    Earthbound

I noticed that this was recently listed for sale on the new nintendo 3ds store and I have always known this game has been widely praised, but I wasnt sure why. The trailer looked interesting, but if it wasnt for the critical acclaim, I might not feel the same.

Can anyone who has played it highlight why its so critically acclaimed?

its quirky and fun, had a similar dragon quest menu aesthetic with the game being anything but.

the game was very different in terms of story for it's time. without spoiling anything, it seems pretty lighthearted but there are quite a few dark overtones, especially as you get to near the conclusion. to this day there is still debate on some of the final themes of the game.

characters are fun, and i'd say theyre a bit relatable to the average player, at least moreso than some knight in full platemail like other traditional rpgs are.

the game is a bit easy in terms of difficulty but the battles are fun, the puzzles require some thinking but arent too hard.

the music is 10/10 and is a somewhat important theme of the game as well.

just the tip of the iceberg that i can think of, but yeah its an alltime favorite of mine

Then again this one is kind of on the outs with me if she doesn't straighten up and fly right so that means I will be back in it for the thrill of the kill. Got some in the reserves. Even got a rePETEr (<---- like that ay? AYYYYY?) on the back burner.

Block: I do like the rePETEr except it kinda makes it sound like you're going to pork Pete. No homo.

It was probably the first social commentary in a video game that I can distinctly recall. It was wacky and irreverent, but in a very disarming way, where all you could do was laugh.

It was a solid game too, and definitely should be played/ replayed with age

Not to hype it, but I really enjoy it. The reason why it has so much praise is basically that it isn't like any other game before it and it has dialogue that holds up pretty well today, it's one of those ahead of it's time games, not graphically, but in concept and all the pop culture references. It also breaks the rule for possible copyright stuff, and has quite a ton for a video game of its time. It is a ride, it starts slow at the beginning but it picks up later on.

It is also game where you hear up crows, wild hounds, mushrooms, road signs, vehicles, hippies, and zombies. While it has its light-heartedness, the story gets deep at the same time and can be very serious and does have its scary elements too. If I were to compare this to anything, it's like if Charlie Brown were an rpg, it would be something like this game.

Check out the gameplay on YouTube and see what you think, I personally think it's worth playing. It's all up to you.
If you do get into earthbound and beat it, I encourage you to check out its predecessor earthbound beginnings if that ever hits 3ds systems.

Okays guys, I bought it and started it the other night. It seems really cool so far. I found the baseball bat in my sisters room and twice now my mother has told me to chang eout of my jammies before I went outside. Meteor crash landed, everyone behaves strangely (not sure if game is just quirky or if meteor has something to do with it) but im really liking the game at the moment.

Any hints of tips for first time players?

    My tips for you are:

    - Do not rely on the auto fight option, not a very smart move (and don't use it for boss fights either.)

    - Make sure to heal accordingly when you get low on HP, it's pretty rough when you start out so expect to be using PSI Lifeup alpha often in the beginning.

    - If you see a butterfly, try to touch it because it restores your Psychic Points some.

    - You get money in your ATM from battles you win, try to be conservative on how much you withdraw from your ATM because when you die, you lose half of the cash you carry.

    - There will be times the main character will get homesick. To gauge it check your status by going to menu > status. If homesick, go to a store, hospital, or hotel phone and call your mom and that will help the main character overcome that status.

    - My last tip for you is to explore everywhere in the places you're in, and talk to people, you'll get a lot out of the game just by hearing what they have to say and you might find secrets along the way!

Those are the essentials, hopefully you have the rest down and I hope you enjoy your playthrough of EarthBound, it's definitely a ride.

Thanks for the tips! If anyone else has anymore, please feel free to contribute.

Also, can you tell me what the 'homesick' status effect actually does to your character?

Save often, especially if you're on an emulator and can do it whenever. Also, prepare to have a bad time with grinding. It's tedious and sometimes feels strangely unfair. Like 3 criticals in a row from common enemies with no chance to heal. Hence the constant saving.

Also, personal choice, but I don't think the slingshot is as useful as the bat you have beforehand. I tended to miss more than hit, and my criticals were lacking.

Lastly, don't use attack magic when mushroomed. It doesn't end well.
