'The Evil Within' - Shinji Mikami's new survival horror title. Trailer + Screenshots

Bethesda Softworks officially announced earlier this week the planned release of "The Evil Within", a new survival horror game developed by Tango Gameworks under the direction of renowned game designer and studio head, *Shinji Mikami.

“We’re incredibly proud to announce The Evil Within,” said Mikami. “My team and I are committed to creating an exciting new franchise, providing fans the perfect blend of horror and action.”

Mikami has developed the game with his Tokyo based studio, Tango Gameworks which Bethesda Softworks parent Zenimax later acquired. The Evil Within is Tango studio's first game which has been in development since 2010, originally under the working title of project 'Zwei'.

According to Publisher Bethesda, The Evil Within’s “[highly-crafted] environments, horrifying anxiety, and an intricate story weave together to create an immersive world that will bring players to the height of tension.”

The Evil Within, in development for the XBOX360, PlayStation3, PC and next generation consoles, is slated for release in 2014. The announcement was accompanied by a live-action trailer that was first unveiled on IGN. Watch it below.

Ahead of Monday’s IGN details update, Bethesda Japan has gone live with first story details and a list of the new survival horror title's key features.

    Story

When Detective Sebastian and his partner rush to the scene of a gruesome mass murder, a mysterious, powerful force is lying in wait for them. Witnessing the killing of fellow police officers one after another, Sebastian is then attacked and loses consciousness. Waking up in a land where monsters are wandering about, Sebastian has to fight his way through a world of death and its close friend madness in order to understand what’s going on. Sebastian has to face his fears in order to survive on a journey to discover what lies in the shadows of that mysterious force.

    Key Features

A Return to Pure Survival Horror: From the father of the survival horror genre, Shinji Mikami. He appears once again as the director of this game, one which makes your blood run cold, but heats you right back up. Players must survive on limited resources, experiencing that supreme match of action and horror, that indescribable terror. To survive in an afflicted world, your anxiety and nerves will be pushed to the edge.
Brutal Traps and Enemies with Puzzles: While struggling to survive, you’ll have to face indescribable terror, cruel traps, and sly mechanisms. Players can die in a trap all too easily, however, at times they can turn them against enemies.
In an Unstable World, Not All Horrors are in Plain Sight: The player is driven into a corner as the world distorts and warps according to mysterious and evil horrors. The scenery: hallways, walls, doors, rooms, buildings, and even nature, all transforming in real time based on the player’s actions. And the threats keep coming from all directions.
A Supernova of Horror: By setting one foot in this world weaved from lush backdrops, characters with personality, and a polished story, players will be sucked in, willing or unwilling, tension and anxiety rapidly mounting. When that fear is smashed and conquered, you can experience the bliss that can only be found in The Evil Within.

It's hard to say anything concrete based on a few screenshots and live action trailer, I'm looking forward to actual gameplay footage, mostly because we need another survival horror title ever since both Resident Evil and Silent Hill went downhill. As someone said on IGN this may turn out to be a huge **** you letter from Shinji to Capcom for messing with his franchise, and I hope indeed it is.

If anyone can fix the horror genre it's Shinji Mikami. I've been keeping tabs on this game n all updates since 2010 due to my complete n utter frustration n disappointment with this generation n it's lack of pure survival horror games. The reality of the genre is that developers have thoroughly exploited it to turn an easy profit cause lets face it, we've seen enough games on the market that involve hordes of zombies at this point its become a numbing experience. Focus less on the "game" aspects like dispatching waves of enemies n more on the concept of fear itself while weeding out the tedium n repetition that we've seen in the genre over the last few years.

I read the article with that top comment.Yes, Mikami is so dead on about the current state of the genre. Companies have been disregarding it for years including Konami. From all the info released so far about the game, Mikami is bringing back almost everything from old RE games plus more. Indie developers have done a great job at trying to keep the genre alive, only wished they received more attention rather than being drowned in the noise craptastic action 'horror' games make by major game devs. Bring on A Machine For Pigs as well! I have seen enough of Mikami's new title to know that I'll preorder it as soon as I can. Those screenshots, the setting, along with the knowledge of Shinji Mikami, the man whose worked on so many of my all time favourite games/franchises at the helm of it all is all the reassurance I need. I'll support the hell out of this game.

Also.."There is no multi player of any kind, no co–op either, it's purely single player"

Is it that hard Capcom/EA?!!....Is it that hard?!?!?!!!!

    FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A true survival horror game which is purely single player.

Looks like we'll have survival horror back. Thankyou Mikami!!! Bye bye Resident Evil and Dead Space. The King is Back.

I wouldn't be so harsh on EA, sure they ****ed up Dead Space 3, though Dead Space 1&2 were pretty good and that's far more than Capcom and Konami managed to do for survivor horror this generation, not to mention Dead Space as a series is nowhere near on the same level as Resident Evil and Silent Hill, thus mediocre Dead Space 3 didn't piss me off as much as Resident Evil 5&6, and in a way even Resident Evil 4.

This sounds like the Dark Souls effect, a reaction the the CoD model.

The first Dead Space game is fairly good for a current gen game though it's far from the original 4 RE and first 3 Silent Hill games and I completely agree that they should be strictly single play. I saw the trailer the other day and though I don't have high hopes I will keep my eye out regarding this game.

Both Dead Space 1&2 are miles ahead of Resident Evil 4 as far as survivor horror goes, I have hard time understanding how anyone found that game scary let alone the best survivor horror out there. It lacked suspense and tension it predecessors had, not to mention barely any jump scares, plus Ashley, that bitch alone sinks it down a notch. I agree with everything else though.
