By default, the PM system will not save copies of your outbound messages. To change this, just go into your options menu and scroll down to the Private Messaging options. The last choice is a box to save outbound messages into your Sent Items folder.
(I have 1153 items in my Sent Items folder, so there shouldn't be an issue with the server.)
