Games you try to be good at...

So I've recently just spent about 2 days with playing Custom Robo for Gamecube right. Well I beat the story, jumped into The Grand Battle mode, and started getting gold trophies in some of the tournaments. Then I hit several tournaments where the guys just straight up kick my ass. I've played over and over, trying many different things, but man in a way the CPU has more skills than me

That just brings me to this dreadful question.

Have you ever played a game you tried to be a master at but always fall short? Was there always something you just couldn't get past even with a guide?

I really wanted the last Robo in this game but damn... my skills must be limited ....

It hurts a gamer's pride when there is something he just can't get past...

    ~EDIT~
I played Custom Robo a couple year's back.

    Far Cry 2, haha. I was good on my own, especially when I played online. I'd win a lot of the rounds when I played for a few hours and such. But then I always sucked when I was playing with or against friends. I guess I tried too hard to impress them or something, and failed. ^^;

In White Knight Chronicles, I get worried that everyone thinks I suck. I guess I kind of do, but that's my own fault for not building correctly. Just have to learn from my mistakes and work on my build when I rebirth next!

Otherwise, I pretty much rock any game I play in my own way. I don't aspire to be the best.

    Probably Guild Wars.
I can never get my build quite right.
And I end up being a burden in missions.

    Another big one was WoW.
Again i was always a burden.
People always wanted me to Tank. (I was a warrior.) But My character was just better for DPS.

I try not to in certain games, but man there are just times when I wanna try and do everything in a game, I think it might be in reality I was never a fighting game type of person, I stuck to RPGs mostly. I did however kick major ass in Bloody Roar Primal Fury (GCN) and Killer Instinct Gold (N64).

I went through that exact thing with FFXI, I was more or less a complete badass with a drg/blu job combo. I rarely got invites because people started being too picky.

I think the main thing was I played to be good at what I did and not just to finish whatever we was doing which is about 90% of people still playing FFXI

I'm okay with single player stuff. I always find my way to play and have fun at the same time. With multiplayer/online games it's a different story. I'm always looking to improve on fighting games/FPS and other competitive ones. My current game is Starcraft 2, which I've been playing since the beta came out, and there's still so much to work on. It's a blast.

I stream Bloodborne, FFXIV, and occasionally other games.

I try to be good at puzzle/logic games, such as Professor Layton or the Ace Attorney games, but more often than not when I get stuck on something, I look up the solution online.

Other than those types, I don't really try to be the best in a game. If I'm having fun with it, then that's really all that matters to me.

I always think I rock at FPS games, but then I get destroyed online. It's pretty disheartening

I always hated it when you spend so much time tightening your skills, and then just when you think you couldn't get any better, you play someone who is a million times better than you. I do that with fighting games, but more times than not, I am the one better than you (:<

I played this one game once, I really can't recall the name of it, but it was a third person survival horror game, I believe it was Silent Hill 3? Well, I was stuck on this one floor and I couldn't find what to do, I ran around that whole place looking and looking around to find the stupid item that I needed to continue, and I failed soo badly at it, and not even 3 days before I got the game i watched a Let's Play of it on youtube by L0rdVega or somethin like that, so I thought I knew exactly what to do, but I didnt, I was soo confused, so I gave up....
    Final Fantasy games played:1,2,3,6,7,9,10,12,13
    Final Fantasy games beaten:7,10,13

I really didnt get too much into 1-3, I got about halfway through 6, didnt play 9 that much, and played 12 at a friends house.

Even though I was probably always the best out of my friends in the end, I never totally triumphed over Super Smash Bros. Melee. I never learned to wave dash or shine, and I never beat the game on a harder difficulty than normal, I don't think. And it doesn't count if you have to continue! (Though I did complete the fifty trials or whatever. Ganondorf, Giga Bowser and Mewtwo were a bitch.) Don't think I ever really tried to excel at any other game. Anyhoo...

This also reminds me of the Dynasty Warriors Gundam Franchise... why is it when you add robots to Dynasty Warriors the game suddenly gets extremely hard. I consider myself fairly adept in the Dynasty Warriors Franchise, hell I've even been known to beat it a couple of times on Master and Chaos difficulty but for some reason, I just got my ass handed to me on Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2 on the EASY difficulty >.>

Opposite here. I found the game easier than the main DW series. I'm pretty good at DW as a whole, but the other day, after playing a lot of DW Gundam, I decided to put DW 3 in. Got beat pretty bad

anything in the FPS or MOBA genre, I work at to become a better player. I don't mind winning and losing and never have a problem with it because it helps me to become a better thinker, but it does get frustrating when you lose due to teammates that are just flat out baaad. In those kind of games there is only so much you can do and the individual skill can only get you so far, but what really matters is how well you play as a team and your overall coordinated efforts, which can cause big love/hate relationships for individually skilled gods at such games like myself. zz

I try to be pretty good to great in rhythm games like: DDR, ITG, Pump It Up, Para Para, & Guitar Hero, but there is 1 game that I cannot get any good at - Beatmania. Konami poorly did the difficulty in the game since even on easy mode some songs would be 7 or higher. Hell, even at 5 the songs were too much for me. The notes are too small and when the screen gets cluttered it is too much for my eyes to read; I am good at reading the arrows/notes in other rhythm games. One of the biggest challenges is the 7 key turn-table; you can use only 5-keys but that is difficult. Plus trying to spin and press the correct keys = nightmare.

    Main series FFs Beaten - FF: 4x, FFII: 3x, FFIII: 3x, FFIV: 3x, FFV: 3x, FFVI: 4x, FFVII: 5x, FFVIII: 5x, FFIX: 3x, FFX: 4x, FFXII: 3x, FFXIII: 2x, FFXV: 2x

I remember always trying to be good at Formula 1 97 on PSX and never got good at it
Mastering Crash Bandicoot 1 or just getting the secret levels was something i never could do, probably the hardest challenge i've encountered ever and tried so much
