Okay, so whilst I was searching these forums today I realised that we have had a few topics on peoples best game. We even have on our profiles our favourite Final Fantasy. Then I thought it would a fun idea to find out what game would win if they all got the vote. If I miss any major games types- let me know.

I guess the first stage would be to pick groups. I came up with:-

EDIT: Before somebody says that Tactics and Strategy should be in the same category; I know, but I want clear boundaries between certain games. I don't want Rise of Nations competing against Final Fantasy Tactics. This is because the game-play is clearly different.

Best Fighting Game: Super Smash Bros. Melee. Played this game to death back in '05, loved it. The only fighting game I've ever done that with, really.
Best FPS: Fallout 3. With Bioshock a close second. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, so my selection there would be a little small. However, those two are some of my favorite games ever, so...
Best RPG: The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. Don't think I've ever been so obsessed with another RPG, and it's my favorite genre. Feel like I'm leaving out a lot of JRPG's... Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, and the Mario RPG series come to mind.
Best Sports Based Game: NBA Jam. For the good ol' SNES. maybe the only sports game I ever liked...
Best Tactics Game: Final Fantasy Tactics. A challenging, yet awesome game.
Best Platformer: Super Metroid. Even though I haven't played it in years. Still one of the best.
Best Adventure Game: Crystalis. I should almost put a Zelda title here, and Crystalis also has RPG elements that might make it count more in that category, but I still love this game to death to this day.
Best Survival HorrorPass.
Best Point and Click Game: Full Throttle. Y'know, the one where you're a biker framed by Mark Hammel. Maybe the only one I've played aside from the Strong Bad one, but I liked it.
Best Puzzle-Based Game: Tetris Attack. Played it to death back in the day, and actually got pretty good at it.
Best Strategy Game: Warcraft II. I sunk so many hours into this game... over like a five year span. At least until 3 came out.

Best Final Fantasy Game: Final Fantasy 6. Best story, best cast of characters and use of said characters, best villain.
Best New Gen Game: Fallout 3. Tough choice, though.
Best Retro Game: Crystalis. Another tough choice.
Best Game Series: The Elder Scrolls.
Best Visual Effects in a Game (for its time): Pass.
Best Game Of All Time: Warcraft II. Says me.

Should we have a separate survival horror genre or should we class that stuff under adventure games? And I'm thinking maybe we should add puzzle games which can include games like Tetris and Peggle, but also old point and click adventure games (as I don't really like classing them with games like Zelda or God of War)? Just a thought. Oh! And also RTS?

Hmmm, very good points, Jin. I know where you're going with the point and click and I like... Puzzle-based is a bit of a closed catagory these day. Sure you have Tetris and Minesweeper and such but there aren't all that many. I guess I'll go for it, though. Okay then, I'll add your suggestions to mine. I'm also adding strategy games to include the likes of Age of Empires, Civilization, Command and Conquer and such.

Best Fighting Game - Tekken 2: I love this game, perhaps a hge stepping stone to what fighting games would become.
Best FPS - Rainbow Six: Probably not that popular, but I don't play FPS that much and it was basically, for me, out of Rainbow Six and Killzone, with R6 standing out more in my mind.
Best RPG - Final Fantasy VIII: In my opinion, the greatest game ever.
Best Sports Based Game - WWE Smackdown v Raw 2010: I don't even know whether professional wrestling is technically considered a sport, but WWE games are the only ones I play. This one is the best of the lot.
Best Tactics Game - Final Fantasy Tactics: Again, I don't play many of this genre, but I love FFT.
Best Platformer - Kirby's Dreamland: I had the toughest time picking out of my favourites. Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Pandemonium, Sonic, so many to choose. But I think Kirby is probably my favourite.
Best Adventure Game - Tomb Raider: It was the one that made the genre more popular than ever. A lot of games could come under the adventure umbrella, but TR stood out the most as the true adventure game.
Best Survival Horror - Resident Evil 2: No competition in my opinion. RE2 is the scariest game ever created and the pinnacle of the Survival Horror genre.
Best Point and Click Game - Broken Sword 2: The only one I've ever played. But it is a great game.
Best Puzzle-Based Game - Kula World: I used to play it for hours on end. Addictive, and that's what you want in a puzzle game.
Best Strategy Game - Command & Conquer: I don't know whether it is considered a tactical game, but it seems more strategy based. Again, I don't play many of these kind of games, but this one is good.

Best Final Fantasy Game - Final Fantasy VIII: While not everyone's choice for best FF, VIII is the one that will always be my favourite.
Best New Gen Game - Nier: It may have recieved some bad reviews, but I found this game refreshing, the story is endearing, and the characters are well put together. The greatest experience I've ever had on PS3.
Best Retro Game - Kirby's Dreamland: Standing out to me as the best retro game.
Best Game Series - Final Fantasy: I wanted to go with something different, but I felt like I couldn't.
Best Visual Effects in a Game (for its time) - Final Fantasy VIII: Truly awe inspiring when it came out. The backgrounds and FMV sequences were the best graphics on PS1.
Best Game Of All Time - Final Fantasy VIII: I truly believe it is this good. I will always think this too.

Okay, I think for ease of flow I'm going to set an end date on this. That way people know when stuff is happening. I'll put this in my first post with a red title.

Best Fighting Game: Hmm, rather difficult even if I'm not a fighting game fan. It would be rude to speak of a fighting game competition without adding Street Fighter II, which pretty much revolutionized the fighter concept. Or Mortal Kombat, daring enough so as to provide maturity to the game. Or heck, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which is considered one of the best crossover games ever.

Yet, if I can give only one vote, go to the very source of revolutionary fighting games: Guilty Gear. GG took what SF formed, MvC reformed, and became the game that others want to imitate. It's rich in all aspects; story, controls, gameplay, music, etc.

Best FPS: First and foremost, accept it. Halo will be mentioned at any moment. No offense to the ancient forerunners (Castle Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake), but one game tops them all. Quite probably the legendary FPS: GoldenEye 64. Even if it's outdated by now, it is one of the most innovative FPS ever made. Halo built upon what GoldenEye and the forerunners did, but definitely the latter stands on its own.

Though, I'll admit: it would be weird to see GoldenEye on the 360.

Best RPG: Whoo, now we got into the toughest category of them all. RPGs have grown to be quite wide, and while tactical RPGs have been separated, still there is a lot of overlap. Mostly: does this mean I have to consider console and computer classic RPGs, dungeon crawler RPGs and MU* (which are a bit more classic than the "classic" RPGs), as well as MMOs. So I'll make my choice of the three, and then go with the overall winner.

On console and computer "classic" RPGs, or Japanese RPGs (the ones we're accustomed to play), there is a LOT of competition. Especially if we deal with the full suite of RPGs: there's Final Fantasy VI for the Final Fantasy series, Breath of Fire III for Breath of Fire, Seiken Densetsu 3 for the Mana series, a veritable tie between Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song, Romancing SaGa 3 and SaGa Frontier for the SaGa series, Star Ocean 2 for the Star Ocean series, Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for the VP series, a tie between Tales of Phantasia and Tales of Destiny for the Tales of... series, and other assorted series-based games: Lufia II, Lunar: Eternal Blue, Parasite Eve, etc. Then, there's the stand-alone games, so to speak: Lost Odyssey comes to mind. However, if I were to choose on one overall game...darn, this is hard. There's a load of good games in there, and choosing one would be an insult for all others. Let's just say Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth and call it a day. Seriously. I would have chosen another one, but there are reasons why I must and there are reasons why I'll break with that later on.

As on dungeon-crawler RPGs and MU*, the so called Western RPGs, there is a LOAD of competition, but the choice is so blindingly easy I have no qualms to say about it. Dungeon crawler RPGs, at least their best incarnations, are games such as Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (sorry Morrowind fans), Wizardry VII, Ultima VI: The False Prophet (eerily close to a console RPG in execution, but it works better as a Western RPG and most if not all of the former incarnations hold much of the Western roots), and so on. Japan has caught with it, and has delivered such games as The Dark Spire for example: they ironically have kept the original concept of dungeon crawlers alive, while Elder Scrolls III and IV are the newest incarnation. But the overall winner? Etrian Odyssey, hands down. Excellent exploration, excellent character building, and so forth. Seriously, even if just for the shots at pop culture, you should get it.

And finally, with MMOs (I presume those are the "point and click", but there are key differences), I will be VERY frank with this. I cannot stand World of Warcraft, but for one reason it is the most popular MMO, thus it is mentioned. I have a special place for Ragnarok Online, and quite probably would have been the default winner, but... Maybe it is because I've played it a lot nowadays or because I really enjoy it, but Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited takes the lead on this one. It is partly a clone of games such as Final Fantasy XI and WoW, but it has two points in its favor...let's say three: one, it is based on the Dungeons & Dragons rules, so it has a lot of push in that regard (and it helps when you don't have a gaming group); second, it is based on the Eberron campaign setting which is filled with awesome backgrounds and a great balance in likes (use of magitech, pulp fiction feel, half the world is mysterious and unexplored, yet the other half is classic D&D at its core); third, it is less retarded than WoW and much more sane than the core D&D 3.5 rules.

As for the overall winner...that one I'll reserve.

Best Sports Based Game: no answer on this one. Very few games played, and not a buff so as to get interested on a sports game (read: almost none aside from a soccer game on the SNES). I'd go with random racing game at any point, say Gran Turismo and call it a day. But really, I would rather ignore it.

Best Tactics Game: Hard one to pin down, but it remains firmly within Matsuno's grasp. Don't get me wrong: there are great tactical RPGs such as Front Mission 3, Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, and even some odd acquired tastes such as Dungeons & Dragons Tactics. But the clear winner is Final Fantasy Tactics, specifically in its War of the Lions format. I prefer the later character development systems, but FFT is complete.

I would make a special point on best game of a very specific and very clear series: the Super Robot Wars series. Each game attempts to top the other on everything, but it's insanely hard to determine which has the greatest pull. Usually, I leave it to Super Robot Wars: Original Generations, Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 and Super Robot Wars A, preferably the Portable edition. However, when placed against FFT, the competition fades away: FFT is too different from other tactics games, one that only another Matsuno game can compare (such as Tactics Ogre)

Oh, and for the record: Shining Force >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Fire Emblem. At least in my opinion.

Best Platformer: Sorry Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World and other Mario platformer games, Sonic the Hedgehog and sequels, or Crash Bandicoot/Spyro/etc. The best platformer type has a fan name, and that is a Metroidvania. And of course, what better to define with the games that trascend (IMO) the genre: Super Metroid and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. And from those, Castlevania: SOTN is the clear winner. Though; Super Metroid was very, very close, and Metroid Prime trails behind even if it is a 3D platformer.

Best Adventure Game: No need to say what Lemmy from F@nboys says much better than I do. There is no adventure game like Legend of Zelda, and there is no LoZ as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Or no three better Zelda games than The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Best Survival Horror: Psh. You looked at here, and thought "Resident Evil, hands down", right?

WRONG.

There is one winner. That winner is Silent Hill. No other survival horror game is like Silent Hill. No matter how much Capcom tries to or how popular it is, Konami has that one, period.

Mention deserves an old and forgotten game that has been thrown into the mists of time. Alone in the Dark. Curse you, Uwe Boll, CURSE YOU!!!

Best Point and Click Game: Uh...I presume this must be an MMO, but the definition is pretty wide. Games such as Ragnarok Online are point and click games, games such as Starcraft and Warcraft are point and click games, and then there's the pure point-and-click games such as Myst. But you won't live until you've played one long-forgotten game, one that truly encompasses what is point-and-click and also ridiculous hardness: Shadowgate. Yes, that almost forgotten NES game. That insanely hard NES game.

Best Puzzle-Based Game: Hmm, which may it be? Could it be Bejeweled, which tops the list on best-known games for non-gamers? Or could it be...let's say...oh, let's cut the chase and go for the meat. If there is a puzzle game that is legendary, that is Tetris. Easy, addictive, enduring, and known to pretty much every single individual that has had contact with a computer or even a calculator I believe.

Best Strategy Game: Hmm, this one is expected to be between Warcraft and Starcraft, since Blizzard knows how to make strategy games. But so does Sid Meier, and thus the clear winner is Civilization, any of them but particularly the one you have access to. Close ones may be Age of Empires or Empire Earth or Medieval: Total War, or even the classic Command and Conquer.

Best Final Fantasy Game: As I said before, I'm going to do something I rarely do. Everyone knows that I love this game, and that's clear. However, I rarely put the game on any "Top X games" since it has already been surpassed, several times, by other games. However, what makes Final Fantasy VI the best Final Fantasy game, at least in my opinion? There's a lot of things; one of the greatest villains (Kefka, of course), one of the best stories around... There are things that are right now obsolete, such as the character development (I prefer class-based such as with Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy Tactics and the Tactics sequels), and the graphics and sound have also been done better. And, comparing FFVI and FF Tactics is almost sinful: quite probably two of the best FF games around, and one could easily topple the other. Final Fantasy V comes pretty close, and Final Fantasy IV pretty distant. And no, I don't hate Final Fantasy VII, but it's not my favorite game nor on my top five; the honor of worst Final Fantasy IMO goes to Final Fantasy IX. Pretty much the only game I haven't dared to repeat (and yes, I repeated FFVII, and I could repeat FFVIII).

Best New Gen Game: Haven't done much next-gen games, and with mostly having an X-Box 360, a DS and a PSP around I can't say much. I could say Lost Odyssey for the 360 (along with Fable II), but I will go a bit backwards, to the X-Box. And I will prize the dare of Molyneux for making Fable. It's not what it promises, but it's kinda underrated when you ignore Molyneux's ego.

Best Retro Game: Ironically, such as I have done for the Next-Gen game, I shall do with the Retro game. Seriously: there are great games such as Star Fox, Super Mario Bros. 3, Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past and several other to mention (oh, I won't forget Contra 3: The Alien Wars either). But, if I were to mention a game that really feels "retro" and it's awesome, I must go with a next-gen system. Curious?

If I tell you that Breath of Death VII: The Beginning is the best Retro game, you won't believe it. But it does. Oh, goodness, it does! It really revises and redefines an Indie game, even if it's insanely short. Technically, it shouldn't qualify since it's an indie game for a next-gen console, but screw that; BoD VII is more retro than most games, except perhaps Donkey Kong, Pac-Man and... Pong.

Best Game Series: Nope, it's not Final Fantasy. Nope, it's not Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. No, it's not Mario, Sonic or any other platformer. No, it's not Zelda. It's Super Robot Wars, boasting over 50 games in existence and each of them is a blast to play (some more than others). Though, the fact that every single one of these games aside from three are in Japanese makes me cringe.
