/experience their journey.

I prefer JRPG's over WRPG's. They just have so much more substance. Plus the fact that they are usually out of the ordinary are great.

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

All my life i had been playing JRPGs, the onlything remotely close to a WRPG i had ever played were games from the Megami Tensei series.

I took a big leap of faith when i decided to buy Fallout 3, i bought and enjoyed the hell out of it lol. it has since become one of my favorate games ever. after that i heard of a new WRPG coming out, "Dragon Age Origins." i desided to give it a try considering how much i enjoyed Fallout 3. I understand that alot of people may enjoy this game, but i could not stand to play it, i felt like i had no direction to go. i understand that nobody wants a completely linear game, but i would like to know what im doing. and also for a HIGH DEFFINITION game, the graffics game me a big headache. it also makes me loose faith in the new fallout game coming out soon that is beingdeveloped by bioware.

considering my little mini rant, i think its safe to say that i enjoy JRPS more

    Re: JRPG or WRPG

The Shin Megami Tensei series is firmly a JRPG. I would say that Demon's Souls gets closer to being a WRPG than anything from the Shin Megami Tensei series.

But I can agree that Dragon Age is nothing special. The only reasons I tried it out was because it was supposed to be the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and I was hoping that meant it would be sort of like the ones of the PS2, which very fun, but it wasn't. The other reason is that I've been saying Bioware games are doing things wrong for a while, so I wanted to actually play one of them to say that I could hold that opinion for having played one of their game. So it is quite unlikely I'll be buying anymore Bioware games until they make significant improvements in a number of failing areas. The only saving grace in Dragon Age was that the character conversations out of cutscenes were very enjoyable and I really enjoy Claudia Black. When the characters talking between themselves is more interesting the actual story and whats going on that's a problem.

A side note, Dragon Age is also the only game that I starting looking around for art bugs. >.> It was the only game I've played that I had trouble turning off my tester developed skills.

Any chance you want to back that up with examples?

    This.

JRPGs began to bore me a few years ago. They just seem to rehash the same old thing these days. Even with an unoriginal plot, the freedom associated with WRPGs gives them legs*. I think I was turned the second I discovered that I was able to steal people's silverware in Morrowind.

I loved going around in fallout 3 with my dog; dogmeat. the only thing i really hated about the ending is that you could not use the robot or the super mutant followers to turn on the machine. its either you or the daughter of the knights of steel.
like come on your a bloody super mutant, you absorb radiation like it was your freakin job.
