Final fantasy fan.
(some spoilers)
Well 7 was the better game for a number of reasons, but that doesn't take much away from 6. 6 ranks 4th on my list behind 7, 8, and 10, and just above 9, but 7 is better for a number of reasons.
1st - It's legendary for its successful move to 3D, including its use of video and far more dramatic presentations of things such as Summons and magic.
2nd - VII introduced the best of any side games and quests both before or since. Chocobo breading, which led to the finding of several powerful spells, equipment, secrets, & summons. Chocobo racing was a blast at the Golden Saucer. Also at the Saucer were a number of other games that you could play, some that allowed you to relive other elements of the game.
3rd - Big Moments - I'll see your Opera House scene, and raise you Aeries dying!! And I'll go all in with Aeries showing back up to raise Holy from the earth in time to save the world from Meteor. WOW! Great stuff on VII's part.
4th - The battle system and Materia upgrade attachments were far more fun and inventive than VI's straight forward version of leveling. VI had a great array of power sets, but there wasn't as much decision making to be done. Materia was just more interesting esspecially since the materia itself leveled with you.
* Now characters I do give to VI. VI had a wide array of variently powered characters, all of whom I loved. Of course I consider VII to have the 2nd best characters of any game, so it doesn't loose much there. I love everybody in that game.

I really enjoyed playing both of these games but personally I find FF VI to be much better game. First of all FF VI has amazing story, ten times more interesting than FF VII and to tell you the truth I didn't find FF VII story to be anything special but it's not the worst, that's for sure. I didn't liked characters from FF VII, some of them were really annoying and I never really understood the main character Cloud. Sephiroth was the easiest and lamest boss I've ever seen, and I really expected more from him. He truly disappointed me. Unlike FF VII every character from FF VI was superb, and neither one of them was annoying which I find to be really rare for any FF game. Even those who didn't have anything much to do with the story were OK. I really liked Kefka, evil, insane, the boss who did succeed to rule the world at least for a short while. He was quite a challenge unlike Sephiroth. And there lies the whole problem with FF VII, it was way too easy. Even tho there are some things that I didn't like in FF VII I really like that game and I enjoyed playing it but I think that FF VI was better game but that's only my opinion.
