what weapon do you think the main character needs

ok though ive lost all hope in FF ever since FF 12(give me bad rep if u want ive said my peace and i stand by it), what weapon do you think square need to give their main charcter that that havent given them before? And yes, i know some of the characters can switch weapons, im talking about perminant weapons

I personaly think we need to see a character with a spear. Out of all the classes in FF dragoon/lancer has to be the strongest. Also the spear is my fav weapon.

What weapon? Hmm... Book. Yes, a book. As strange as it is, a mage needs to have that. A staff is too annoying, and a book is much more unique. Like how Zexion uses the pages to attack from Kingdom Hearts, or how Leon summons a Valkyrie to attack from Star Ocean. =D

@ Fate - I like the idea of a book. A lead mage, and a really powerful one. You know they could throw in some spells we've not seen before in the series and do it with a lead character who is some uber powerful magician. I'd go for that.

@ Larick - A spear lead character. You know I have liked character like Kain, Freya, and Kimiari if you leveled him up with strength. They're fun characters capable of unique moves. Yeah I could deal with a spear lead. Make him a fisherman or something. Seriously. A whaler.

We not only have 1 but now 2 mains with a gunblade. And in FFXIII someone even uses a lawnmower (Nomchan). I think that's all we ever need.

I also think a book is cool. Like Klarth.

Weapons that would be cool for a main (or just anyone) are Urumi and Meteor Hammer.
And it would beyond hilarious having someone use a flying guillotine.

Both idea's sound good to me.

I know the book works, if you've played Disgaea 3 (Ps3 only) then your arch rival, the black mage, uses her spell book to attck and cast spells. And granted, in most FF games,Disgaea games Spear grant incredible attack power and Unique moves, However i wouldn't like to see the sword replaced :/

I'm going to have to go with a spear, I have always wanted to see a main hero with a spear. I think after a whole bunch of guys with swords, a spear might be a nice break from them. plus I really like the idea of a book too though.

I just don't understand how you lost all hope in FF since FF12. I thought it was far and away the best of the series, and I look at that in a variety of ways.

I thought the Gambit system was excellent, and the most fun battle system of any game.

I thought the characters were solid, not as good as VI, VII, or even IV, but better than V, IX, VIII, and of course I.

I felt the license board was a major improvement over the Sphere Grid, and superior to any other attempts at character leveling including the job systems of previous games.

The move away from random battles I thought was done with a tremendous level of success.

Also details like voice acting and the interaction with summons were all much improved IMO.

The use of loot to sell for money was a much more realistic take on how to get $$ and added to overall immersiveness of the game. Likewise the expansiveness of the towns, and the little side quests and hunts, made the world feel much more alive than in any other previous game, where towns felt as though they were populated by 10 total people. The world just feels more alive in this game than in any other.

Mostly I just don't find any place to fault this game. VIII lacked in characters, IX for me lacked in side quests and freedom of movement, all of the early games lacked a lot of detail, X was simply too linear and without much in the way of exploration.

But XII pretty covers all bases and takes what in my own opinion was a big step forward into the future of the series. It was not the same old, same old, and I thought that was good.

Robert Jordan's "The Wheel of Time" series? Well one of the main characters in that series has a somewhat unique weapon which would be really cool for a main character in FF to have.

Think of it as being a quarterstaff with a sword blade on one end of it. So it would essentially be a spear, but it has more of a balance to it, so that it could be used defensively. That way, you can have a good offensive power behind it, but also have some decent defense as well. That's been my thing with two handed weapons...good offense....lame defense. Some of the katanas or ninja swords add more evasion, but still...there's something to be said for standing put, and showing some blocks.

The quarterstaff-sword-spear hybrid could work very nicely.

I don't think a main character needs any particular type of weapon for the game to be successful. If anything, I think the weapon a character chooses to wield should be something that fits their personality. It can help develop a character in a way when you can match the character with the weapon.

Cloud chose a sword because he likes to be in people's faces when he fights. Zidane chose daggers and glaives because he's quick and agile like a thief should be. Even in XII where you could choose which weapon the character was going to use, they all started out with a certain type.

Actually, After seeing so many sword users, I prefers spears now, And... Maybe why not make the main character A MAGIC USER for gawd damnits sake. And yes... Swords are still epic... But something new would be awesome.

I'd give my vote to a polearm user. It's more of a quirk than something particularly true, but I tend to consider spears as polearms, but not all polearms as spears.

Example: throwing spears, tridents (despite their shape), yari and to an extent partisans would fit my definition of a proper spear, which as I mentioned is a kind of polearm. However, I wouldn't define most polearms as spears; while you can make a case for the halberd, the guisarme and the glaive, everything breaks down once you reach the Lochaber axe, the bec de corbin and the humble quarterstaff. The Lochaber axe is a polearm whose effective attacking style resembles more using a large axe, the bec de corbin is a blatant hammer (I think Lucerne hammers also fall under this category), and the quarterstaff is pretty evidently not a spear by all means, but it is a pole nonetheless. Perhaps the most useful of all poles, actually.

However, I'd like to see more respect for the best melee weapon the medieval age has to offer. Spears, as you may or may not know, were the first line of melee combat after arrows were thrown. Fighting with a polearm (spear or otherwise) is an art in itself, given that you can strike from a distance, use the other pieces of the weapon creatively (tripping people down by catching their feet on hooks, piercing their armor with the pikes, cutting with wider blades or axe-like blades, and even using the pole itself as a bludgeon!), and works as a pretty defensive measure. Of course, once battle had bypassed spear range, the axe and the hammer (ironically, not the sword!) were best used by infantry, but by then it was merely using those weapons once or twice, and then fall into much smaller weapons once the battlefield became a mess. Meanwhile, someone from the distance could still take any polearm and strike from a range.

It tells why polearms are so diverse, but also why polearms from those dates are scarce. Swords may have more fame, but the humble spear and the two-handed axe or hammer were the weapons of preference in the age. So, to respect that, I'd propose a main character that elegantly uses polearms. You can get improbable weapon users, but the polearm demands some of it's old glory; after all, when guns grew in demand on the battlefield, the humble pike still had relevance. In fact, were it not because of the pike retaining its relevance, bayonets wouldn't have existed at all quite probably.

I understand why Larick wants the main character to have a spear; his avatar is Lloyd from The Legend of Dragoon who killed Lavitz, whom wielded a spear, with the Dragon Buster. Larick wants an easy kill.

It's considered to be similiar to a naginata as your description does provide a description similiar to a Naginata. Naginata's have a curved blade like some swords and the shaft could be used offensively and definsively. Just thought to drop that info.



As for what weapon I think that needs some love not only from a main character but any character in the party is the scythe, first, and shotel, second. The scythe has only been used in FFXI and perhaps tactics games but not for a offline main entry. Scythes are one of my favourite weapons in part due to Deathscythe/Deathscythe Hell (Gundam Wing), being the weapon of the mythological Cronus and of the four horseman of Apocalypse, specifically Grim Reaper (Death), and that it is such a unique looking weapon. The shotel has been in FFXI but to have a character with the shotel's of Sandrock/Sandrock Custom (Gundam Wing)...



Or something very similiar I would like to see.

I think it would depend on the environment and level of technology. And the types of enemies as well, naturally.

Maybe I'll think this one over a bit. Final Fantasy main characters have used mainly swords, at least one used a combination of a gun and a sword, and at least one used every weapon under the sun.

I quite liked the weapons, though. xD It's a sword, but it doesn't really resemble your average sword.

I like the idea of a clawed gauntlet paired with an open, off-handed gauntlet and either a handgun or small melee weapon combo such as a hand-scythe or an axe. (Hell even a plough would be cool!)

If that's too much then a polearm or stave of somekind (preferably a Harpoon.)
Also the wonderful yet often overlooked Nagumaki (A type of Katana whos hilt is almost the same length of the blade.) A comprimise between Naginata and sword!
