Ok so We have a lot of options for this I know. What I'm asking is ether for general things like random battles or being able to buy spells or specific things like The summonings in Final Fantasy 10 or limit breaks in Final Fantasy 7.
For me I really miss the world maps from the first 9 games. I liked being able to fly my air ship how I wanted.
Wooh, this is a grand scope of things to pick from wow. If it had to be just one thing though, I really love the job system, still love their games without it, but I wish they'd bring it back like the good ol' days.
Although I am right there with ur feeling on the world maps, loved em.
My fav has got to be the optional superbosses like Yiazmat from FF12 and ruby weapon from FF7.
It gave you a really exciting challenge. Something most final story bosses didn't have.

I really like side quests, and I don't mean, just collect a bunch of stuff quests, or jumping rope 1000 f'ing times quests, but ones that are really detailed and required some story elements and follow up.
Like the alien encounter quest from 8 or the lake quest from the same game
chocobo raising and racing from 7 was really complex, especially going to buy the right greens and then traveling the world to find the secret materia afterwards, not to mention the gold saucer
even little ones like the letters you carried between the man & woman from ff 6 really opened up that world a lot.
But as stated, jumping rope & lightening bolts,,,,,,,, PASS!
Pretty much all of them honestly, I liked it in tactics alot, heck I liked the system in all 3 of them a lot, don't think I really weigh one above the other.
I miss Limit Breaks from FF7, the Trance from FF9 and most importantly the materia system from FF7. Materia i think was the best way to advance a character in FF terms.
Guys, let's all get in our whale, and fly into the sky, so high, to get to the moon. That's right, the moon. Final Fantasy IV, I remember the sheer joy of learning I could go on the moon. The music on the moon was also pretty good/hilarious.
I also liked V's job system, I spent hours maxing it out before bosses, since for some reason, I love grinding. So I mastered many jobs, it was worth it.
I loved how on FF IV you could go to the moon. I remember (since I played FFVII before IV) I had a dream where I flew to outerspace in the Highwind and fought a super weapon monster that traveled the galaxy randomly. (Kinda like Ultimate Weapon on the planet)
I do miss the old world maps alot, I liked random encounters that you could see. Like weapons on FFVII, I still have to close my eyes when going underwater for fear that Emerald Weapon will spawn right in front of me! X(
Still, my favorite game play componet was class system. I don't mind having specific charecters but I liked classes alot more. FFV is the best for this in my opinion, because if you don't like it you can change it at your lisure. It was awesome! (Galuf + Monk+ Berserker + Samurai = Greatest attack power ever! lolz)
